Adelle, may I ask a question?  I've always loved the holiday lights.  And
when  I was a child, many of the houses were decorated in blue lights.  They
are such a pretty contrast to all white or multi-colored lights.  I still
see them here in California but not so often.

I have heard that the all blue light decorations are sometimes Chanukah
Festival of lights decorations rather than Christmas decorations.  Although
I'm quite sure many of them are just folks who love the blue light as much
as I do.  But are they sometimes Chanukah lights?

It's a possibility that the families were Jewish, but unlikely. Solid blue
lights aren't as popular here as white or multicolor, but you do see them.

As a general rule, most Jews do not decorate their homes with electric
lights because it is a Christmas custom and Christmas isn't our holiday. And
90+% of Jews do see Christmas as a religious holiday and not a secular one
or a 'season.'

A few less observant or highly assimilated people do put up electric
lights, but that is more because they personally feel left out, not really
to celebrate Chanukah. Chanukah just becomes the excuse. If it were really
for Chanukah, they would only have been up for the eight or nine days of our
holiday, and not most of December.

Adelle, can you tell us about chocolate gelt?

Is it something special reserved for Chanukah,
or is it used for gifts throughout the year?

This article from a Canadian Jewish newspaper gives a nice summary.

http://www.cjnews.com/pastissues/02/nov21-02/features/jhighway.htm

It is silent about how the custom turned from real coins to chocolate. I
suspect that it was simply a marketing idea. And while stores that cater to
Jewish kids keeps a small supply of kosher chocolate coins in stock all
year, its popularity soars in anticipation of Chanukah.

Our family has the tradition of giving real gelt (about a dollar in coins)
each night with a present on the last night (this year it will be Red Sox
stuff). We also keep chocolate gelt around the house.

Thank you for the reference.

I left Boston/North Quincy too soon - about 58 years too soon.  <g>
Always rooted for the Red Sox because Ted Williams was from
here and attended my high school.

Does anyone from ASA not keep chocolate in the house?
