Pope Pie \(Sy Lehrman\) - 26 Oct 2004 02:35 GMT I got back from the rheumatologist in Rapid City. The X-rays show no damage as yet, but I was given sulfasalazine and prednesone to take with the diclofenac along with the promise that I would be feeling better in a couple of days.
My sister says that prednesone makes her swell up like a chipmonk but is othrewise effective, but then, she has MS, not RA.
Anyone know anythng about any of this? Any information would be appreciated.
Molto grazie in advance.....

Is the pred just a short term pulse pack or a long-term thing? I took sulphasalazine for several months at the beginning of my treatment, but it made me sick and have mouth sores, so had to switch to gold, then mtx, then Enbrel and Plaquenil.
I haven't yet had to resort to prednisone, but it is a wonder drug for some people. I hope you find your magic bullet.

AChrist787 - 26 Oct 2004 04:04 GMT I have taken sulfasalazine for 10 years with no side effects. Regarding prednisone, we all have a love/hate affair with this particular drug. There is a book entitled "Coping With prednisone" by Eugenia Zukerman and Julie Ingelfinger, M.D. This is an excellent reference work on this particular drug and the multiple side effects it can cause. For many people it has the unfortunate side effect of making you gain weight. For years I lost weight on it, but then I'm weird anyway, LOL. It does cause mood swings, although I'm not sure that happens with short term use.
At any rate, the book is well worth reading and comes in paperback.

Kelly - 27 Oct 2004 00:56 GMT If it is just for a couple of weeks you won't have any lasting effects. probably won't even see the moon face. Unfortunately you will probably see some hunger - also make sure you have sufficient calcium and vitamin D.

Kitty Kelly - 26 Oct 2004 04:17 GMT It took a couple years on pred, but I eventually developed 'moon face'. It went away 2 months after I stopped taking it.
The relief I got was well worth it. I wasn't scheduled for any beauty contests at that time anyway LOL!!!

Geez, you pikers, I've had less than three hours sleep since friday morning LOL!!!
OK, here's a couple stories for you. My childrens' childhoods were the best part of my life. Those 2 still keep me laughing,
When my youngest was almost 12, the 2 of us were driving to the grocery store on Kauai early one morning when he suddenly asks, "How am I doing so far in poverty"? I look at him and say, "Daddy and I make pretty good money, everythings OK, sweetie".
He said, "No mom, how am I doing so far in poverty?". "Honey, really, everythings OK". Exasperated he says, "NO MOM, you know, when you get hair under your arms and other, you know, places?".
Holy sh.t! I'm doing 45 on a twisty road and I lose it bad. I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe. By the time I got to the store, all my mascara was gone.
When I got over the poverty/puberty thing, I had to laugh again because, who the hell asks for a report card on their puberty adventure LOL!!!
When he was 14, I was driving in heavy traffic in Phoenix, when all of a sudden he yells, "Mom look! There's some of those horny christians"! Now, I was bee bopping to the radio so I knew he didn't say what I thought he said. I turn off the radio and say, "WHAT???". "There on the corner, mom - horny christians"!
I look over and there stands a group of Hare Krishnas in their orange robes and bald heads selling flowers. I was laughing so hard I almost had to pull over!
Kids - you gotta love 'em!

Kelly - 26 Oct 2004 12:10 GMT Thanks Kitty. It is 4:00 in the morning and I am awake (sore throat, cold etc.) and you cheered me up! Didn't think anything would make me laugh at this point.
Won't forget those horny christians anytime soon.

Janet R - 26 Oct 2004 14:31 GMT ROTFLMAO.....I just crawled outta bed....and look like do-do.....and now I laughed so hard I nearly tinkled!
That reminds me when my son was about 9ish....and was looking at a rock CD and said the name of the song was a bad word. I said "really, what it is?'
He said, 'Mom, only because you asked...its "crap die, baby!"
I thought....I never heard of that song on that CD...."crap die baby?"
I grab the lyrics sheet.......printed out was Carpe Diem Baby.
I got him a reading tutor PRONTO.
Janet R PS---now when I have a bad day....I say "oh just crap die baby!" I will have to pass that on to the grandkids.

Caroline Marold - 26 Oct 2004 15:27 GMT How much pred did he give you. The chipmunk face need not apply. lol Did get the dreaded puffy face when on 80mg but hope to never do that again. Now down to 5mg and the puffies are long gone. Am also losing the pred hump on my neck back and the hard tire on the tummy from the same thing. But it saved my eyes and I will be increasing the pred again, if only temporally, as I am off one DMARD and my NSAID as surgery approaches. Duckie

Modest and short-term use of prednisone should not cause any problems, but long term use, larger doses, and worst of all, going cold-turkey off large doses, can cause problems.

Smokie Darling (Annie) - 29 Oct 2004 15:41 GMT Keep in mind that Sulfasalazine can make you extremely sun-sensitive. I get hives now if I'm in direct sunlight for more than 10 minutes and sunscreen does NOT help at all, so... Watch the exposure... Smokie Darling (Annie)
