Hi!!   I have rheumatoid arthritis and osteogenesis imperfecta, a
hereditary brittle bone disorder. I was told I had RA in Oct.of 2002. My
RA doctor put me on fosamax last month. I would like to know if anybody
had any luck or side effects taking fosamax? I can not exercise like I
use to because of pain from my RA. When I do exercise to get stronger, I
get stiff and achy joints. Also I have been on Enbrel about a year.  I
do lurk in this group allot, your a fine group of people.   And I like
dark chocolate!!!     Thanks for any help...

Take Care!

Paul - I couldn't take Fosamax due to it trying to kill me on the first
dose with acid reflux from hell and since I never had that before,
didn't want to add it to my list. They then put me on Acetonel which is
basically the same as Fosamax but half the dose. That was okay until
recently when the acid reflux is slowly creeping back. I also take
Evista which is a daily medication and can be taken any time with or
without food. I sure hope it is helping some because I don't know what
the next options will be otherwise.
My husband is a dark chocolate guy and if you are careful, some of his
Father's Day stash is still in the kitchen.

Gee you guys, at least I took mine for over a year. Have now stopped the
stuff and hope to find out Wednesday when I see my PCP just what is next.
If you check both sites [Fosemax and Actonel] it is exactly the same
medication but the Actonel is half the dose of Foseamax.
If neither of you are prone to blood clots, maybe Evista would help. It
is for the same thing [although my doctor did give it to me prior to
totally menopause] and it can be taken anytime of the day with or
without food. It has never bothered my tummy.
Wonder if there are some new something -- like an injection, or infusion
[I am there anyway], or ....

Thanks for the replies everybody, I have been on Fosamax for 8 weeks,
so far I have had no stomach troubles. I also sometimes take 800 mil. of
ibuprofen twice a day, guess I am lucky  so far.  I was alittle worried
because I read one of the other side affects of Fosamax is muscle pain
and bone pain in some people.

Or if you like, I can give you my recipe for no bake choc chip cheese cake.

that's what Forteo is, and injection.  I don't know further details, but I
know that much!   Bozo RD was pushing it on me despite the fact that I'm
doing fine on Fosamax!  (repeat after me "my PCP and I are on top of it" -
said in a "back off!" voice  LOL)

Yeah, my RD and I discussed that last time. Neither of us were too keen on
giving me another daily injection, one is enough.

Diane C, maybe you and I can take the first dose of actenol together, same
time, same day....but we have to promise to actually take it, no cheating!!!

rebuild our bones with calcium and won't need the actenol!!

OK.  This is Mama Char talking.  That stuff isnt going to help either of you,
sitting in a drawer.  So TAKE THE DAMN STUFF.  I really do understand your
reluctance.  I do.  But you two are showing an amazing ability for
procrastination.  Bite the bullet and get it done.  And that is an order!

You are both big girls.  I can not make you do anything you dont want to do.
But I highly recommend that you just DO THIS and get over with.  The fear and
anticipation are probably going to be far worse than the actual deed.

You are both flirting with bones that break way too easily, and possibly
crippling yourselves unnecessarily.  So please, just take the damn stuff, OK?

Hi Paul, I've only been on Fosamax for a couple of months so can't say much.
It does bug a stomach a bit, but only a bit - I have a fairly tolerant tummy.
Part of the problem with exercsing with these illnesses is the fatigue that
is always lurking below the surface.  It doesn't take much for it to rear its
ugly head again.  I've been flaring a lot the last 6 weeks and can't come
close to exercising as much as I was in April.  It sucks, but I will get back
there again!

stick around, anyone who likes dark chocolate must be an exceptional person

My RD prefers Actonel.  Apparently she says patients experience few if any
side effects.  Even with the pain try to exercise as much as you can.  My RD
was quite emphatic about that and she said if it means taking pain meds 45
mins before you exercise then so be it. It aids in keeping the joints from
totally ceasing up and the bones will benefit as well.
