Hi my name is Scott Smart,
I have osteoarthritis in my knees, chronic back pain, and chronic
fatigue syndrome. I have been looking for a good support newsgroup
and from reading a lot of your post this seems like a pretty loving,
caring, but honest group. Some of the groups I looked at had people
being pretty mean and rude to each other.
Any way I just want to introduce my self I am a physical therapist and
facilitator. I work primarily with brain injury. I have a lot of
heavy transfers and my knees and back have taken a beating.
I always look for natural and non-surgical solutions first. Does
anyone have experience with supplements for joint health (glucosamine?
Omega-3?) or natural pain relief solutions?
Thanks for being here for a resource and support,
Scott Smart

Hi Scott,
I have RA not Osteo but I can tell you that many people here have had good
luck with glucosamine and chondroitin. Try both together and the
glucosamine alone - people seem to react different to both. A lot seems to
depend upon how far gone your knees are too.
As a physical therapist I suspect you know all the usual but will mention
them anyhow. Proper shoes, proper lifting techniques, building up large
muscles to support those knees and the back, using reachers instead of
bending down and any other aids you need such as long handled tools. Ice,
heat depending on the situation. Relaxation is a good natural pain relief
and some here have had good results with accupuncture and water exercise
classes. Pacing yourself will help with the chronic fatique - make a must
do, a would like to do, should do list every day. Try to cut them down if
necessary and plan rest times between activities that you know are going to
be tiring.
Hope this is of help - stick around we always like to have new people
around. Lots of both resources and support here.

Scott, welcome to the group...
I hope you are sincere in wanting to be here other than for
"suggesting" certain things...
My husband has had good results using gs and we are looking into the
Omega 3 as I've read that it help with inflammation.
You have found the best group on the net...
