My mom fell this evening, injuring her ankle. She passed out, which she has
done in the past in response to pain. (she passes out when other people are
hurt too, not just herself! LOL) After she came to and they got her in the
car, she had what my dad described as a siezure. Eyes rolled back, tongue out,
face twisted, body twitching, etc. Lasted 10-15 seconds. He started to drive
her to the hospital when she came to and she threw a fit (she's a bit
stubborn!). So he brought her home and my sister and I got to be the meanies
(we don't care!) and made her go to the hospital.
Ankle was not broke, but a severe sprain, said that a break would probably have
been less painful. They said the seizure was caused by a vagal response to the
pain. I have seen people pass out as a vagal response, but not have a seizure.
Has anyone else seen this? Curious.

YIKES, KJ, that sounds really scary!
I have heard of the passing out from pain before and have witnessed
people doing it, but have not heard of having a seizure from pain. On
the other hand, I do know someone who had to have some type of out
patient surgery done and got themselves worked so into a tizzy of fear
about it that they had a seizure. The doctors said the seizure was
purely brought on by this fella's stress.
Glad to hear you mom didn't break any bones, and glad she had you and
your sister there to get her to the hospital. Praying that she heals
quickly and that there will be no more problems with seizures!

KJ,
Your mom is in my thoughts and prayers. I am sorry she has to be going thru
this. I never heard of anyone having seizures from pain. I would check into
that one.
I hope her ankle heals quickly.
You are in my thoughts too.

KJ - I've got to agree with the other's and say I've never heard of having a
seizure from too much pain. But hey - the brain is a strange and mysterious
place. Did they do a CT of your Mom's brain at the hospital? Every time my
Mom falls, that's the first thing they do to make sure there isn't any
bleeding in her brain. I think I would be worried that she hit her head in
the fall.
If she has to wear an ankle brace, I recommend the Active Ankle.
http://www.activeankle.com/store/products.html (I swear as much as I refer
folks to them they should be paying me a commission! LOL) After 3 sprains in
6 months, it's what got me back on my feet. I see that the bubble type pads
are now only available for a trainer so you might have to do some finagling
there. My doctor gave me mine brace for $85 but if you go thru the website
it's only $35. but for a new sprain you really need the "BubbleFlex
Cushioning System" Let me know if you want more info on it. I used it for a
long time after my sprain healed when I had to do a lot of walking and was
still strengthening the ankle. It came with a book with simple at home
ankles to help build it back up. They actually have a really good section on
the website about injury care. That's new! Sometime sprains can take longer
to heal than a break! Hope she's improving fast.
Cyberhugs,

No CT, she didn't hit her head. She was walking out of a resturant with my dad
and didn't see a small step.

Thanks! She has the lace up one from the hospital and she probably won't wear
it as long as she should. But if she needs it, I'll look into that one.

Well, that is good. Seizures are a mis-cue of electrical firing. How is
that for really, really simplified info. Maybe the adrenaline from the
fall set her off. My very first neurologist says it is a mighty tiny
hole for a baby to pass through. He says that loads of people are
walking around with tiny brain scarring which may never show itself. My
husband actually had one seizure which involved his eyes rolling back
but no shaking or other signs. Because I was way too familiar, I knew
what was happening. I was in his face trying to be sure he was breathing
when he came to -- talk about angry. And then me insisting he get on the
floor while I called the doctor. I didn't want him to have another and
fall to the ground while my back was turned. His doctor sent him along
to a neuro and then the neuro ordered a EEG [brain scan] and also saying
to John that he basically thought I was crazy and that I miss read a
simple passing out. hehehe
Guess what they found. Tiny scarring which probably occurred from a fall
he took as a six year while riding a tri-cycle. He was overly tired and
hungry when his one and only seizure happened. He has never had another.
So here is hoping that your mother also sees no other manifestation.

Tina,,,,hope your Mom gets healed up fast. Having a epsoide like that
isn't anything I've seen in 32 yrs of nursing...but there is always an
exception to every rule!!!! I think that your Mom and mine are
related...that women can be a big flustration at times. But, we are all
a family of "warriior women"! Prayers and good healing vibs flying your
Mom's way...Mic
Always, be, and stay AWARE!

Did she hit her head when she fell? I would still be thinking a neuro
visit was not out of the line but maybe if what the ER man said was
actually confirmed by her PCP, then okay, leave her alone. The fact
that ER doctors are not all created equally and it is Easter weekend
which leave the short end of the straw in charge....
I have seen seizures in response to high fever, heard of them in
response to stroke, heard of seizures from accidents like motor cycles
or cars or horse falls, and have personal knowledge of trauma at birth
but not heard of a vagal response. Have you done a computer surf yet?
BTW, anger after a seizure is not uncommon. The person being hovered
over has no idea that they have been 'missing' for those 15 seconds.
