Podiatrist and dentist visits

Di - 14 Oct 2004 18:10 GMT As you may remember, I was having all kinds of problems with my ankle, heel and foot. I dx'd myself with plantar fascitis. My sprained ankle is better, though still discolored, and my foot does feel better. But my heel was really bothering me.
I went to the podiatrist on monday. She said that my self dx was right on, and the inflammation was likely due to the extremely pronounced heel bursitis. She highly recommended a cortisone injection. YIKES!!!! I was scared. She admitted that it would hurt, but it would be very fast. She was sooo right. It hurt like a sonnovabitch. I was yowling. But, only for 15 seconds, at most. Here we are, a few days later, and my heel is soo much better. Life is good.
Today, I had an appt with the dentist to discuss the possibility of needing a root canal. Groan, I just don't wanna do this. Well, I got there, and he was ready to do it immediately. Right then and there. As in, NOW. I thought we were only gonna talk about it. After some discussion, wherein I told him I had been researching root canal on the internet, I agreed to just do it. Waiting would have accomplished nothing, but only make matters worse. I was so freakin' scared.
I told him I wanted to feel nothing. NOTHING! I had three injections, and I felt nothing. But, I'm now numb from my eyeball to my chin. And, the right side of my face is really swollen. I chose not to go to work in this sorry a.s condition. <g> He advised me to take painkillers before the numbness wears off, so I took Ultracet. He also suggested that I take more before I go to bed. I hate this.
I'm numb, which is just starting to wear off, and it's starting to feel a bit achy. I'm also hungry, as I haven't eaten anything yet today. But, I'm afraid to eat. I guess maybe I'll eat something that requires no chewing, like yogurt.
So, that's my story this week. It's always somethin'..............

Some, no (or little) pain. One, intense pain. That worst one was with a doc who leaned against my jaw the whole time; I think he strained the muscle.
Ice your cheek!!! even before the novocaine wears off (just for ten minutes at a time, till you can feel it). Take pain killers. Ibuprofen works particularly well for tooth pan and swelling (or so says my endodontist), so you might want to add some to the mix if you can take it. Did he give you any abx? Eat whatever you feel like eating (though, it's hard to eat/drink when your face is numb). Just avoid really heavy chewing like steaks or chops for a day or two.

I've never had any dental work before, other than fillings, and I was SCARED. But, I'm doing OK. I took some Ultracet a few times today, and I'm actually feeling better, though it's still quite sore. I ate some oatmeal, which I cooked to a fairly soft (somewhat overcooked) consistency. And, later I had a cream cheese and jelly sandwich. I'm hungry now, but I'm all carbed out. :-\ Steaks and chops are not something I'm very inclined to eat anyway. :-)

Gwen Love - 14 Oct 2004 21:21 GMT Hope you get along really well from the root canal. Glad you went ahead and had it done instead of dreading it. Gwen

Nann Bell - 15 Oct 2004 03:38 GMT Did the dentist give you anything else for pain? I truly have needed T3s with my root canals. Usually they only give me a dozen or so, but it gets me through that first day or two.
I hope next week is better. How's the rest of the bod doing?

He said I should take ibuprofens. But, I really found the need for something stronger, so I took Ultracet. It's ok that he didn't give me any. I hoard painkillers, so I have a stash just for times like this.
Rest of my bod is doing fairly well, actually. My foot, heel and ankle are much better. My back is healed. Now, I'm just dealing with a relatively mild impingement syndrome in my right shoulder, for which I have an orthopod appt next month. My RD really wants me to get it evaluated, just in case I can head off a major shoulder meltdown like what happened to my left shoulder. Adhesive capsulitis sucks as much, if not more than pretty much anything else I've ever experienced. I just don't wanna repeat that misery if I can help it.
As for arthritis, I'm holding my own. Right hip OA seems to be progressing, but I refuse to worry about it. I walk alot with my doggie, so that really helps.
Thanks for asking. :-)

Squirrely - 15 Oct 2004 06:44 GMT Di,
I hope that the injection works for you and takes away the foot pain. Wishing you the best of luck with that one.
Oh I hope your tooth stops hurting soon and that you will be able to eat some good food soon. I don't like root canals. I have TMJ.

The heel injection worked amazingly well. Truly, the pain in my heel is gone. My entire foot feels better than it's felt in months, ever since I sprained my ankle.
My tooth, however, is another story. Boy, do I hurt. I went to work today, only taking ibuprofens. By the time the day was over, I was in some serious PAIN. I took a couple of Ultracets when I got home, and spent the evening in a kind of mildly drugged stupor. A couple of hours ago, I took some more ibuprofen. I still hurt alot. Actually, it seems to feel worse. I think it may be because the anesthetic is completely worn off. Or else, my right cheek and jaw are in the process of falling off. <sigh> I'm not a happy camper tonight. :-(

Nann Bell - 16 Oct 2004 19:31 GMT ((((((Di))))))) it should improve a lot over the next couple of days. The mouth and jaw can be really sore after going through all that trauma. If it isn't improving at least some by Monday though, call that dentitst back! You don't want more problems developing in there - and this is from one who developed an abcess at the top of a root canal, 17 years later!

But I've gotta tell you, Sweety. When I read the subject line...I had to laugh a bit. I was wondering what the body of the message was going to be. I was thinking something about "Foot in Mouth Disease". LOL Mag
