You may remember that my Mom was involved in an apartment fire about 6
weeks or so ago. She has now been resettled and is living in an
accessible apartment. Aside from a few unexpected glitches, the move
has gone well. There are still a few minor issues that need to be
solved- many of her dishes and china, as well as collectables were
damaged, a family ring lost- but for the most part it has gone
relatively well.
There have been many changes in her life. She walked every where most
recently with a walker, but has now purchased a scooter and is now
learning to use it independently. She has never had a dishwasher, but
now has one. For someone approaching 80 these have been significant
changes.
Because her mobility is limited, she has been bringing her scooter
into the apartment. On Sunday a maintenance inspector stopped by and
told her that she was not allowed to do this, but that the scooter
needed to be left outside. My sister was ready to take whatever steps
were necessary to have that rule changed, as it did not seem fair.
Fortunately an OT came by yesterday and he seemed to think that it was
necessary for her to bring the scooter inside, and that he would
approach the management with that request.
I have not heard how/if this matter has been resolved, but it was
certainly fortuitous timing for hime to come just then to advocate on
her behalf.
They only have the one unit that is wheelchair accessible, and maybe
there is a learning curve for them as well on what is/is not
permitted.
Has anyone encountered a similar rule?

Is that an electric scooter? No different than a TV,
garbage disposal or dishwasher.
But absolutely NO gasoline inside a residental unit
or public gathering place such as a museum.

Nope, not gas. It is electric.
OK, good to hear that it should be allowed.

I think they are concerned in case the floor or walls get damaged. But
if she is careful and accepts responsibility should any such damage
occur then it should not be a problem.

no, i haven't and it's a dumb rule as long as the scooter is electric. i'm
sure the scooter doesn't qualify for the indy 500 (scooters generally go
about 2 miles an hour), so it isn't likely its going to run away with her.
how tippy is it, rose? that might be something you and your sister might
want to check out or have checked out by your mom's ot, though. cool that
he went to bat for her and her scooter.<smile>
sounds like things have been coming together for her. it is sad that your
mom lost some things she held dear, though. what kinds of things did she
collect, rose? and what kind of china did she prefer? i might have stuff
around here that i never use that she can.

She had some porcelaine roses and things like that. The value was more
in that they had been given by family members than in the actual
objects themselves.
Thanks for offering though. That is very sweet.

Contact the Aging and Independent Services, under the Federal law -- Older

qualifies. A summons from a Federal agency will put the fear of God in the

Bummer on the little scooter problem that will be solved for sure but send my
admiration to your mom. I just can't imagine being flexible enough at her age
to mae the changes she has had to make gracefully. Tell her she is my role

Seems to me your mom has adjusted unusually well at her age. It would sure
be hard for me if I had gone through a fire and lost some things imnportant
to me. And leraning to use the scooter and dishwasher is just terrific.

She has done remarkably well given the problems she has been
experiencing both physically and mentally. Perhaps it was just
depression that she was dealing with earlier, that led to such
confusion.
Thanks Gwen.

I sure hope that things work out for your mother and that the scooter thing
is settled quickly. I am glad she has someone going to bat for her.
Also Rose thank you for the letter in your card to keep us updated. That was
great. I usually do that too but just couldn't do it the last few years. So
it was good to see yours. I like to hear how others are doing during the
year.
I hope the christmas concert turns out well.
You take care and keep us updated to how it goes with your mother and the
scooter.

Thanks. I don;t know anything new, but am assuming all is fine.
Thanks too about the letter. I used to handwrite a note for everyone,
but have cut down to a photocopied letter. Of course it is all old
news here, since I keep this group pretty well informed. LOL

Rose, I liked the letter also. Some folks don't like Christmas letters but
I love them. Used to write them myself, but now don't have too much to
write about!

Wow, Rose, you mom has been through so much and handled things with such
grace. Not sure I could do that well at 43 years of age.
I would think the place where your mom is staying now doesn't really
have a leg to stand on with the scooter issue especially if it is a
handicapped apartment, not to mention that if it was an electric
wheelchair they can't deny that! Praying that issues gets worked out
very quickly.
I have to say that living through a fire is probably my most feared
thing of all time. There is just something about a house fire that
terrifies me and always has.

I, too, love the letter(s) - makes me feel like you've come into my home
& shared a bit of yourself with me. I get warm fuzzies from those
letters - even from those with nothing much to write about! ;)
So, folks, keep those cards and letters coming! LOL Maybe I should
write one, now that I've said all that...
luv&stuff,
