when i was on my honeymoon, i came home, went to get my refills of my pain meds
and found that someone had refilled one on one of the days we were gone. Came
right through the drive through of the pharmacy, paid cash, it was even charged
to my health insurance. I switched pharmacy's of course as i realized that they
never card people, and that anyone can find your empty b ottle or bag that
comes if i dont shred the info. Luckily my dr.'s office has complete and total
trust in me to know that i wouldnt lie. man, it was a bummer though to be
accused of being a liar and a theif by walgreens.

just an fyi..be careful..

Marnie - I take a permanent black marker and cross out my name, the drug
name and the rx number off the bottle before I put it into the trash. I also
shred anything with the written info on it.  Call me paranoid, but hey, I
don't like taking chances!  I'm glad your doctor trusts you!  I have been
having to send my teenage son to pick up my meds lately which I hate to do.
But this week, a vacation substitute pharmacist requested his ID even tho' I
had called and said he was coming in. Made me feel better.

This is EXACTLY what I do.  The labels that will peel off (retail
pharmacy) I stick on a piece of paper and shred, and the ones that
won't (my mail-in pharmacy) I use a black permanent marker to mark out
all print.  I do the same thing with everything that has my name,
address or any other information on it before it goes in my trash.
I've read about too many folks out there that went through legal and
financial difficulties from ID theft, to take any chances.

When you're on stuff like Oxycodone, Vicodin, Duragesic and other
things like that, especially if your neighbors and friends know you
have a chronic illness and are in pain a lot, it only takes a word to
the wrong person to cause problems.  I don't want to put temptation in
anyone's path, or give them an opportunity to cause problems for me.
The government already makes it difficult enough for chronic pain
patients to receive the stronger medications, and puts restrictions on
the doctors in writing them.  Why contribute to the problem.  All
these steps may seem silly and unnecessary, but this isn't aspirin
we're talking about.  I don't want my name on a prescription bottle
that some druggie has on them if they get arrested somewhere for
something.

This is just my perspective.  I worked retail pharmacy from 1974
through 1995 off and on, until the year I was paralyzed from Guillaine
Barre Syndrome. I finally let my pharmacy certification expire 2 years
ago when I realized I would probably never be able to work again.  But
over the years, I called the cops for quite a few prescription
forgeries.  With the high volume pharmacies around now, and everything
computerized, the criminals are finding new and improved ways of
stealing drugs.

I had something similar happen with my hubbys rx. Someone was trying to
refill his antibiotic, and the nurse from our drs office called to ask me
about it and I was shocked to hear that. My hubby wasn't even sick. I told
her I wasn't sure what was going on but that I would call the pharmacy and
ask them. Well it was wal greens and someone was trying to fill my hubbys
rx. I never thought of marking through the names on the rx. Since then I
have changed pharmacies. Their excuse was that someone must of had  a
similar name. No they do not check ids to make sure you are the person
picking up the meds. Thank goodness I know my pharmacist on a first name
basis and he knows me too. Sorry about the spelling and the incomplete
thoughts but I have brain fog and swollen fingers tonight.

Scary.  I used to obliterate my Rx info back in Boston when we were recycling
my med containers because I KNEW they'd be handled by people who'd see the
info.  I'd never heard of anyone having trouble yet at that time, but just
worried a bit.  Haven't been doing it here as it all goes in the big dumpster
for the complex, no recycling.  After your story though, I guess I'll go back
to doing it.  Where's that big ol' black magic marker.........

guess I won't complain about WalMart always assking for my birthdate - at
least that double checks a little bit.

So sorry this happened.  Hope you got it all straightened out
including the insurance.  Thanks much for the warning.  I've never
been carded for an Rx except when picking up narcotics.  My husband
usually pulls the label off the pill bottles before throwing them away
and I thought he was being paranoid.  Now nothing will go out in the
garbage with info on it.  hummmm.... I wonder if I can stick the whole
pill bottle in our shredder which chews up floppy discs, credit cards,
CDs as well as paper?

I would be making a big fuss to Walgreen's headquarters about this.  I'm
certain they have better controls they are supposed to follow than this, and
to act like it was your fault when you were out of town is inexcusable.  Go
on their web site and complain.  If they are this careless their employees
could be having a field day.  They should insist on caller ID being
available for the phone that calls in the RX and on at least confirming a
birthdate when picking up.  Since all the information is available to their
employees, its pretty presumptuous of them to blame this on you.  They
always ask me for DOB for my RX and for Charlie's DOB when I pick his up,
and they know me.

Thanks for the info Marnie. Means I will quit just tossing mine. At
least most, but not all, of the pharmacist know me but that doesn't mean
there might not be something go wrong.

Fortunately I get mine through the military and, believe me, THEY check
identification!! You can't even get TO the pharmacy without having to go
through two separate security checkpoints and then they check you again at
the window.  Heaven help me if I ever lose the ID cards we're issued!  I
never even thought that someone might get my personal info from the labels.
I do check for anything with a SSAN on it.  Those get shredded. Tells you
just how sad this world has become, doesn't it?

Oh Marnie,

I am sorry this happened to you but glad your dr was on your side about it.

This world keeps getting worse and worse at what people find to do to mess
up other peoples lifes.

I am glad you were able to get your meds after all that.

BTW, I'm passing this one to the rest of my family.  We're all on several
somethings these days and some of it might be desirable to others.  Tahnks
again for telling us the tale, Marnie;
