DCHAM - 07 Dec 2004 04:14 GMT my stepdaughter alerted me to this cool site, www.freecycle.org the purpose of which is to recycle things you no longer need to people who can use them instead of filling up the landfill with them. i posted my 7 foot xmas tree i no longer want to put up (and take down) and a barbecue grill. i got several requests for each within a couple of hours. i put them in my driveway, the people who want them came and took them away. very cool.

Newsgroup Spambuster - 07 Dec 2004 15:06 GMT Diane,
Isn't freecycle.org great!!! I love it and it is so easy and convenient to use/do. I also like the thought of not just throwing things away and filling up the landfills as well as the thought that it is an inexpensive way to get rid of stuff without paying someone to haul it off. It is well worth the time and effort! Since they have them located all over the country, it is also very convenient for most!

You can also deduct it from your taxes.

Most second-hand stores are NOT operated by the organization whose name is being used. DAV, AMVETS, and others simply get paid to have the name used by the stores.
DCHAM - 08 Dec 2004 00:43 GMT >> Wouldn't it be better to help a charity like Disabled Veterans by >> calling them to pick it up? it sounds good in theory, and i do pull together a bunch of stuff a couple of times a year for AmVets. but they won't pick up anymore here, and salvations army's moved their truck to the other side of the county, and there's no way i can lug my xmas tree and barbecue to them. so far, it seems like most of the people taking my items are young twenties, just starting out. makes me feel good to help them.

ummm . . . i probably shouldn't reveal this, but i've gotten rid of a swing set, a portable color tv, a computer system, a sliding glass door, a truck bed liner, a truck canope, and a huge hay wagon (though that had 2 flat tires), all in useable condition, by simply having them put at the road edge with a "free" sign on them. they didn't sit there long. my son taught me that trick when he was 6, cuz he got rid of a goat we had that he hated/hated/hated, by waving a cardboard and color crayoned "FREE GOAT!!!" sign at passing motorists.LOL
i loathe messing with having garage sales and our local charities wouldn't come get them when i called them. if somebody picked them up and used them or sold them, god blessed them, either way. personally, i don't believe in "tax write offs" for gifts to charities. (butch did, so i went along with it.) for me, i'm not "gifting" if i get something like tax breaks back.

They told us repeatedly that they did pickups in town on Tuesday and if we left the stuff out front they'd collect it. Well, it worked once, for an old TV, but never again. Twice we gave them four weeks that they were supposed to pick up the stuff and didn't - mind you with Mike having to drag it out to the curb, then back into the garage each Tuesday. After 4 tries, it went to Goodwill. After this happened twice, we quit trying.

Caroline Marold - 08 Dec 2004 20:42 GMT Am Vets sorts -- if they don't want, they don't take. But mind you, they don't leave a note saying they have been there. You just needed to be looking down on them from an upstairs window. Duckie

Gave the info again - with directions this time (the house is kinda hard to find), same result and so on. Goodwill was happy to have the stuff though.

Caroline Marold - 08 Dec 2004 20:36 GMT Yeah and the vets and a couple of other charities who do pick up now sort through stuff and take only what they want. You are left with a truly messy pile of crap when they leave. They also don't get called anymore. My policy is, if you won't take it all -- you get nothing. My brother works for Goodwill and I should take stuff to them as a support for his job [he hangs clothes out of your bags onto hangers for the stores]. But Goodwill doesn't pick up and lugging is just too hard to do. The Epilepsy Foundation is now getting most of my business as they take all I put out and they pick up. They call me every few months to tell me they will be in my area. If I have stuff, I tell them to stop. So I don't have to call, I don't have to lug, and I don't have to dispose of leftovers. Win win for me. Duckie

I had a phone conversation with a 90-year-old woman who is pretty much my dearest friend. You often think that you will never find someone who understands you and who you understand.
Anyway, Sara wants to clear her home of books she will never read again. And maybe a few other things. But most of the charities in NYC no longer pick up donations. You have to schlepp them down to their pick up stations yourself.
But Sara cannot do that. She could barely get them down to the lobby of her building and would need help getting them into whatever charity's truck came to pick them up.
So, in essence, it seems that charitable giving does not include books.
What a loss.
Caroline Marold - 08 Dec 2004 20:38 GMT Try the local library. Ours has a book sale and they welcome donations. Some they keep for the library as well. Got rid of a trunk load [husband did the loading and they did the unloading] after sorting two book cases. Maybe if she gift wrapped a few and left them on a park bench.... Duckie

Cool! They have a local group here so I signed up. The local goodwill didn;t want some of my electric fixtures I have some good overhead lighting. I have been updating my home a bit lately so I have a few things. -- MZ

DCHAM - 08 Dec 2004 14:21 GMT >Coming back to SoCal? <g> i wish. :-) no chief, i'm an easterner. i LOVED san diego big time, but i missed tall trees and greenery. john and i are planning to move in together. it could be his house, my house, a new (to us) house in this area, a house in maryland or north carolina. very complicated decision making. having moved into my ex's house, i am extremely reluctant to do that again. in n.c., if we pool our equity, we could buy a house outright easily. in this inflated northern va area, we would still have a honkin' big mortgage. not sure how we'll figure this out. . .
