Tree or not?  If yes, can you describe the sort of tree you have?

Favorite piece of Holiday music?

Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

Favorite Holiday Movie

You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this year:  what
will it be?

what is your favorite scent of the season?

Favorite story of the season?

If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which one would
you keep?

there will be more surveys coming as I live vicariously through you all <g>
Also remember, I am quite tricky.  I am probably huntung for information as
well as forging bonds, sharing memories, etc.

>Tree or not? If yes, can you describe the sort of tree you have?

not this year-always a live one, the biggest live one we could find.

>Favorite piece of Holiday music?

I adore the entire Nutcracker Suite and  Concerto Grossi by Corelli

>Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

I am a glutton for Christmas CD's must have 200 different ones.  this year it
is very old stuff-now I am listening to songs that won the war-I'll be home for
Christmas-right this minute it is Johnny Mercer winter wonderland.  In the car
it is Christine Lavine's run away Christmas tree.  The kids are obsessed with
it.

>Favorite Holiday Movie-Either White Christmas or Miracle on 34th street, the
old version.

>You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this year: what
>will it be?  Hard one as I haven't had sugar in almost three months.  I'll
choose and give it to the kids-either fudge or little spritz cookies

>what is your favorite scent of the season?

Well, not really meaning to be a cliche, I do love chestnuts roasting on that
open fire, love the smell of the tree, and spiced whatever-either potpourri or
spiced cider or spiced anything.

>Favorite story of the season? The Christmas Menorahs;  Trees of the Dancing
Goats,

>If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which one

i don't have an artificial and probably will not mess with a living one this
year.  orrrrr, maybe i'll get a fragrant 4 ft. norwegian royal spruce, with
the long, flat needles.  or maybe not.LOL

> Favorite piece of Holiday music?

almost anything lilting and sweet or fun and energetic.  i like too many
scores to pick just one.

> Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

same story here.

> Favorite Holiday Movie

'it's a wonderful life' and 'miracle on 34th street (with natalie wood as
the child)'  okay, so i'm hokey this time of the year.LOL

> You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this year:

baked?---those lovely and tender little snowball cookies that melt in my
mouth, with nuts inside.  i forget what they are called, they look like
snowballs to me because of the confectioner's sugar around them and they are
real buttery.   i can never make them right, always overbake them and
haven't made them in years.  not baked-- homemade creamy fudge with walnuts.

> what is your favorite scent of the season?

baking smells and the fragrant tree.

> Favorite story of the season?

"the littlest angel"

> If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which one

gift giving---well, it IS a ritual for me<g>.  but, in case it isn't to
anybody else, i also love driving around and being giddy from the gorgeous
christmas lights on homes.  and there is the leaving of the shoebox of hay.
caroling.  burying an egg at solstice.   uhohhh, too many rituals.  i have
too many to pick just one.

puerto ricans (my mom is p.r., but dad isn't), for generations back and some
even today, did not have a santa claus.  what they had were "the 3 kings"
(who visited the original manger scene), instead.

traditionally, it is children who leave hay for the steeds of the 3 kings.
(kinda like leaving cookies for santa.)  after the 3 kings' steeds eat the
hay (by way of mom or dad disposing of it, after the kid is asleep), the 3
kings leave 3 gifts, one from each of the kings, for the child.  i'm still a
kid at heart, so i still put out a bit of hay, to honor my mother's
culture.<smile>

We just call 'em snowballs (it's right there on the grandma's recipe card
"SNOWBALLS") and they're my dad's favorite so we have them every year..I love
them in the morning the day after christmas. Kids are sleeping off the holiday
and I sit down at the puter with a couple snowballs (and maybe a thumbprint)
and a fresh cup of coffee while I flip thru my e-mail.

Not in the last few years... too tired to set it up.  Hopefully this year.

O Holy Night.  I have a tape from about 15 years ago, when my son's

song with the combination of children's and adult voices still brings me to
tears every time.

Cedar.  My favorite scent any time of year as well.

Any real story (and there are several each year) about human kindness and
the spirit of the season making lives better for someone, somewhere.

> If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which one would

A new one... last year I worked in the dispatch area of a local charity that
provides toys to children of needy families.  We sent out thousands of bags
of toys, and by the time I left there I felt like Christmas had come alive
for me.  So many people showed up to deliver toys I nearly cried.  I can't
wait to do it again, and won't give it up until the day that nobody needs
it.

As I have in years past I want to ask each of you to do one thing for me
this Holiday Season.  Now more than any other time of year I miss hearing
music.  And it is unlikely I'll ever get that back, even with an implant.

I'm grateful for every bit of music I've ever heard.  And I'm grateful that
I did truly appreciate it at the time.  I loved the years I sang with a
children's choir, etc.

So at least once this year, in spite of the overload we all get with
constant Christmas music on the radio and in the stores, etc.  Please for me
take the time to stop and just listen to one Christmas song all the way
through and really enjoy it for me.

Do you have a favorite piece of Christmas music? I would love to find it and
listen intently to it and enjoy it with you in mind.

I hear a background of holiday music every day while working and it does
tend to all blend together after awhile. I even start to dread hearing it by
the end of the season.

Having a mission in which I know someone else is missing out will make me
appreciate it a little more. Thanks for making me think.

There will be many songs of Christmas.  Some just enjoyed with others.
Some done as part of the Sunday service.   Then there is the Christmas
cantata  that has been worked on for two months,,,, and I will think,,, this
is for Jo who can no longer hear what takes place but has good memories and

I will be overjoyed to do that for you, Jo.  I've always said that I'd rather
lose my sight than my hearing because I can't imagine going through life
without music.  I'd still hear it in my head, but it wouldn't be the same.  I
truly feel for you in your loss of hearing and listening to music.  I'll
listen to some songs just for you.

You've got it Jo. Used to say I would join the church
choir when I could no longer dance [dance party is on
the same night as choir practice] but I have found that
my voice is leaving me. Guessing it is the arthur
taking one more thing away and it makes me sad but
maybe with some training, I could recover it although I
doubt it as this feels different to me than just unuse.
Used to be able to hit a solid high C and barely make
down to a middle C. Now I am sure they would say I was
an alto and at that a shaky one. Don't want to sing
alto because I just don't. But since you can't hear me,
I will sing O Holy Night here inside my house just for
you. I will be happy and you can be happy and no one
else has to know how really bad it was.

Gwen Love - 05 Dec 2004 23:57 GMT
Duckie, I've had the same experience with my alto voice.  I used to go from
a low G to a high C, but now I can't sing anything.  I still hear the alto
but can't sing it or soprano.  Now with my lungs, I don't have the breath
anyway, but I really miss being able to sing in the choir.

Gwen do you go to hit a note -- and know where it
should be but the voice just puts it where it wants to.
Singing now sounds like a kid banging on the keyboard
-- just random notes.
Don't listen Jo -- don't want you to hear how bad I am now.

Yes ma'am!  I know exactly what the alto note is supposed to sound like, but
it just doesn't come out that way most of the time.  So when I try to sing
it, I sing very, very softly so I'm the only one that hears how I mess up.

I think losing my voice has been one of the most irksome things about
all this. I have no voice at all. I think that is what prompted me to
suggest that JO sing. I hope it  did not seem inappropriate or cheeky.
That was never my intent. it is just that so much joy can be derived
from singing, and maybe if you can not hear it for real, you can still
hear it in your heart.

There is so much beautiful music  this time of the year. I will think
of Jo every time and be thankful that I can still hear it.

Jo,
I will listen to all the music this season with you in my heart.

5 yrs ago, I got up like every morning and I went to work...wasn't sick just
went to work....kept hearing a strange noise in my right ear....
By the end of the day...nothing but a loud shhhhhhhhh...I couldn't even hear
a dial tone....When I finally saw a specialist after messing with my PC for
2 months...He came in and the first thing he said was....
The good news is people live normal lives with hearing out of one ear...The
bad news....You will probably never get it back.....And so I didn't and I
cried about it that day and I worried that one day I would wake up and the
other ear would be the same...Don't know what caused it...said it was
probably a virus....

SO I AM SAYING....JO....HOW SORRY I AM THAT YOU CANNOT HEAR...AND HOW MUCH I
KNOW YOU MUST MISS THE SOUNDS OF THE SEASON AND OF ALL THE SEASONS AND OF
THE CHILDREN AND I  KNOW HOW ISOLATED IT MAKES YOU FEEL....NOT SHOUTING AT
YOU...JUST WITH YOU....WHEN I AM IN A ROOM AND THERE IS TOO MUCH GOING
ON....I HAVE PROBLEMS HEARING AS EVERYTHING RUNS TOGETHER AND I SORT OF JUST
SHUT DOWN AND I GET SO AGGRAVATED AS I CAN'T SORT IT ALL OUT....

NOW I AM SHOUTING...HOW GRATEFUL I AM TO HAVE ONE GOOD EAR AND THANKING THE
LORD FOR THAT...AND SENDING YOU HUGS AND PRAYERS AND KNOW THAT I AM
LISTENING THIS SEASON FOR YOU...

Jo,
If you get a chance go see something (anything) where there are little
children and music this time.  Even if you can't hear anything at all -
anything at all.

When you look at the face of the 2 - 4 year olds you will see, hear and feel
the music.  My son is stage manager for the local professional children and
adult theatre company Kaileidoscope.  They perform Peter Pan this year.
There was a 3 year old behind us and I spent more time watching her than the
play (which was excellent.)  I didn't have to watch to know the magic on
stage - I only had to watch her.  I have many times watched little ones this
time of the year.  They tap their feet, swing their hands and their eyes
glow.  They feel the music - don't just hear it.

If you don't get to a concert with this I will definitely do this for you!
For me there is no overload - my christmas music is varied from classical,
to children, country (which I usually detest) to jazz.  I will share it with

I have an artificial tree, and for the past three or so years have
been doing it in gold and silver.
I have ribbon on it and numerous decorations, some made to resemble
giganic snowflakes, and others large icicles. SOme of the decorations
aI bought today are a little garish; large crystals like a 50s
chandelier, large pearl and gold danglies like a 60s gogo dancer.

>Favorite piece of Holiday music?

Silent night- I love everything about it including the story Johann's
gift to Christmas. That is one that I have to be really happy before I
read it to the class, as I find it quite emotional.
For many years when we were growing up and went to the Evangelical
church in Manitoba, for our church concert I would sing Silent Night
in Ukrainian.
My sister's solo was O Holy Night.

I enjoy listening to Boney M. Felis Navidad. and Mary's Boy Child.

family dinner

Until my father died when I was 8 years old we celebrated a very
traditional Ukrainian Christmas which took place according to the
Julian calendar and was on January 6-7th. According to that tradition,
Christmas eve is very important and the Christmas ever dinner includes
twelve meatless dishes.

Because we stopped doing this many years ago, there is much I do not
remember. The carols though seemed very magical.

There was one preserved fruit my mother made, that was made of dried
apples, prunes, and raisins. It was very rich, but very tasty.

There is also a boiled wheat dish pronounced kootya that was like
ambrosia. The wheat had to cook for several hours, and then ground
poppy seed and honey were added.
You could not eat a lot of either of these desserts. LOl

it's funny, sj.   when my mother first told me about it, when i was little,
she told me to fill a shoebox with "weeds" and put it under my bed for the
horses of the 3 kings.  makes perfect sense now, since we lived in san
francisco, at the time, and hay was not readily available.  but years later,
i found out from my aunt, her sister, according to her, it was supposed to
have been "hay".  so, either hay or weeds, i guess is ok.LOL  in a way, i
like that tradition much better than santa, cuz it fits into/complements the
original christmas story.  but i also grew up with santa/st.

Mary's Boy Child. I just love that song.  It is my
impression that the writer was the very elderly black
man that 'sang in the choir' on a show whose star was
the man who was George Jefferson in the Archie Bunker
show. Did you follow that. rofl  The writer was very
elderly [over 90] but this song is so lively and easy
to sing. Best new Christmas song in a very long time.

this year we finally have room for an indoor tree!  looks like it will be
blue spruce as that is what the local growers grow and we'll go cut our own
in a week or two.  It will have ornaments and multicolored lights.  I know we
have the lights (I've strung them around our living space in the past) but
I'm not sure what we have in the way of ornaments.  May have to buy some.

attending Midnight Mass   I've only missed it once since I was about 6 or 7
and that was because we didn't get to church as much ahead of the service as
we should have and the building was absolutely packed.  Went home and watched
the National Cathedral on TV and went to the local service in the morn.  I
now try to sing in the choir, which guarantees one a seat  :)

I just remembered the name of that book was the
Littlest Angel not the Little Drummer boy. He gives up
his prize possession in a ratty little box among the
regal gifts. It was of course the favorite of all the
gifts because it was all he had and he gave it freely.
My mother would be sobbing by the end of the book.
Don't think I ever heard the end of the book until I
was able to read myself because of her crying. :)

Very mini survey

1)   Tree or not? If yes, can you describe the sort of tree you have?

****** Yes.......usually a small artificial tree, always with
multicolored lights, and a mishmash of ornaments.   We always got a new
ornament every year for christmas when we were growing up so that when
we finally moved out on our own, we had enough ornaments to at least
decorate a small tree of our own.  I still have all of those old
ornaments plus some newer ones that I just LOVE ... such as some Thomas
Kinkade ornaments (absolutely love his stuff!) and of course a few U of
M / Go Blue ornaments.   Like I said....a real mishmash of ornaments!
LOL!!!

2)   Favorite piece of Holiday music?

******Hmmmmm........that would have to be a toss up between feliz
navidad and silent night!    Actually, truth be told, I LOVE christmas
music and can sometime be caught singing christmas tunes in the dead of
summer!    The music is always so joyful and peppy.....makes you just
want to dance!

3)   Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

******Call me sappy, but I like some of the older ones that have people
like Elvis Presley, Anne Murray, Bing, John Denver, etc. on them.

4)   Favorite Holiday Movie

******Christmas story and rudolf the red nosed reindeer!   (yep, I'm a
kid at heart!)

5)   You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this
year: what will it be?

******Only one?   Gee Melinda, that is a hard one.   I guess it would
have to be a toss up for me between homemade coconut macaroons, my moms
special homemade sugar cookies that have nutmeg in them and are oh
soooooo yummy, and plain old homemade peanut butter cookies.

6)   what is your favorite scent of the season?

******wood burning in the fireplace, the fresh scent of pine, spiced
cider, and the lovely scent of a good peppermint candle burning.

7)   Favorite story of the season?

******The birth of Christ!

8)   If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one,
which one would you keep?

******Hmmmm.....I guess it would be christmas eve services.   I love the
midnight service, but over the last few years I have been going to all 3
services we have.   We have a service at 6:00, 9:00, and then at 12:00
midnight.   I usually go to all 3 and then just sit in the sanctuary
between services and meditate, take in all the lovely sights, colors,
and sounds, and etc.   I also like to use the time to fulfill some
secret santa duties with people from my bible study group and other good
friends from church.   It is a good chance to leave a small gift or two
in the public office of our church with notes on them.  Of course, I
find others to write the notes in their handwriting so no one can
recognize my handwriting.   You should see the looks on some of the
elderly people here in my building when I ask them to write out a note
for me.   Too darn funny!!!

Jo, it will be an honor and a true pleasure to honor your request!

Not only will I listen very intently to those christmas songs, but will
more than likely sing some of them at the top of my lungs no matter how
poorly I sing.   Will also more than likely dance a bit to several of
them and always think of you as I do.

I absolutely LOVE christmas music and one of my favorite things to do is
to sit in the room with all the lights turned off and the lights on the
christmas tree plugged in.  I sit in the dark, get lost in the beauty of
the tree with its lights on and christmas music playing in the
background!!!   The best and most soothing and cherished balm to the
soul that I can find.

Merry Christmas Dear Friend and May you feel the Love of all of us

Yes, we have a tree but it's artificial (spelling) with tons of lights and
shiny ribbon.  This is our second year to saying no to ornaments.  They are
just too much to drag out and repackage.

him singing.

I love noble firs and we always get the biggest one we can squeeze under the

Does it have to be baked? Grammy used to make the most delightful Divinity,

good recipes. old school classic southern cooking. She made a turkey
gravy that was amazing and no one knows her secret. So gather together
your favorites while there is time. I wish I had a little cookbook of
grandma's recipes. It would make a nice gift for family members.

Just got a phone call from my mom, who got the recipe and is going to email
it to me. She says Grammy told her that I have to call and get specific
instructions from Grammy on just when to do certain things before I can make
it. lol

I will try and take good notes so that I can pass them along with the
recipe. May be a few days before I can catch Grammy at home...she may be 90
but she's rarely home during the day.

Sounds like a plan. It has been several years since I had great divinity.

I am looking forward to making some.

My great grandfather's turkey gravy recipe lives on through my mom.  He put
milk in it.  Go figure.  It was and is wonderful.  He did a lot of cooking
which was very different at that time.

>Tree or not?  If yes, can you describe the sort of tree you have?
Always, fake...so much easier for us with the furkid. I have a big Charlie
Brown tree...we made colored foam ornaments last year (Joe and I) so Hope
could pick them off the tree and not hurt them...so we have candy canes and
santas and reindeer it's a tacky big tree but I love it. We also have a lil 4
ft tree in our bedroom.

>Favorite piece of Holiday music?
Carol of the Bells...and jingle bells there's a story here. jingle bells has
never been my fav but Hope learned to sing it this year. last night at 9:24pm
she started singing it at the top of her lungs...very cute stuff.

>Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)
I have a few Time Life Christmas Music...all the oldies but goodies
Harry Conick Jr has a Christmas CD out that I like alot, and Trans Siberian
Orchestra..some of my favs...but love the old stuff best.

>Favorite Holiday Movie
I have three...absolute all time fav is White Christmas can't be Christmas
without this movie (I watched it in September this year when Hope found her
Christmas videos). Second would be The Santa Clause, my first date with Joe
ten years ago on Dec 10th. And third, National Lampoons Christmas
Vacation...since this is how our Christmas turns out every year.

>You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this year:  what
>will it be?
Sandtart cookies...only my Nana can make them right...my mom and I try but we
just can't do it.

>what is your favorite scent of the season?
pine and I have an apple cinnamon candle from Target I'm loving,

>Favorite story of the season?
Twas the Night Before Christmas

>If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which one would

Putting up the tree...last year I did give up all our rituals due to alot of
family issues but I did put up the tree and it helped. I'm sure hoping this
Christmas is better than last.

Yes - we have an 7 foot artificial Scotch pine.  I love it!

> Favorite piece of Holiday music?

White Christmas

> Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

A Rosie Christmas by Rosie O'Donnell and Friends (I love "I'm Gonna Eat for
Christmas!")

> Favorite Holiday Movie

White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye

Miniature chocolate cakes with no icing!

Vanilla

The birth of the Christ child.

Decorating as a family to the sounds of Christmas music and then having hot
chocolate.  I missed the kids this year! However, Bob helped me a lot.

That's okay.  I am always mining for information like this.

Happy ChristmaHannuKwanzaakah!  That's a cute commercial and covers
everyone! (Of course, there will SOMEONE who takes offense at the commercial
or my salutation.  There is always at least one who takes things entirely
too personally.)

>Tree or not?  If yes, can you describe the sort of tree you have?

Not since I moved out of my parents' house. They're christian, I am not.

>Favorite piece of Holiday music?

Honestly, I can't stand any of it. After many years working retail it
makes me nearly homicidal when I hear holiday music. Although I like Adam
Sandler's Hannukah song.

>Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

Anything that is not Xmas music!!!

>Favorite Holiday Movie

*giggle* Bad Santa. The unrated version, aka Badder Santa. A Christmas
Story is also funny.

>You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this year:  what
>will it be?

mmmm. Butter Tarts. Hands down.

>what is your favorite scent of the season?

Pumpkin Spice/Gingerbread - they're similar. I think it's the
clove/cinnamon/allspice combo.

>Favorite story of the season?

ohhh. The time at my brother's elementary school Xmas concert when in the
middle of a song a girl named Elizabeth threw up on the kid in front of
her cuz the lights were so hot, and it set off a chain reaction of other
kids throwing up on one another. Much like the "barf-o-rama" scene in the
movie "Stand By Me"   Afterward, the only thing my brother said was, "it
was sooooo grooooooss, mom. She had SPAGHETTI for dinner."

>If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which one would
>you keep?

Clam chowder family dinner Xmas eve at my parents house.  But because I am
an odd combination - raised semi-christian, though non practising, but
jewish by heritage, and something closer to buddhist in my beliefs, it
will be interesting to see what traditions Tish and I develop. She is a
practising jew, and fairly strict.

I've also incorporated your candle ceremony at the New Year, Melinda. I
always do that because it feels good.

We have a fake after-Christmas clearance tree that is in it's own class
- neither fir nor spruce nor pine - but with sufficient lights & glitz &
glitter it is transformed into a glorious testament to the creativity of
children.  And pets...  ;)    Hope to get the decorations unpacked
before Mother's Day

> Favorite piece of Holiday music?

O Holy Night

> Favorite Holiday CD (may be redundant but possibly not)

Old recording, finally on CD, The Little Drummer Boy.  Hope to unpack my
holiday CDs before Mother's Day

> Favorite Holiday Movie

It's a Wonderful Life

> You get to pick only one holiday baked goodie and only one this year:
 what will it be?

My variation of Russian Tea Cakes.  Hope I can unpack the recipe before
Mother's Day

> what is your favorite scent of the season?

Oranges & cloves & cinnamon & - oh, just one?  <G>

> Favorite story of the season?
> If you had to give up all your traditional rituals accept one, which
one would you keep?

Getting the whole family together

> there will be more surveys coming as I live vicariously through you
all <g>
Also remember, I am quite tricky.  I am probably hunting for information as
well as forging bonds, sharing memories, etc.
