Go to this site and then click numbness and tingling.

note: Having carpal tunnel syndrome does not rule out RA my any means.

RA can cause carpal tunnel syndrome, so if you're having carpal tunnel
symptoms, it could be "both" -- You could have CTS on its own, or you
could have it caused by RA. (In my case, when I'm flaring I get a lot
of wrist swelling, which puts pressure on the nerves in my carpal
tunnel, causing CTS.)

I have PA and have similar symptoms. 2 months ago my right wrist
started getting into the game and when it started swelling it would
send a sharp pain from inside of wrist to palm of hand. Also my
fingers would become numb at times.
When I told my RD about this, his explanation was identical to what
Mary describes.
As a side note he switched me from tablets (MTX) to injections.
Had my first injection last friday and as of the last few days I
havn't had any numbness in my fingers. So I'm keeping my swollen
fingers crossed in the hope that the MTX is finally starting to "kick"
in.
The most important piece of advice that I have received from this NG
and other sources is that to get aggressive in your treatment regime.
Get control of your RA as soon as possible.

what Mary T said is very true about RA and CTS.  Usually the pain from CTS is
more diffuse.  The pain from RA may be more located just at the joint, but
that's not a hard and fast rule.  Chances are at least some of it is RA,
assuming your RD has been checking your joints on your visits and discussing
your pain with you.  Any even half decent RD should be able to distinguish
between the 2. Discuss it with your doctor on your next visit if you still
suspect CTS.

Do you hands wake you in the night because they hurt so bad?   That could be a
sign of carpal tunnel syndrome.

But the only way to know for sure, is to have a nerve conduction test run
(EMG).

hi becky,

i have cts.  i can't say about ra, but cts is much worse at night in bed.
i'm only guessing, but i would think ra discomfort might be more
constant/persistant throughout the day.

Usually CTS is worse at night because we tend to compress the wrist when we
sleep.  Lots of sufferers sleep in splints to keep the wrist straight at
night and that is all they need.  (Others just take the splints off in their
sleep and throw them across the room)

ROFL!  been there, done that.  Actually, I just dropped them on the floor
beside my bed, but I ttok them off without ever waking up.  My massage
therapist says she does the same thing with her bite guard!  LOL

but I learned......... and now sleeep with bite guard and bilateral
thumb/wrist splints.  Not sexy, but DH still snuggles so I guess love is
blind.

Sorry this is a month late.   I just got the newsreader running again.

I have been having pain/tenderness in my right hand for a couple of month.
To rule out CTS, my RD ran a "nerve conduction" test.  He found no nerve
impingement (his words) and believes the problem is from the A.S.

Interesting.

When I had the nerve conductivity test done, the neurologist made a note at
the bottom of the report indicating that CTS can be present without
conductivity problems 10% (I think) of the time. The Orthopedist said the
Neuro writes that when he thinks there is CTS, even when the nerves conduct
just fine.

The biggest deal with the nerve conductivity test is it will give you some
measure of what damage the CTS is causing.  That and nerve damage is often
required by the insurance companies before they will approve surgical
repair.  Of course there is that fine line between some nerve damage and
permanent nerve damage.  (Annoyed with insurance companies this week, in
spite of the fortune I've cost them over the years)

funny as mine EMG for CTS went just the other way.  He said I definitely had
CTS, but there seemed to be something else going on as well.  The surgeries
fixed me up though until I broke the one wrist and now have my neck acting
up.
