TKR class

DianaC - 28 May 2004 05:28 GMT I'm going to have a TKR on my knee on June 16th. I have Kaiser, and they have an entire system of preparation for this adventure; once you are plugged into it, you are pretty much just along for the ride.
But sometimes the ride can have some lighter moments;
I had my mandatory TKR class this morning. The first thing I noticed among all of us was that almost every single one of us was from my area...and the CLASS was being held in a facility 75 miles away from where we lived, even though there is a facility and classrooms in the town where we all live. (sigh) Long drive, during rush hour traffic in LOS ANGELES...and longer day.
So by the time we got there and met each other, we weren't in much of a mood to be entertained. VERY tough room, in other words.;-)
The nurse began the lecture by talking to us as if we were about three years old and beginning pre-school. Either that, or else she figured we were all senile; whatever her opinion, she was evidently mistaken. I can't speak for MY level of understanding (I'm only an undergraduate..) but among the 12 TKR patients there, not one was over sixty five, and I wasn't the youngest. I think we confused her a little bit. She DID start treating us like adults though, and that's all that saved her from getting beat up with our canes...
She handed out incentive spirometers for us to practice on, showed us how to give ourselves shots with the blood thinner we are all going to have to inject after we leave the hospital, and informed us that she had good news and bad news; the bad news was that we had to give up, forever, all thought of ever bunji jumping, parachuting or down hill racing...and she expected a laugh. (grin)
What she GOT was questions about when one guy could fly again, another could get back into the Nascar pit crew, and how soon a third, a woman, could get back into her film career as a porn star. ;-)
She did tell us that we could probably drive within six weeks and we could have sex immediately in any position. At this last bit of information I felt a little like the old joke, "Dr., will I be able to play the violin?" "Certainly" "Good, because I could never play it before this.."..
We shared some information about why we were all doing this...and my favorite was from the guy who asked about his pilots' license; he said that he'd had his left knee done last year, and the doctor had done such a good job on it that he needed the other one done to match; seems that he is bowlegged, and since the Doc straightened the bad one, he now has one leg longer than the other. He's here to fix that. He figures he's going to grow about an inch...(Grin)
Well...the whole thing amused my parents no end.
debbie m. - 28 May 2004 13:06 GMT Diana,
Thanks for sharing. You gave me a smile this morning. Good luck on your surgery

Nanny - 28 May 2004 13:33 GMT I'd have to take exception to your class instructor's saying sex can begin immediately in any position. Believe me, for a time after having a TKR, the last thing on your mind is sex! (or at least that was the case with me) ;-) Nanny

I bet you got a lot of kidding about that when you were a kid. :-) :-) Just kidding, just kidding. When we were kids the hormones would not let us think that way. Now,,,, those were the days. :-) OK, ok enough from me. Harv
Nanny - 30 May 2004 04:23 GMT It's late, and I'm a little fuzzy right now, Harvey, but did I miss something about "being a man?" I'm Nanny, it is true, but I'm still a woman, at least the last time I looked ;-) Maybe we're both a little confused; anyhow, I meant that was a noble statement coming from a male - you! Nanny

Caroline Marold - 29 May 2004 19:23 GMT And I would think that at least in the beginning that putting pressure on the knee with one's body weight to be a big depressant to any more thought of amour. Duckie

Nanny - 30 May 2004 04:26 GMT Let me clarify this if I can: THERE AIN'T NO WAY YER GOING TO PUT BODY WEIGHT ON A NEW TKR! Sorry for screaming LOL! Actually, at first you wonder how you are ever going to be able to raise your leg again, and how to get through the excruciating exercises. But, we do and we must :-) Nanny (TKR in 2000)

Harvey R. Stone - 28 May 2004 14:18 GMT I really enjoyed reading what you had to say and seeing how your mind works through all of this. A good sense of humor is a blessing in many ways and you have shown us a few. I have a niece that is a rehab RN and we have had a talk or two. May your doctors have their best day and your rehab be very doable. Harv

And thank you for your good wishes. This is different for me; even with my kids (all five) I've never spent more than one night in a hospital. Shoot, they even did my gall bladder removal as an outpatient procedure.
So I am nervous.
That is, I'm nervous between working on term papers and research papers and response papers and memorizing timelines and diagraming sentences...(DIAGRAMING SENTENCES? AT MY AGE??? sheesh...)
You just gotta have an occasional laugh...

I'll keep everybody posted! And thank you especially for the prayers, I can use all I can get.
In the meantime, if anybody has any to spare for stress and finals and papers and the fact that I've had to go OFF all the pain meds until surgery date? (wistfully aching)
