Plaquenil and itching

I am taking 600mg/day of Plaquenil, and 20mg of Bextra for RA.  My Dr.
increased the Plaq to 600 last month and it has done wonders with decreasing
the pain.  I have had a problem with itching since I started on the Plaq.
and it seems to have gotten worse since the dose was increased.  I've
noticed that if I itch, and I scratch, that the itching becomes very intense
lasting for 20-30 minutes.  I was out in the sun for a short time this
afternoon mowing grass and I have been itching for about 2 hrs now.  Anyone
have any suggestions to help with the itching.  I am dying to scratch but I
know it will make it so much worse.

Thanks,
Linda

Linda,

The only advice I know about would be Benadryl.  I think this is suppose to
help with itching.

Linda, my suggestion would be to contact your doctor right away and let
him/her know what is going on!   This could be a sign that you  may be
allergic to the plaquenil and maybe shouldn't continue taking it!
Please at least consider calling your doctor and finding out what their
thoughts on this are!

Thank you for the concern.  My Dr. knows that I am itching.  He says as long
as I'm not showing signs of anaphylaxis that I'm ok.  I've read that itching
can be a side effect of Plaquenil and also a sun caution, I think.  We
haven't had much sun lately and I guess I will have to see if the sun makes
it worse.  He said if the Plaq doesn't work I have to try meth.  I'm also on
Synthroid so don't know if my thyroid problems could be part of it.

I haven't felt "right" for the past 4 years, and am just starting to get
some answers to why I've been feeling so lousy.  I've got a lot to learn.

Thanks,
Linda

Linda, glad to know that your doctor is aware of the itching situation.
You could try taking an antihistamine of some sort to help with the
itching or you might contact the company that makes plauenil and see if
they have any suggestions for the itching.    Also maybe do a google to
see if others may have found a way to control the itching.   Maybe
someone here knows a more natural way of controlling the itching?

Good luck to you!!!

I am on both plaquenil AND methotrexate.  Fortunately, I didn't have the
itching.  As was already mentioned, benedryl sometimes helps.

I didn't realize you could be on both of those meds at the same time.

I did end up taking benadryl so I could get to sleep.

Thanks,
Linda

I never thought of connecting itching with Plaquenil. My right lower
leg itches a lot. I use a prescribed lotion (when I remember to put it
on).

Benadryl sounds like a fine idea.

I gotta call my doctor (I keep forgetting to call him about a possible
petit mal seizure I had Sunday night).

Good luck.
