It has been two weeks today since my elbow surgery and I'm feeling better
each day. When I saw the Dr. and he took the cast off, he said to put
moisturizing lotion on the scar. Have any of you used lotion for a scar,
and if so, what kind? I have been using the moisturizer that I use on my
face but don't know if there would be something better to use on it. Any
suggestions would be welcome.

When I had laser removal of a plantar's wart, the dr gave me a vitamin E
cream that worked well on the scar. I now use it to help heal sunburn on my
face when I have misjudged my time in the sun. Not sure of the
concentration, though and whether other lotions with E will have the same
affect.
Wonder how helpful it would be to just rub the contents of vitamin E
capsules over the scar?

I have seen it done on the scars of operations by great nurses twice with
my fathers operations. They would snip a Vit-E softjell and rub the
contents on the scar. The one that was all the way down his front was
nothing but a white line and even that went away a little.

Both my husband and I had surgeries last year and the surgeons said to
use vitamin E oil. A less expensive and easier way to use it than
cutting open capsules is to get a bottle of vitamin E oil. We are in
Oregon, USA and we get it at Rite Aid.

Adelle, my PT just told me yesterday that Vit E oil was excellent...
I've been using Vaseline Creamy with Vit E and it's been very helpful!

A number of years ago, I had a thick scar removed from the palm of my L hand
(scarred from a major burn as a toddler). The doctor at that time said get
vitamin E capsule, open them and rub the E oil into the skin graft. It worked
really well.

I have been using Fruit of the Earth Vitamin E Skin Cream on my huge (11
inches) hip replacement scar. The doc who did the surgery recommended using
pure Vitamin E oil, which I did but it's kind of greasy, so I switched to the
cream.
This skin cream is so nice I use it all over my body and even on my face. It's
pure white, no coloring, no scent, and it disappears right into the skin.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea what my scar looks like now. It's been
almost 5 years since my surgery and I seldom take the time to peer at my rump
in the mirror. Maybe I'll take a look the next time I shower.

I used a combination of cocoa butter and vitamin E oil. I melted the cocoa
butter slightly in the micro and mixed the vitamin E oil into it. Used it on
surgery scars.

I've used vitamin E oil at times and a cocoa butter/aloe blend at times.
Both worked well for me, but then I don't scar too much anyway.

Hi Mary
I used Vitamin E on the incisions from my joint replacement. Just open a
capsule and rub it in. Works very well.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Vitamin E seems to be the way go!
I went to physical therapy for the first time today and she also suggested
getting vitamin E oil. On the way home from physical therapy I stopped at
the drugstore and bought some vitamin E cream. I thought the cream would be
less messy than the oil. At physical therapy Lisa, my therapist, gently
massaged my scar quite a bit and wants me to do it at home twice a day to
break up any underlying scar tissue. She said to do the massage, though,
without using cream or oil. She also gave me some very low-key stretching
exercises to do it home. I'm definitely going to do all of my "homework"
each day since I'm very motivated to getting back to normal and being able
to knit again!

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. But Vitamin E is an oil isn't it? So if
you bite the end off a Vit E capsule you know you are getting plenty of Vit
E, but if you are using lotion, you are getting lots of something else and a
little Vit E.
When I've used the opened capsules on scars, I put the amount on the scar
that I can rub in. I put the rest on my lips. Great for chapped lips.

I always just pierced the capsule with a straight pin and squeezed out the
necesssary amount. Then the rest stayed in the capsule until I needed it.

Jo, that's a good point about the lotion diluting the vitamin E. I'm going
to pick up some vitamin E capsules when I go out today. I don't one take
any chances of the lotion not doing the job.

The massage part is a usual and wise suggestion, but I was always told to do
it WITH cream. Using cream or oil with the massage keeps your fingers from
sticking to the skin and irritating it, plus you get the moisturizing
benefits along with breaking up the forming scar tissue. I was told, by PTs,
to do scar massage with cream or oil after my carpal tunnel releases and
after the surgery for my broken wrist, so I used their advice after my
hysterectomy as well.
