Low Triglycerides?

Just got my latest blood labs and the nuts seemed to
have drawn my cholesterol without my knowledge and
certainly without it being a fasting cholesterol...
Note does say it had been 1.5 hours since I ate.
Let me say that after I had been on South beach for min
of 6 weeks and was tested, my LDL had dropped 50
points, down to 153. This time, I had been on Lipitor
all of 13 days as well as still on South Beach and the
LDL is now drummmmmm rollllll
101.
The HDL went from 66 last time to 80 this time.
The thing that has me wondering is the triglycerides
which is 43 with normal being 56-150.
So what does low Triglycerides mean? A quick peek on
line says I should lower them and says high ones are
not good but says nothing about ones which might be too
low.

Once this knee thing is all set, going to ask my PCP if
we can try dropping the lipitor and just use the south
beach all together. Really wanted to be sure the LDL
was in a good place before surgery due to my mother's
heart issues after her last knee surgery. I tend to
follow in my mother's footsteps, hand trouble and knees
only I am 20 years ahead of her. Sure didn't want the
heart stuff moving up that heredity ladder too soon.
So any guesses on the Triglycerides stuff?

Hi Duckie,
I was reading about very low triglycerides awhile back, so, just did a
search and found the article below. I can't relate your levels to the article.
But, apparently if triglycerides are too low, it's more dangerous to the
cardiovascular system, than if they're too high. When they're too high, the
major consequences are predisposition to diabetes mellitus and pancreatitis.
Recent studies are not proving out that there is as much cardio effect as
previously thought. Too low levels, though, appear to increase stroke severity.
You should definitely talk to your doc about it and find out how your levels
relate to the study numbers. Maybe, you've lowered them to a healthy place,
rather than being too low. Hope this helps.

Low triglycerides tied to more severe stroke
Last Updated: 2004-06-29 14:19:36 -0400 (Reuters Health)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - You should reduce levels of cholesterol and
triglycerides as much as possible, right? Well, in terms of stroke, that advice
may go too far.

Low triglyceride levels are associated with increased stroke severity,
according to results of a study published in the American Heart Association's
journal Stroke.

A previous study had linked low triglycerides with higher mortality after
stroke. In the current study, Dr. Tomasz Dziedzic and colleagues from
Jagiellonian University, in Krakow, Poland, studied 863 consecutive patients
with acute stroke caused by blockage of blood supply to the brain.

The team measured triglyceride levels within 36 hours after stroke onset, and
used the Scandinavian Stroke Scale (SSS) to assess stroke severity when
patients were admitted to the hospital. The patients were put into one of two
groups: those with severe stroke (SSS score of 25 or less) and those with
mild-to-moderate stroke (SSS higher than 25).

Compared to patients with mild/moderate stroke, those with severe stroke had
significantly lower levels of serum triglyceride, the investigators report.

After making adjustments for various other factors that affect stroke risk, the
team found that the risk of severe stroke was 42% lower for patients with
triglyceride levels higher than 2.3 millimoles per liter than for those with
levels below this.

The researchers note that the biological mechanisms responsible for this
association remain unknown. While low triglyceride levels can reflect poor
nutritional status, they note, malnutrition did not explain stroke severity.

"Therefore, we believe that alternative explanations focusing on potentially
neuroprotective properties of cholesterol should be considered," Dziedzic and
colleagues conclude.

Be well, Patty

Thanks Patty. I see her this Thursday [pre surgery
visit] so I will ask her. Stroke is a family trait --
one which I do NOT care to add to my list.

Way to go but please make sure you have your doctor REDO that test.

YOU have to be fasting for 12 hours to get an accurate blood test, so your
levels may even be better.  THAT lab needs to NOT charge you either.
