Hey guys and gals, Bob asked me to ask you if anyone knows of an OTC to take
care of pain that will not raise the liver enzymes.  His biopsy went
extremely well Monday and we still have another week before we can call for
the results, but his bulging disk is still giving him a lot of trouble.  I
told him everything passes through the liver, but he wants to know if there
is one brand better than the others.  I promised I would ask you folks.  He
asked me to "ask the experts" for him.

DeeTee,
Can he take aspirin? It's not as hard on the liver as most of the OTC's. For
me, it's a most amazing painkiller. But, it tears my stomach up after only 1
dose. Also, the old standby nsaids won't affect the liver in the same way that
acetaminophen does. (They're actually harder on the kidneys.) My brother has
cirrhosis and his gastro doc allows him to take ibuprofen when his PA is acting
up. Ice helps my bad disks a lot. It's not very soothing, but, it reduces the
swelling a lot, thus, lessening the pain. Twenty minutes with an ice pack, then
10 minutes with my heating pad often gives me some decent relief. A little bit
of light stretching, Sore No More and Mineral Ice help some, too. Maybe he
could see an accupuncturist? Hope his biopsy results are perfect and that his
back starts feeling better soon! Let us know : )

DeeTee,
The best painkiller who is gentle for the liver is " DAFALGAN 500 mg"  The
active ingredient is Paracetamol. In the whole Europe and Belgium the first
choice is dafalgan, even in the hospitals. You can take 1000 mg (1gram) at
once tree times a day. There is a stronger version Dafalgan + codeine, but
only your doc can prescribe it.

Never heard of that -- maybe a name change when it hits
the states?
Just found it

Paracetamol has been in use as an analgesic for home
medication for over 30 years and is accepted as a very
effective treatment for the relief of pain and fever in
adults and children. The following information on
paracetamol is provided by the Paracetamol Information
Centre. Paracetamol is also known as acetaminophen.

Tylenol. Not sure where it is metabolized though DeeTee.

Paracetamol is acetaminophen, aka Tylenol. It is very hard on the liver,
unfortunately.

Hi Gwen,
Milk thistle helps. But, acetaminophen is still very hard on the liver.
People with liver problems, particularly, shouldn't take acetaminophen at all,
even with milk thistle.  (At least, that's what my brother's gastro doc says.
He takes milk thistle, but, was told never to take acetaminophen again in his
lifetime. He can take ibuprofen sometimes, if he needs it.)

Thanks, everyone.  Yes, it was tylenol raising the liver enzymes, I'm sure.
We'll know more when we get the results.  We'll just have to keep looking.

Hi Diana & Bob,

The only thing I have experanced that helped a bulging disk (& I've had a lot of
them) has been traction & tri-buffered aspirin with milk thistle for liver
protection.

Alex,
what is tri-buffered aspirin?  Tried to look for it on drugstore.com and didn't
find it.  My mom takes every other day aspirin and it just kills her stomach so
I'm looking for a substitute

It is regular 325 mg aspirin coated with a triple layer of magnesium carbonate,
calcium carbonate & magnesium oxide. By the time the buffer layers devolve the
aspirin os in the intestines so there is no stomach upset. I took so many
regular aspirins in the past that I poop blood if I take a regular aspirin. We
get them at Walgreens & a google search on "tri-buffered+aspirin" turned up lots
of other places that sell them.

HTH,

The every-other-day aspirin therapy is to thin the blood and make it so
there are no clots to kill someone.  Aspirin is aspirin (buffering doesn't
help me because my pain is in my bowels.  My dad is on a different blood
thinner that the doc could consider in your mom's case.  Best regards to you
and your mom.

Well now, there's an option.  Tell him not to mess around and just go.  Hope he
feels better soon.
