Went on a trip, came back, computer seemed ok.  Came back from dinner and
discovered I could not get on the net without re-booting.  After re-booting,
I could stay on a few minutes before the stall.  First guy replaced LAN
card--no help.  Second guy replaced router and a cable.  No help.  Outlook
Express seems ok.  Any ideas.  Thanks.  Jano

Is your virus protection up to date and have you run a scan or your
whole system lately?  I would do that first and then I would defrag the
machine. My husband had downloaded his entire computer into mine when
his was breaking. After he finally got his back, he burned a cd off mine
of all his stuff and then gave me permission to trash the folder. It
took 10 mins to send it to the trash. lol  I defragged the system after
that. Actually I did it over and over again as it got less fragmented
with each.
Be sure to go to display and disable the screen saver and set the
machine [plugged in of course] to always on.  Then go to Start>
accessories??>system tools> disk defrag
If you have something called system restore, you might want to set a
point after the virus update and scan and before the defrag. Then you
should do it again after the defrag.
Or it could be something else. :)

Get spybot search and destroy, you could have adware messing up your puter.

Rhonda-

I am not too sophisticated about the computer.  Do not believe I have Spybot
but I do have LavaSoft Ad-Aware and run it often.  Also keep Norton updated.
Thanks.  Jano

Yes, me too and I still got a virus.  I am sorry to say that you also need a
firewall.   Norton, or McAfee are both good.

Same problem on my neighbor's computer the other day,  a complete virus scan
found two types of virus and that cured the problem.

Do you have a firewall?  If my firewall has been on overnight and well into
the morning, it will not "release" to use the net until I reboot.

Ya know what worries me about my firewall??? I got a notice from Mcafee that
I should get an update.   Update?????    Its not like Norton anti-virus that
has to come out with an update everytime one of the little bast@#$s think up
a new wrinkle or virus.
I always thought that a wall was a WALL.  It seems I need new bricks for
my wall.  Oh well.

ps   its a mystery to me.

My Zone Alarm Pro firewall updates all the time. Guess it needs bigger
and higher bricks..  :)

I have a router with a built in firewall. Even routers have firmware
updates.

Good point - on-the-fly reconfiguration is one of the
greatest strengths of software.

At various times in history there have been cultures which
have built structures with the intention that they would
stand for all eternity.  In some cases fragments of these
structures still remain standing today, but as a general
rule even the sturdiest artifacts of mankind require
maintenance.

LOL,,, if you look at the virus list with Norton it is close to 17,000.
Norton and Zone Alarm are both trying to protect you in slightly different
ways and it takes both of them.
If we had spent the money and went with Mac instead of a PC,,, I think
they are up to maybe 5.
My youngest son and I used to play games and Mac just did not have the
choices of games.
Harv

Ps   I really resent the money I spend for Norton and McAfee.   Its like
blackmail to keep the bully on the block off your back but it is part of our
world and something to deal with.

DiWitt-

I tried a 'firewall/ZoneAlarm" suggested by this newsgroup and could not do
any on-line searching so did my best to take it off.  Some files still seem
to be in the computer.  We went to Kansas City this week and I stopped at
CompUSA (where I purchased the computer) and the Geek suggested I re-install
the Recovery Disc.  I'll need a helper as I don't think I know enough not to
goof it up.  I also purchased some CDRW discs for backing things up
(suggested by computer helper No. 2).  Thanks.  Jano

If you couldn't do any online searching it was probably the way you had it
configured. When there is a big threat looming, I raise my security levels
and it will slow down my surfing, but for most part I have no problems. Some
sites have pop-ups that are integral to their use. When I find a site I just
can't get into, I turn that part of the firewall off. That usually works.
