well, i've been using prednisone for about 2.5 months now. Initially
on a high dose for a burst and then down to 30mg a day for a couple
weeks and now staying at 20mg. seems to be the only thing that will
keep the inflammation in my sinuses down to a level where i can
breathe thru my nostrils. the steriodal sprays like Rhinocourt, etc.
just didn't have enough punch to them, unfortunately.
initially, the worst side effect - and it continues to some extent -
was restlesness/insomnia. which i sure hope is transient - it will end
if i stop taking prednisone. also, had a ravishing appetite. god, i
wanted to eat 24/7. i put on about 15 pounds, but the appetite
stimulation has ended and i'm eating normal now. but, as of the last
few days i'm seeing other side effects and praying to god that they
are reversable. first, i felt this 'lump' on my neck - right on my
spine between my shoulder blades. not really a lump that sticks up,
but just like there was some thick tissue or growth under the skin.
well, i just found a site that states one side effect could be 'Fat
pad at back of neck/across tops of shoulder blades' - so, i guess
that's what i've got. more disturbing though, is the evidence of what
i've seen referred to as 'moon face'. it's subtle, but my face does
look sort of goofy - puffy, more round than before. God, I hope this
goes away.
anyone experience 'moon face' or any other ill effects from using
prednisone?
Jo Firey - 20 Dec 2004 23:30 GMT
Moon face, acne, hump, weight gain, vile disposition, etc. Change in body
shape. (Be kind to anyone who has the poor taste to ask when you are due)
They all went away after I got back off prednisone. With the exception of
the weight gain.
And for those who are unnerved by this, you will seldom take enough
predispose to cause all these changes. I was trying to sooth my lungs after
a nasty bout of viral pneumonia complicated by severe Asthma.

Yep, have experienced just about every side effect there is to the
prednisone. The longer you are on it and the higher the dose, the more
likely you are to have side effects. 20 mg a day is still considered a
high dose. Does your doctor have plans on weaning you down a bit
farther? Many of the side effects will disappear once you go off the
prednisone, but some things don't go away, such as some of the fat
deposits, etc.
Hope you can find a happy medium in there somewhere for treating your
illnesses and yet avoiding most of the nasty side effects that can come
with long term steroid use.

My mother had a moon face from prednisone, and several folks on here have
also mentioned having one.

Seems to me that 2.5 months is a little early to see the hump and moon face
side effects. It usually occurs after taking pred for quite awhile longer than
that.
I have a lovely moon face (the benefit being that the skin on my face is too
stretched to wrinkle!) and a big ol hump on my neck. I've been on pred for
gosh....6 or 7 years? Maybe more? I dunno anymore!!

Tina, what is your dosage? It looks like I will be on 5mg for several more
years for PMR, and am wondering about the long term effects.

Yes. I now have hte moon face and the lump at teh back of the neck.
I can feel it when I am looking up at my computer monitor. I am
concerned about it. I will be off this pred bust in two days, and then
we shall see what happens. This is fat, but it feels boney beneath. I
am sure it is only the pred, but I do not like it one bit.

Rose, I have that same kind of "hump" behind my neck, and it feels just like
you describe. I know it's not a dowager's hump from Osteoporosis, and
looking back, it became more pronounced after I was on Prednisone. Nanny

I had mine checked out while they were doing my spinal MRI...its an
overgrowth of fat. It is what is called "Dark fat".....we generally
dont gain weight in those areas, but when we do its very hard to lose.
"Light fat" melts away...the belly, inside thighs and our puffy faces
while on pred. Learned this on Discovery Channel!
Over the numerous years I have been on pred, the hump is becoming more
pronounced with each prescription. My puffy face always goes away,
but the hump only slightly reduces and less so with each trial.

I have a nice little buffalo hump (fat pad growth between neck and
shoulder blades across the spine) going on from repeated pred use. It
has never quite gone away and get larger with each use. Fortunately I
have longer hair and it covers it up.
Far as my face goes...it balloons up nicely! It gets so puffy that my
eye glasses get tight. My face swelling does go away when I finish my
pred.
I'm sure we are all different, so talk to your RD about side effects
you may be having.

The sprays gave me fungal throat infections, and I think that was before
I was placed on generalised immunosuppression. I'm no fan of those sprays.

It sometimes helps, if this works for you, to take your dose after
waking. Hopefully by the time you're ready to sleep the concentrations
have fallen sufficiently.

Sucks, huh? Water retention only makes the weight gain worse, too :-(

It goes away when you stop taking the pred. I got it each time I was put
on high dose pred, and even gained weight on low dose.

Most of us when taking a high enough dose.

I'm going to die rather sooner than I'd like. I tried to protect my

thanks for all the replies everyone.
at least i know i'm not alone.
the 'lump' of fatty deposit on my neck really had me freaking out,
because i'm suffering from disk problems in my neck and thought lump
was some kind of growth/tumor or something hideous like that and was
related to problems with my spine.
