Hi
need some info here.  A friend of mine just got told by her pharmacist,
that they Stopped making the injectable MTX.

Anyone know about this, and is it true?

thanks so much

Partially incorrect.  They stopped making the large bottles with
preservative.  I am having no trouble getting the small vials without
preservative.

I bought mine last week at a CVS Pharmacy.  I asked if they had
trouble getting it and the pharmacist said no.  She pulled my vial
from a box full of vials, so they must have some on stock.

No, they're still making it, but for some reason it is in short supply.
Yesterday the military pharmacist said they couldn't get the MTX with
preservative so they gave me ten vials of the MTX they use in the hospital
for the cancer patients.  Once I open one, I have to use it within 24 hours.
So I draw up 1/2 and then THROW AWAY the rest.  That just breaks my heart
when I know how many people need this and can't get it. Sigh.

BIG TIME THANK YOU GUYS AND GALS!!!!

I called my pharmacist because of this discussion and they gave me the
wrong instructions!!!!

I would have used old MTX this Thursday!  It wasn't with preservative.
I will be picking up my 3 other bottles this afternoon.

MANY THANKS AGAIN.

Relax.  Many of us have been doing that for years with no ill affects.  As
long as it's only for a week it's no problem.

Now, that's not what I tell the insurance company.  After all, it says
"Single dose" right on the vial.  So they are now giving me a vial a week.
I will soon have a nice stock pile.

How long do you use a vial Walt?  I've just been using it two weeks, and
should have enough here till February sometime.  Hope they get their act
together by then.

I know lots of folks were using the MTX without preservative for quite a few
weeks with no problem.

I am on 20 mg/week, so I can get two shots out of a vial.  I am careful to
swab the top with alcohol and I keep the needle in its sterile packaging
until I am ready to draw.  I've never had a problem.

You can use the unused portion longer than the 24 hours the pharmacist
says?  Even if its preservative free?

Please explain this to me...I am very interested in hearing how you do
it.  I assume this is working well for you or you wouldn't be doing
it.

Well, this falls into one of those should vs. could issues.  The
manufacturer has issued an advisory stating that the vials should not be
reused.  But, the contamination concern is primarily patient to patient.  In
other words, since I am the only one using the vial, no one else is at risk.

I also am very careful to maintain sterile procedures.  I use two different
alcohol swabs (one for my skin and one for the bottle), and the needle stays
in its packaging until I am ready to draw and inject.  My mother, who was a
diabetic, used to reuse needles.  Now THAT's crazy.

In a perfect world where we had all the resources we needed, I wouldn't
reuse the vials.  But, given reality, it's just one little step I can take
to try and keep things under control, both physically and financially.  If
money isn't an issue for you, by all means, throw away the extra.

BTW, for those on a budget, I get my needles at Sam's club where they cost
$12/hundred for u100 shorts.

As expensive as that stuff is to manufacture, it doesn't seem
reasonable to have both varieties.  Operating two assembly
lines, or having only one and shuting it down and retooling for
a different item does not make sense.

As Henry Ford is quoted as once saying, "You can have it any
color, as long as it's black."

So, why would a drug maker have both non-preservative and
preseravtive "colors" of an otherwise identical item?
Janet R - 01 Dec 2004 05:12 GMT
The price of injectable MTX at Costco is: MTX 25mg/Ml      2ML/Vial
$7.29 per vial.

Compared to my Bextra, Salogen, or even Plaquenil....this stuff is
cheaper per week.

I have no problem getting it in Ontario. They had better NOT stop making it. :-)

I just was told the same thing by the Wal-Mart pharmacy here in New
Mexico! I hope it is not true..I had heard there was a shortage, but I
figured it was something temporary!

When I was told there were no 5mg tablets of folic acid available in
Edmonton, Aberta I did a Google search and came up with the FDA site
which is quite informative. Your answer is also there about MTX.

take care
