My uncle is a photographer, by profession.  When I visited him a few
weeks ago, he gave me a new Nikon, because it's "not top of the line
anymore".  Well, for me it is.  :-) He just GAVE it to me.

I've started a new gallery of just Nikon images, and invite you all to
visit.  Only a few images so far, but a few that I am proud of.

Ooh you are going to have fun with this camera.  I absolutely love the
picture you titled breakfast.  Subject, lighting and composition are
incredible.

Thanks, Jo.  That's a portrait of my BIL's father.  He's 94 years old.
Almost completely blind from macular degeneration.  But, 100% all there.
Breakfast, as all meals, are such a ritual for him.

I liked the maror, too. (Maror is Hebrew for "bitter herb", important in
the Passover ritual. The bitter "herb" in question is a horseradish
root.)

When we sat down for the seder, my BIL held up the maror (bitter herb),
saying that it was perfect.  We all, all 15 of us, looked at him like he
had two heads.  Then, of course, we burst out laughing.  He said that
when he was shopping, he chose that one because it was the perfect size
for the seder plate. He said it never occurred to him that this
resembled the male anatomical parts.  Like hell, it didn't.  LOLOL  It
was pretty funny.

The bitter herb is to remind us of the bitter times of
enslavement.
It is also very good for opening stuffed sinuses, just cut it and
inhale.

My parents used to grow their own horseradish, and grind it fresh, in
the food processor.

It's really difficult to remove the lid from the horseradish while not
looking at it, but they learned the hard way that they had to do it that
way.

I'm going to lend it to my son, but I have to figure out how to get it
to him.  I don't know if I am ready to give it away just yet.  It's a
great camera, though low on megapixels (2.1 mp).  It has a 10X optical
zoom, whereas the Nikon only has 3X, so I'm hesitant to part with it
till I get a long lens for the Nikon.  Just takes a bit of money I don't
have.

Well, don't part with it to him unless he is very appreciative. I would
love to pay you for it when you are ready to let it go. It fits my hand
so well and then John and I can stop fighting over the one we have.

I know that my son would be hugely appreciative.  So unfortunately,
don't get your hopes up too much.  There is no way he can afford a
camera, and he has been wanting one for such a long time.  Besides, if I
give my camera to my son, then my uncle will likely feel that his gift
was a double whammy.  His very Buddhist/Zen approach to life supports
the notion that giving a gift can be very far reaching, and I also
support that notion.  :-)

You and John will just have to sort out your camera issues without my
involvement.  ;-)

Great piccies!!!

Just before I left NYC, I bought myself a Nikon. It's a film camera as
the digital that I wanted would have cost too much. But I got a 24-85mm
lens along with a 75-300mm, and I love shooting photos. When I got to
Washington, I took a photography course during the summer and then
another one last fall.

Some of my photties are at http://carolemartin.com  I love photographing
things out here as it is so beautiful in Washington :)

I don't think I'll ever shoot conventional film again.  The initial
investment in digital is more, but then there's no processing costs, so
it levels out in the end.  More than levels out, cuz you can shoot and
shoot and shoot.  And, with a bit of luck, ya get a couple of good
photos.  <g>

Carole, you have a great eye.  Nice shots.

Film is better for SOME things, like REALLY big enlargements and
v-e-r-r-r-y long exposures, but for most things, digital IS much
easier.

That is what I love about it the most. When we went to China back in
1986? we took hundreds of rolls of film for the month for the two of us.
We used almost all of them. I got loads of pictures but I got three
which I love. That trip taught me to just shoot and shoot. With the
digital, you just don't have all that film to lug around and then pay
for developing later. Not only that but it was slide film and now I have
to scan all the slides into the computer to later burn to CD/DVD for
storage. Would have easier to just be there from the beginning but that
was the dark ages. lol

Also, because you can shoot and shoot and shoot, without worrying about
"ruining" a shot, you become a better photographer.  If you have an eye,
you can overcome technical abilities by learning without worrying about
costs.  I know I've become a better photographer since I went digital.
Now, if I ever decide to go back to conventional, I'm more likely to get
better results. Not that I plan on going conventional.  Just a thought.
