Re: Methotrexate Injection, Preservative Free
Due to current supply limitations of a preserved Methotrexate
Injection, patients have been using Bedford's Preservative Free
formulations, which is also in shortage. In an attempt to limit
waste, Bedford refers customers to Trissel's Handbook on Injectable
Drugs, Eleventh Edition, page 851, which indicates that methotrexate
(Lederle, no longer available) was CHEMICALLY stable for up to eight
months when stored in Monoject (Sherwood) or Plastipak (Becton
Dickinson) plastic syringes at 25?C, protected from light.
It can be suggested to take a new vial and as many syringes as you can
expect to dose from that vial and withdraw the entire contents of the
vial at one time into said syringes. For example, if the dose is 0.5
mL, four syringes can be filled from a 2 mL (50 mg) vial.
Please note, Bedford Laboratories only supports the chemical stability
of the solutions; sterility of the filled syringes is dependent upon
each individual's aseptic technique. One must weigh the benefits of
the drug product versus the potential breach of sterility.
