Hello,

I have recently had my big toe joint fused (on Feb 7th this year), after
many years of arthritis pain in that joint.  The op went OK, although there
are a few things that are still worrying me.

1. The toe has been fixed pointing slightly upwards (as expected), but also
significantly to the right, so that it overlaps my second toe.  This is
causing discomfort to the second toe, and makes it difficult to walk
"normally".

2.  Related to this, the ball of my foot and my smaller toes get quite sore
when I walk - almost as if  bruised, and I attribute this to putting too
much weight onto these parts (because my big toe is no longer taking any
weight).  Will this improve?  Is it normal?  (At the moment I'm feeling that
the arthritis pain has just stepped aside to let other pains in!

3.  My big toe is still very numb and swollen, nearly 3 months on. Will the
feeling come back and the swelling go down?

If anyone can offer advice, or point me elsewhere, I'd be really grateful.
And, especially re. point 1, if anyone who has had the op is prepared to
email me a photo, I'd be really interested.  I just get the feeling that the
toe is not set in the right position.

Thanks in anticipation,

Dave.

No experience with this, but I wonder if what feels like misalignment now
won't be fine once you get the swelling down?  Also a lot of the pain is
likely being caused by the swelling putting pressure on the nerves and on
the rest of the foot.

I'd be focusing on what will get the swelling down.

A I do know from past and current experience that it can take a long time
and a lot of work with a swollen foot.  The right amount of excercise and
enough rest and elevation and compression and ice.

Check with your own doc, but Charlie is currently taking Advil to help with
the swelling in his recently healed heel.

Dave -- did anyone answer you yet? I have saved your post just in case.
I couldn't answer you with first hand experience but I know someone has
had toe fusion done. Maybe the repost will bring some response.

Dave,
In December 2003 I had an operation on my left foot. An artrodese (fusion)
on my big toe  (hallux valgus) and a Hofmann procedure to straighten my
other toes.
On Mars 1th this year I had the same operation on my right foot. Both
operations went very well and are a great succes. I have about 250 high res
photo's on my HD. If you are interested I will send you a photo before and
after the operation of both foots. If there are other ASA peoples who are
interested , give a cry ! ! !  and I will send the pfoto's to.
