Enbrel not working?

Has anyone on the board who has tried Enbrel had just a so-so response?  I have
been using Enbrel for PA for six months.  It seems to have slowed the
progression of my symptoms, but I do not see any difference in joint or soft
tissue swelling. My results are similar to when I took Sulfasalazine, without
the gastric irritation.  I do also have a dx of inflammatory OA, which
complicates the evaluation of my response, especially in my hands.  I'm
disappointed. How are my fellow posters doing on Enbrel?

I'm fully fused from AS and having been injecting Enbrel since June. Since
the progression of AS is so slow it's difficult to tell if anything is
happening. I do believe there is a psychological improvement and maybe some
stiffness relief but it's really hard to tell. I don't expect it to bring
back mobility nor do I expect it to stop the pain but if it slows or stops
the progression of the disease, then I'm happy with it.  I also take
tramadol (ultram) and vicodin for pain control which offer immediate pain
relief that is instantly noticeable.

Hi Cindy,,, I took it for almost 3 years and it was great for my RA.   You
are not alone with your so-so reaction to it.   I have read it several
times.    PA is very hard to control and we have one lady here that takes 4
DMARDs a week and her PA is not fully under control.   It could be that
Remicade or Humira might work better for you or add one to what you take
now.  A steroid shot helps on the short run but you can not live on those.
You have to work with your RD on this.

Hi Cindy!
my wife started using Enbrel about 6 months ago for her RA. It
seemed to work alittle in the beginning but now it seems to be doing
nothing.

I loved humira and when I had to switch to enbrel I found it to be a little
harder on the system but it works great.  I started out with the usual two 25mg
shots a week and a few months into it changed to one 25mg shot a week,
radically chaning my diet at the same time.  That protocol has worked fine for
me also.  I sleep well and have quadrupled my exercise.  I sure noticed a
difference when I was in Florida without enbrel and eating regular food. It was
back to the pred.  Anti TNF drugs work wonders for me, although using them
makes my neti pot my best friend.

Switch to humira if the enbrel isn't working.  Also some people need to take
enbrel three times a week.

I also have OA as well and take glucosamine and ASU to keep my OA under control
and I also take a ton of fish oil.  I take lots of other supplements as well
depending on the strategy of the moment but those three combined with enbrel
keep me going.

I have recently gottten back into my old eating mode and stopped eating any
sugar, most grains (with oatmeal andbrown rice  an exception) and dairy.  I
think that dietary change along with ASu is probably why I can do so well with
such a small amount of enbrel.

One last thing, it took the longest time to get my hands under control, also.
I found out that I was having much repetitive stress problems from keyboarding
too much.  Had to get that changed (different keyboard, braces when typing,
acupuncture, moxa and ice).  Now not much of anything hurts.

Melinda, that is wonderful news from you.  So glad you ran off most of the
pain!

Cindy,
Can you google this?  There has been a good amount of info posted that will
have links my brain doesn't remember right now.  Also Dr. Theo.'s website has
info and links.  I swear by the stuff-

Basically it is a NSAID that is made from the components of avocado and soy.
It is a prescription drug in Germany I think.  I have been trying to get a
wholesale distributor for months and having no luck. It is not like any other
"natural" product I know including Chinese herbs because you take it and pain
stops.  It's like advil or motrin without the gastric problems.

I am glad that the enbrel and the diet is working for you.

I am glad not much of anything hurts. That sounds like good news to me.

Thinking of you.

what does ASU stand for?  I need to get that fixed in my mind because every
time I see the initials here I think "Appalachian State University" (in
Boone, NC).  I keep getting really confused......

When I read that, I immediately thougth of the yellow SUV in the
parking lot outside our condo with the license plate 99ASU.

The owner explained it is Arizona State U class of 1999.    <g>
