I know that there are others in the group who have bad feet, so I am sure
that someone has had to go to hand controls for driving.  I am very close to
that decision.  So, what advice do you have?  How effective are the portable
units?  How did you get funding for the conversion?

Anything else I need to know?

I used a company called Ride Away to handicap my car
for my hands [not my feet] but they can do that too. I
think I would ask someone in your area about reputable
companies to handicap cars. Would something like that
be covered by insurance? Maybe your doctor would know.
I was having trouble shifting and starting my car
[turning the key]. They put on a titanium bar so I can
shift left handed. They pull the key and put in
dashboard switches - think race car here -to start my
car. I also have a suicide knob to grasp for steering.
That has been the most important as it gives me so much
better control than trying to grasp the steering wheel
like normal humans. They told me if the titanium bar
didn't work, they could put in a console which looks
rather like the buttons on a microwave which would
allow shifting. Said for $1000.00 he could fix it so I
could shift with my nose if I needed to. lol
Each piece has different prices and depending on your
needs things and prices can vary.
They seem to be able to accommodate each person and
each person's different handicap. When I sat in the car
the first time to try the titanium shifter, the
mechanic who installed it sat in the passenger. I
struggled a bit first and he said to not force as much
and suddenly it shifted easily. I looked so surprised
and turned to the mechanic who had the most glorious
look of pride and satisfaction on his face. So while
the happy tears flowed down my face, he just beamed at
me. Bet most mechanic's don't get that kind of
satisfaction in their work. :)
Hope you find help with that easily.

You might check into the MS sites. My cousin has MS and they fixed his car
up for him.
