I just got word that a very close friend of mine was killed in a car
accident last night. They were running a raft shuttle in idaho lost
control of the vehicle then crashed in to the river and she drowned.
Her husband was packing up the boat. I am stunned. They stopped at
my house on the way to run the clearwater, and I was invited to go on
the trip. Incredible.... I can't believe it happened. They are my
rafting friends; we did the Grand Canyon together, and we were
scheduled for a couple trips this summer. This is the second friend
I have lost this summer, I couldn't stay at work... I am just too

Thanks everyone it helps to have some sympathy. More of the story has
emerged this afternoon and my friend Gay (who was killed) was
shuttling cars for the river trip. My friend Karen was in the lead
vehicle and she lost contact with Gay on the CB radio so she back
tracked but couldn't find her so she stop back at camp to get the
guys. They back tracked looking for her and saw where she had gone
off the road. One of the guys rushed down the bank and pulled her out
of the vehicle. Her seat belt was still on and the cab was covered in
water. By then it was too late. They were about 2 hours from any
medical services. They were on the North fork of the Clearwater in
Idaho.
I can't imagine how my friends must feel today. She will be cremated
tomorrow then they head back to Oregon for the memorial. Incredibly
sad and shocking. They were here last Thursday. It will be a very
sad 4th of July. -- MZ

Thanks all it is a comfort. My friends are all pretty distraught
right now. The Sheriffs office and Forest Service were worried about
Mike (Gays husband) having a gun because he was so upset. I guess she
didn't want to drive that vehicle and the shuttle, and Mike asked her
to do it. He is blaming himself, Karen is feeing guilty because she
didn't look back sooner. Corner is looking into whether any of Gay's
meds might have caused her to black out. They are in a state of shock,
I will try to call Karen again today. I hope they will be safe
driving home after all of this. I guess Larry had to dive in fairly
deep to get to the cab and break the window with a rock. Mike wants to
sell his raft, I will see if they need help this weekend and maybe
head down that way. She was a nurse and hospital administrator, well
liked by her peers. They put flowers and cards in her office, I guess
everyone in the hospital was pretty shocked. When I had trouble with
Pacificare and my infusion Gay offered to give them to me at home.
She had done many Chemo treatments when she was a nurse. -- MZ

Is it possible that something happened to her to make her loose control
of the car? Thinking heart problems here but might be something else.
More than likely she was just knock unconscious on her trip down the
bank. So very sad.

I just got off the phone with Karen. She said the car tracks just
drove off the edge, and they were driving slow. She said there were
squirrels in the road and wondered if she had swerved to avoid it.
They are in the Columbia Gorge headed home I will be taking off for
Ashland and will spend the weekend. We will help Mike clean out the
closets, cry and laugh together and just remember. They said the
rescue team and authorities in Orofino were extremely kind and
helpful. Mike is doing a bit better but still in shock, they have
spent every minute with him. Gay was cremated today. I have shed
many tears over this one and will shed many more. Imagine going on a

I think it will be good for all of you to get together this weekend.
Hopefully, you can help Mike and Karen deal with all of this some more. It
especially sounds like MIke needs friends surrounding him and keeping an eye
on things for a while. All of your are blessed to have such good friends to
help in times like these but your closeness makes it even more devastating
whne someone is lost. Give each other lots of hugs........

(Long-time lurker.) I remember reading a last-page-of-the-magazine essay in
_Outside_ years ago. A father had lost his son, who had been kayaking in
New Zealand. Of course, the father was grief-stricken. But he also said
that it helped him to know that his son was living the life he loved -- even
tho' that life had associated risks & dangers. It only helps a tiny bit, I
find, to reflect upon this when I've lost friends -- but it does help, for
me, that tiny bit. May your heart, and the hearts of your friends', find
ease with time.

I like the butterfly :-) When my Mom passed away, a friend gave me a
copy of "Another Star in the Sky" by David Arkenstone. The title song
comes from a Native American legend that says that when someone dies,
another star appears in the sky. I knew my Mom's would be a very bright
one, and the music helped heal the pain.

A river friend of mine is a poet so we asked her to write a poem and
she just sent this out. I just love it, it captures essence of what I
love about the river and friends:
Exhale into wilderness.
Journey with rivers
Wisdom in the flow.
Complete the evening circle,
Crystal rings of laughter
Beneath the stars.
Tell the stories again
