My book arrived on Friday and Myron and I began the diet today.  We spent the
weekend cleaning out cupboards, and the frig and freezer.   Sent a whole bunch
of stuff off to my brothers house.  But we are very serious about this.
Probably more serious about this, than anything else, besides our marriage.
Wish us luck.

I hope you are as happy with this as I have been.  The first two weeks went
by in a hurry.  I really like the idea of not measuring everything.  And the
idea that if you are hungry, you should eat more.  (Of the right stuff)

I'm guessing that the diet is still evolving, and there are some
contradictions in the book that can be confusing.  Still in all its pretty
easy to follow.

Charlie hasn't followed it as closely as I have but he does listen to the
"rules" and reasons.  But if he even follows it for the most part it should
improve his blood sugar and triglicerides.  Working on convincing him that a
wine cooler made with diet 7up is a lot better for him than a beer.  He
always believed he didn't like diet drinks, and likely hasn't knowingly
tasted one in years.  But with wine added who can tell?  Besides he likes
diet soda fine if he doesn't know that is what he is drinking.  And he will
drink the Coke Gold if that is all that is cold in the refrigerator.

Lots of luck with both of your diets.  I can't do it because I lost 125
pounds and am at my proper weight.  Just remember "one step at a timemakes a
successful journey." I know you can do it.

Best of luck, Char!  You're already doing better than I have if you talked
him into going on south beach!  LOL  did talk Mike into eating less and
making more of it veggies and fruit, but that's all.  I truly hope it works
well for both of you.

Best of luck with this Char.  One thing-when you read the book, go with the big
picture.  Your mind works like mine does and the contrdictions will drive you
crazy if you don't decide before hand that there is a larger picture.

I am not reading the book, word for word.  Nor am I taking anything as gospel.
So far I have read the parts of the book pertinent to Phase One of the diet.
Also checked into the website.  There is a lot of valuable information there.
Costs $5 a week, which didnt seem like much, so I signed up.  They failed to
say they would be taking out the money for 13 weeks at one time.  The credit
card I used, is directly attached to our checking account.  So it took $65 out
of our checking account that we cant really afford this week.  So I am going to
cancel it.  But there is a minimum $20 charge.  So I am going to glean as much
as I can in the next 4 weeks ($20 worth) and then cancel.

BTW The dessert you make using ricotta cheese is awful.  lol  My dog liked it.

That stuff is deal awful isn't it. I think I don't like ricotta cheese.
Thinking the same thing made with no fat cream cheese would taste a
whole lot better. Haven't bothered though because I found sugar free -
fat free chocolate pudding by Jell-O. Of course, that was after eating
the Jell-O made with soda for Phase One.

Welcome back, Duckie! How do you make the Jello with soda? Sub for the water?
Same amounts? I mentioned it to my kids and they want to try it. Thanks : )

Yep -- same amount as the water. Just look for a soda that matches the
flavor of the jello. Found I really didn't like the lime but guess that
is just me. Orange, black cherry, cherry, raspberry, and lemon...

I'll eat almost anything.  Seldom met a meal I didn't like.  But I have one
firm rule.  I don't do green jello.  I used to think hospitals just served
it all the time to punish the patients in some way.  Now I realize they
can't serve anything with red dye because of tests.  So they are kind of
stuck with green.  But it has the most unnatural color on earth for a food
product.

I tried making jello with diet 7up.  That worked well too.

It was funny one night, I'm starting to make my peach jello and looking
everywhere for the peach soda.  Asked both Charlie and Michael if they drank
it, not that I can imagine either one of them drinking a diet peach soda.
Finally Michael looked in the refrigerator and found it for me.

I found some at Big Lots the other day - sugar free Jell-o called "sparkling
Wild Berry" that tells you to use club soda or seltzer for the cold water so
maybe they are starting to catch on.  Unfortunately, somehow it came out too
sweet made with the soda I bought.  Still ate it, but it took longer.

oh, and they say on the box that cans and smaller bottles have the most
carbonation.

The carbonation is supposed to make it sparkle.

>That stuff is deal awful isn't it. I think I don't like ricotta cheese.

An alternative that I whipped up is fat-free cottage cheese with sugar-free
gelatin (dry) mixed in.  Seems to help curb my sweet tooth.

As for the ricotta cheese stuff---it is the texture more than anything, that
seems to be a problem.
I didnt use their recipes for the desserts, but as usual, branched out on my
own.  I have flavored oils that I use in candy making.  So I mixed Splenda with
the ricotta (to taste), and that added a few drops (and it doesnt take many) of
these flavored oils.  Some of them turned out OK, except for the texture.  The
first one was awful.  It was supposed to be chocolate.  Not sure what it was,
but it didnt taste like chocolate.  Maybe I didnt use enough oil.
Did make some using peanut butter flavored oil.  The dessert was really good.
And lemon oil also made an acceptable dessert except for the texture issue.

Hello:

Sweet tooth huu?  My biggest problem.  Although I am not much overweight I
am always trying to get rid of the pounds I am over.  The culprit I am
positive is sugar.  Cant' have my coffee or tea without 3 heaping spoonful
of sugar and so dislike the taste of artificial sugars,  I did however read
about a product called "Stevia" http://www.stevia.net/ and wonder if any of
you ever tried it and what you think of it.  I am tempted to order some and
check it out.  Always worry about unknown side effects being on all those
meds.

Nocki

Good luck with your diet Char !
kelly - 24 Jul 2004 19:44 GMT
I tried it and thought it was awful.  I prefer splenda if I have to have
anything but my real preference is just to cut back the amount of sugar I
use.  It is in the drug store up here and in the grocery store.

Kelly in Canada
Jo Firey - 24 Jul 2004 21:32 GMT
I really love Splenda as a sweetener.

And for those with a sweet tooth.  I've finished phase one with good
results.  I'm starting phase two, and still trying to get that a bit better
organized.  (I think I've discovered I should avoid wheat entirely)

I haven't been a saint about the program, but even when not following the
rules such as they are I've tried to stay away from sugar and starches.
(Example, ordered a double cheese burger from McDonalds.  But ordered it
without catsup and didn't eat the bun.)

Once in a while I've treated myself to a small piece of dark chocolate.
There is usually a bowl of Hershey's mineratures around for the grandkids
and their friends.  One night I grabbed a Milk Chocolate instead and it
didn't even taste good.  Too sugary.

I haven't been drinking any milk even on phase two.  Last night I did take a
drink of milk and believe it or not it tasted sweet.

So this diet does retrain your taste buds away from sugar if you let it.

Congratulations.

We got thru week one of phase one, but Myron cheated and had a candy bar and I
have been using powdered non dairy creamer in my coffee.  So we are going to do
phase one an extra week, I think.

We have found that the diet keeps us prettty full most of the time.

Today should be interesting.  We are having a family get together.  A picnic
type menu.  But my brother is doing Adkins, so there should be enough things we
can eat.

And then we attended the family get together on Sunday.  There was nothing
there that we could legitimately have on the diet.  So for the most part, we
just ate what was there in moderation.  But we WILL be doing phase one an extra
week.

But the family function was wonderful.  We had not been all together since the
holidays in 02.  And the vast majority of the family was there.  It was just
wonderful.  The weather was perfect (mid 70s)  The kids were all well behaved.
And so were the adults. My Mom was there.  We had planned this for about a
month ago, and she ended up in the hospital.  So she was on strict orders to
not do that again. lol  I could go on and on, but it wouldnt mean anything to
anybody.  But, I had a wonderful time.  And I would do it again in a heart
beat, even if I have been up all nite in pain.

Sounds like you had a wonderful day.

If the third week of Phase I starts to drag, go on ahead to Phase II

Having oatmeal for breakfast and apple slices with your peanut butter does
brighten the day.  Note a small bannana is allowed.  That is a change since
the original books

And while you are on the web sited. wake sure you get all the information
for quick feeding when you really don't have time for a meal.

I'm saving a lot of menu plans and reciepes onto my computer

I never saw anything about being charged 13 weeks up front either.  Or about
any minimum.  I'm pretty good at spoting that kind of thing.  But so far its
been wirth money.

Try Splenda instead. It has very little after taste and the Stevia I
didn't really care for. If you have a health food store locally, they
may give you a sample to try.
Otherwise, Splenda is available in the grocery store.

The ricotta cheese dessert is pretty bad isn't it?  The some of them do have
very good flavor, particularly the lime.  But the texture.....

I played around with it a bit.  Made 2 servings at a time, about doubled the
sweetner, processed it in the blender and added enough fat free half n half
to get it to process.  Still won't be a family favorite but it was edible.
And it is filling.

I read somewhere that most libraries buy another copy of a book for every 3
holds they have per currently owned copy.  I have no idea if that really is
common, but it might explain why I've gotten my hands on some books earlier

Just wanted you to know that I was on Phase Two the day we left for SF.
I actually managed to lose a couple of more pounds while we were away.
That still startles me. Anyway, I am down 17 now. The first two weeks in
Phase One were the hardest. And what ever you do, don't let yourself get
hungry. Eat a snack between meals. That mozzarella stick was my
lifesaver. Was worried about the trip as no airline is giving away food
but by then I was able to have whole wheat bread so made 1.5 peanut
butter and nothing but whole wheat sandwiches to take. I also found the
most wonderful product which I need to praise Skippy about. It is peanut
butter in a push up tube. It says one tube is 25g. Not sure how that
converts but it doesn't eat like much more than 2 T. But it was very
convenient. I was able to keep a couple in my fanny pack and snack when
I needed to. They are really tiny and take up very little room.
Good luck to you both Char.
