Anyone know about Pennsaid?

A couple of people have mentioned Pennsaid and how effective it is. Does anyone
know about it? I looked it up and it is not approved yet in the U.S. (presently
under review) but other places are using it. It sounds to me like a topical form
of Arava as they both contain the same thing. According to Google it is used for
osteoarthritis. I have both OA and RA. The person I talked with said it works
well for her and one other person she knows. It is applied three times a day.
She told me it took about ten days to work. I want to ask my RD about it when I
see him next month. Thought I would ask here if anyone uses it. It is OTC in
some places, available in Canada, the UK and some other countries.

My rheumy prescribed it for me about a year ago. It does work well,
but is best for smaller areas. It is not arava, but rather voltarin an
nsaid that is mixed with dmso for delivery through the skin.

I must confess that I have not used it that often- I tried it on a
wrist when i was having a particular problem and at the base of the
thumb. I don't expect that it would do much for my hip.

I don't know about the ten day business, it was fairly effective for
me overnight that time in that it enabled me to move the joint to a
greater degree. There was not a substantial decrease in pain, however
i did not reapply as often as is recommended either.

It is fairly expensive, but then what else is new?

Sounds a lot like diclofenac gel, which was prescribed for my OA. Loved it,
and it only cost me (two years ago) $12 for a month's supply.

hmmm. same thing. I wonder why the difference in price. I don't
believe i still have the receipt but the size i got was very pricey-
more than 60 dollars for a few mls. I don't know how long that would
last with ordinary use.

I'll have to go through my old stuff and see if I can find out what size it
was. Could be that a month's supply is a very different amount for each of
us.

It is declofenac, don't know if it is a gel or not. My friend says it costs her
$50.00 a bottle and that lasts for a month using it twice a day.

Yeowch. I think I'll stick to compounding my own ibuprofen gel. The
20% gel I make is super cheap if I buy the giant bottles of generic tablets
as my starting material. I just need to find where the guys stored my bucket
of gel base when we moved in here. It's about time for a new batch. I make
32oz at a time, which lasts about 3 months for my brother and myself.

If it has really become so expensive, I think you have the right idea.
Now... would I actually get around to mixing it?

I'm thinking it may have been cheaper for me because I bought a smaller
vial... only for one knee and one shoulder most of the time.
