For those on mtx, what dose do you take of grape seed extract and milk
thistle. I've had a little thinning of hair on and off from thyroid issues,
but it seems to have kicked into high gear just the past day or two. I'm
sure it must be too soon for the mtx to be causing it but I figured it
couldn't hurt adding grape seed to the meds list. While I was picking that
up I figured I'd get some milk thistle. Dosage?? And did it just help keep
the liver counts down or did anyone find it helped with side effects? No
matter how much water I guzzle I feel like I have morning sickness for about
4 days. non-stop flares aren't helping. I'll be heading off to the Seattle
area for my son's pirate camp tomorrow. Can't wait to hear my brother
comment on my new "Fred Sandford" walk.

Thanks,

I dont take grape seed extract, but do take the milk thistle.

I take 2 125mg capsules once a day.  An as far as I know, it doesnt help with
side effects.

Are you on oral MTX?  Sometimes injectible totally eliminates side effects.  A
high dose of folic acid might help too.

Thanks, Char. I'm on 5mg of folic acid a day. And I am on oral. I asked for
injectable but doc wanted to spare me another needle stick (like I really
care about one more pinch a week) and said to just give the oral a try. He
also said if it's bad I could split the dose. I don't think that will work
given I took mtx Monday night and still have that queasy feeling in the back
of my throat this morning. The only time I don't notice it is when I'm
either biking or in the pool working hard, which has been difficult because
of the flares. I am thinking that starting me off on a 20 mg dose might have
something to do with the severity of the side effcts. My poor old body just
hasn't had time to work up to it.

On the plus side I've dropped 4 lbs, although my husband is starting to
freak out and is pushing pasta and bread on me. Never thought I'd have to
worry about keeping weight on.

Milk thistle - 175 mg extract per capsule, I alternate between 1 and 2
capsules/day.  The only side effect I've had from mtx is fatigue.  The milk
thistle didn't seem to help with that at all, just helped the liver enzymes.
If it's mostly nausea you still have, the injectible form might help a lot,
as Char says.

Grape seed extract - I take Grape Seed Plus from WalMart because it's cheaper
than the straight Grape Seed (go figure), 50 mg extract per capsule, one
capsule/day.

Biotin - this is another one that helps both hair and nails, I take around
1500 mcg/day.  The size of the pills varies depending on who is running a
sale  :), but I word it out to somewhere in that vicinity.

Thanks for the info. I think I'll look for the Biotin since my nails have
become atrocious in the past few years with thyroid issues.

I am curious as to what all your opinions are about supplements/herbs.    Is
there really a big difference in quality with the supplements bought at a
Health Food Store,  rather than buying them at Walmart or the grocery
stores?   There is a BIG difference in the price of course!  Isn't 500mg of
glucosamine Sulphate, the same in whatever brand you buy?    What do you
think?

What you are looking for is a brand with a good reputation to actually
delivering what their label says is there. Go to Dr. Theo's site and
read what he says. He several brands to an independent testing agency
and they told him which ones were consistent.
