Sonatabv - 16 Dec 2004 20:16 GMT We are taking bids for air conditioners. We are looking at Carrier, Kenmore, and Trane. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations about these.
TIA- Tymon Bloomer (Vickie Bloomer's son)
Janet R - 16 Dec 2004 21:23 GMT I have 4 Tranes....still haven't had any problems out of them at all....been almost 10 years. I assume that soon something will go out. My folks switched to a Trane and they love it too.

I do not even want to think about needing to work on one for more than 10 years but some of them need a little freon every year or two and that would be normal for a 10 year old machine. Harv
Janet R - 16 Dec 2004 23:43 GMT We have 4 for our house. We do need to add freon to at least one of them probably every other year and have had a thermostat inside go out, but nothing with the outside units at all has gone wrong. They cool different parts of the house on different thermostats....so we don't have to cool/heat the whole house when only 2 of us are home.

Just how big is this house? mike's ex had only two systems for her 2400 sq ft house.

Janet R - 17 Dec 2004 05:06 GMT Its big (7000ish sq.ft)....and the electric bill is shocking. I am constantly yelling at the kids to "TURN OFF THE LIGHTS!!! AND SHUT THE DOOR!"
I am all about wearing sweaters and using little space heaters...I'm a tightwad.

The very best thing you can do for your ele. and outside noise is storm windows and shutting down part of your house completely. I have to laugh at myself in thinking,,,, one house,,, one AC. You could update an older set of units and spend the 4 units. Oooh lets not talk about taxes but they love you down at the court house. So it goes. Harv
Janet R - 17 Dec 2004 17:08 GMT Love me? They give me a tickertape parade when I arrive with my check! LOL
We fight those taxes every year to no avail....even hired pros.....
I can make a penny squeak, so I don't let those taxes slip past me without giving it an honest effort.

AND > SHUT THE DOOR!" LOL the house we're in now has no door on the basement stairs so all the cold air comes up from downstairs. We've got the churches, who own the house, putting on a door this weekend. It makes no sense at all to be paying more than we have to to heat the house due to that chilly basement air! As it is, we keep the house at 68, though we know area natives our age who heat up to 72. Too warm for us when it's so cold outside! hehe, Mike prefers the shower in the basement though and it'll really be chilly for him when he goes down there! He says it'll keep him from lingering - I say it'll keep him under the hot water as long as possible!
> I am all about wearing sweaters and using little space heaters...I'm a > tightwad. I hear ya! We both have German and Scottish ancestry, i.e. "cheap"! LOL We'll spend some money on stuff we really want or need, but we can really pinch a penny! My stepdaughter was stunned to learn (as a teenager) that we wash out our Ziplock bags to re-use them. Told us they don't cost that much. We told her it all adds up and it's about the environment, too......

Janet R - 17 Dec 2004 17:38 GMT Oh...You are my kinda folk!!!
We heat to 68 only. I have little space heaters everywhere I sit. There is NO way we could ever warm up this house totally. In the summer (without kids) we completely shut down the upstairs. Our bedroom is downstairs and has it own ac/heat....and I'm never in there during the day...so its turned low then too.
We do the zip-loc bag thing too....why waste them? And our kids complain about the Sam Club toilet paper....what's up with that? Its paper for wiping your booty! When I was a kid and we ran out it was Sears catalog! I grew up with little to no A/C and no heat at night at all....tons of blankets. Kids are spoiled these days.
We save all restaurant coupons...that determines where we eat out, which we only do about twice a month. We drive older vehicles (that are paid for).....we want to have a nice retirement. Delayed gratification!
I'm holding out for the RV we are going to get...and drive around to national parks and visiting our kiddos. Oh yeah...and go to Gimpfest!!!

Its > paper for wiping your booty! When I was a kid and we ran out it was > Sears catalog! hehe, I admit to being choosy about my toilet paper, but that comes from years of psoriasis in the area - meaning really tender skin. I grew up without a/c also - in inland Florida! All of us do enjoy it now, but we keep it set fairly warm. And Mike and I both sleep better in a cool room under comfy covers - except when he keeps trying to steal the covers from me, the old devil! LOL
> We save all restaurant coupons...that determines where we eat out, > which we only do about twice a month. We drive older vehicles (that > are paid for).....we want to have a nice retirement. Delayed > gratification! oh yeah, though we make allowances for an occasional trip to a favorite restaurant....... though they have to be inexpensive to be a favorite. Now our restaurant options are really limited and we mostly eat at home. I'm cooking as I never have before! Drive an 89 Corolla (hey, they are tough cars - it just keeps going! 220k so far and still on the original clutch) and a new-to-us 99 Caravan, 120K but only 60K on its new, used tranny.
Still, do have some fun now! It'd be a shame to save it all for retirement and then not be able to enjoy it for some reason. It happened, somewhat, for my dad as his RA advanced. They didn't get to do the outdoors activities they'd planned for retirement. It's part of why Mike and I went ahead and cashed in an investment to go to Italy in 97 - we could both do it then and we had no idea what the future held.

Janet R - 17 Dec 2004 19:25 GMT NO kidding...and my son loves his 45 minutes showers TWICE a day! I showed him the water and gas bill....he gets one 10 min and one 20 mins showers....he better scrub fast!
I'm going to my kids house when they are adults....and leaving the front door open...all the lights on... the fridge open while I pour my drink...take long long showers....use a new towel EVERY time...leave just enough tea in the pitcher for the next person to get a tsp. of tea...and play my music ear-shatteringly loud!
Its going to fun....wanna come????

I'm *also* going to leave a different piece of dirty laundry in every room of the house, ignore the fact that I just dripped jelly on the kitchen floor and waste the water for an extra large load of clothes just to wash my favorite socks.
Kimmy
Janet R - 17 Dec 2004 20:50 GMT ARRRRR...the jelly on the counter! I just about lose it when I put my hand down and it sticks to the counter top! OR....finding their load of clothes in the washer...that's been there a few days and has a nice little aroma going on!
Ahhhh....kids! Gotta love 'em.

They had us on 4 minute showers a few times in different places I've lived. The worst was the drought in Florida that also led to the firestorms in 98. They were even checking your water bill and going after folks with excessive use.
Or enlist him in the navy..... LOL nothing like showering on board to teach you how to do it fast, from what I'm told. Then there's the showers at some campgrounds that give you a minute or two for a quarter...........
I remember the time my stepdaughter was going to youth group and evening church. She wanted to take a shower at 1 pm (no, she hadn't been doing ANYthing, but less getting dirty or sweaty!), then sit around the house and take *another* shower about 3:30 so her hair would be *freshly* washed before youth group. Needless to say, she was limited to one shower!

Oooh I don't know about the brand. Some much depends on how it is installed and by whom but I would go with the one that had the best ratings on how well it works or uses electricity. Winter time is the time to get the best prices on equipment and installation. Harv
Ps You could be pricing just the outside unit or you could be pricing the whole shabang and in that case you are going to have to see if it is ele. or gas. Gas used to be the most eco. but now days I do not know.
Sonatabv - 16 Dec 2004 23:31 GMT Dear Harv,
I'm pricing both the outside A/C unit and the coil. My furnace is in good shape. Consumer Reports no longer reports on A/C but does say to focus on Price, Efficiency, and Noise. These are all close on Noise and Efficiency. (and not that far apart on price.)
TIA,
Vickie B.

DiWitt - 17 Dec 2004 12:03 GMT I have Carrier in this house and also in my previous house. The old house's ac is still running strong afer 15 years. The builder my husband works for uses Carrier exclusively finding it warrenty free on his part. I don't know of anyone we've sold to with ac problems.
