Firefox seems to be very unstable on my machine.  I installed it with
everything turned off A/V, zone Alarm installed it and rebooted my
computer, but still it crashes.  Something about my set up it does not
like and this is the second time I have tried it.  Looks like I will
have to give up on it again.  Oh well. -- MZ

mary, im running it on an apple notebook and its nice and fast. I still
run netscape 7 for group access. No problems. in fact, just the
opposite. it handles some sites without the little hang-ups netscape
runs into because of MS specs. check their site to see if anyone else is
experiencing similar problems.

Now lets see, M$ want you to stick with IE.
M$ make the OS you're using.
Lots of people are enjoying their FireFox browser,
especially the folks NOT using an M$ OS.

The FireFox people caution that they cannot guarantee that
an M$ OS will make a stable platform for their independant
browser as M$ won't tell anyone about all the screwups and
work-arounds they left in there to trip up other people's
software. (Remember Lotus Office? etc. etc.)

Maybe its time to think about upgrading your OS too?

Shouldn't cost much... :)

Have you checked out your system with the Belarc Advisor?
http://www.belarc.com/

It is a small program to download that tells you everything about your computer
& if there any hardware or software conflicts.

I run XP sp1 on a Sony VAIO PC with a dual 3.2 ghz processor & haven't had any
problem with FireFox. I'm using version 1-1.0 now.

I second that recommendation; Belarc Advisor gives me three or four
pages of data on my system.  For even more detail, there is a free
version of SANDRA [http://www.sisoftware.net/sandra/] which returns
several more pages with additional detail, but you can go through the
system one piece at a time so you don't have to read about parts you
know are all right.

ISTR that dear Larry mentioned both of these to us several years ago.

I did run Belarc and everything seems to check out I looked for
spyware, faulty hotfixes but everything seems to come up clean.
Everything seemed to install correctly. I have SP2 on windows xp and
it loaded just fine.  I wrote to the forums on firefox and they
suggested an old video driver, old version of adobe reader.  here is
what shows up for my motherboard:

Board: ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7V133-C REV 1.xx
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software, Inc. ASUS A7V133-C ACPI BIOS Revision 1007
10/03/2001

1.47 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP
128 kilobyte primary memory cache
256 kilobyte secondary memory cache

I don't think there are any new drivers out for the motherboard.  I
don't know much about these drivers usually the microsoft site will
tell you if a driver needs to be updated.

Switching to another operating is not an option I need compatibility
with my office software.

Firefox crashes about every 3 to 4 minutes.  I think I will have to
uninstall it. -- MZ

I doubt the problem would be with the motherboard or it's drivers.
The problem could be with the video card drivers though.

Is Firefox actually crashing or is windows saying the program has done something
illegal & needs to be shut down.
What does it say when it crashes?

If you must run IE just make sure you have the security level set to at least
medium.

It  closes down and the firefox feedback report comes up and reports
the bug to Mozilla. Sometimes I get the report this issue to Microsoft
and it send the report to Microsoft.  It happens about every 3 or 4
minutes.  Where would I look for the video card drivers?  Firefox also
said it might be adobe reader 6.0 apparently reader 6.02 is better so
I will try that today.

To bad those reports aren't in a language a real person can understand.

In the Belarc report. There should be information for "Display" that will tell
what the Display adapter is.

Belarc should have shown if there was a conflict with adobe. On my old computer
it even told me there were conflicts with some of windows updates.

I don't see any conflicts listed.  The program notes  if some of the
hot fixes are failing but they are all checked green on my web report.
How did your conflicts show up?  As a red check?

this is what it shows for display:

NVIDIA GeForce2 MX [Display adapter]
Default Monitor

I assume it is using the default driver in xp.  firefox forum
suggested I reduce the acceleration on my video, I am not sure what
that is. -- MZ

Yes, a red X with the word Failed & a 'click here' link that
took me to their web site where they had tips for how to fix
the problem.

You can check for SP2 drivers at:
http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce2mx.html

Don't assume anything with windows. You should have been told
when you installed SP2 if any drivers were obsolete but lots
of people aren't being told. You could ask at
news.microsoft.com microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support

>  firefox forum

I doubt that is the problem. My computer has a RADEON 9200
[Display adapter] & I don't have any problems with Firefox.

I have a similar but different AWARD BIOS, and the company doesn't seem
to have released many updates.  Mine is maybe one year newer than
Mary's.

>I doubt the problem would be with the motherboard or it's drivers.
>The problem could be with the video card drivers though.

I think I read somewhere some time ago that video card drivers are one
of the main causes of stability problems, and I know from experience
that XP is very picky about its drivers.

Read the web site. The primary development is for use on a windows platform but,
it is open source so it will operate on the less used OS's.

I've been using Quattro since 1988. It a Borland IBM dos spread sheet database
program & it even runs on XP in a dos shell. <G>

I was kinda joking here Alex. :)

Akchooli... Open Office is a kind of ex-linked development
from the StarOffice project that went all copyright and
commercial and lost just about all it's fan-base as a
result. This kind of UNIX/Linux based project has been
running for a while, and is ported over to the Windows
platform more as an afterthought/separate project.

I would however caution the newbie that a number of
extremely good and well developed reliable applications have
been re-ported to several OSs, including Windows, but, as
I've mentioned in another thread, the Windows plaform is so
riddled with bugs and patches, its a nightmare to port to,
especially when M$ won't "play the game". RIP Lotus Office.
:(

I don't like it because the links don't work.  If you are going to use
Firefox, you might as well use Netscape.

Have you sought help in the 'netscape' groups.
( secnews.netscape.com ) The group 'netscape.mozilla.firebird' covers
Firefox.
