JoeBlow - 24 Mar 2004 20:42 GMT As usual, I'm a new one in the group, and am going on 15 years of RA. I saw a new Rheummy last week, and he wants me to get off Predesone and anti-inflammatories, and just take MTX. His nurse called about my blood test results and it appears that my creatine level is a little high, so I was ordered off the anti-inflammatories immediately. It's killing me to do that, and don't understand why I should stop it and use just pain pills. Does anyone have an opinion?

Please understand that if you are at 10mg that it has to be very slowly done with Pred. More information is needed before good answers or questions for your RD can be given. Harv
Caroline Marold - 25 Mar 2004 06:27 GMT Getting off pred is my goal -- sometime during my lifetime... It is VERY hard to do and you will need 5mg and 1 mg tabs to be able to accomplish the feat. If you new RD does not understand this, then you should find another one. Need to know how much MTX you are on, for how long at that dose, how much pain you are still in even with the MTX which requires that you take your anti-inflammatory. A good working DMARD [note: working is the operative word] means no NSAID should be needed. That is the goal. But to tell you, when you are obviously still in pain to get off both pred and the NSAID doesn't sound right to me. But remember, I am not a doctor. Also, I would certainly not give them both up at the same time. One of the troubles with pred withdrawal is mock fibro pain. That is why it is so hard to give up. Give us some more information and we might be able to give more help. Duckie

>accomplish the feat.< Duckie is absolutelu right on this. Getting off the stuff is a b**ch. I did it on an accelerated schedule so I could have my hand surgery and it was far from being pleasant. I went down a mg every 3 weeks, rather than the 1 mg. a month which is generally recommended. You absolutely cannot just stop taking it cold turkey. If your Dr.'s nurse told you to cold turkey it, I would get an immediate appt. with him and makre totally sure that's what he said.

My PCP is still upset many years after he lost a patient unnecessarily. The man had been taking a "supplement" he bought in Mexico, and was too embarrassed or whatever to tell the staff when he was admitted to the hospital. The supplement was mostly prednisone, and the sudden lack of it in his system caused him to crash and die after surgery. By the time they found out what was going on it was too late.

It may be what we are talking about with medicines coming out of Mexico, Canada, and the USA ON LINE. The actual medicine coming out of the far east with different contents or not exactly clean conditions of packing. I think I can safely say that all of us a POed about the cost of prescriptions and the wolf awaits to take advantage of people doing the best they can to just make ends meet. What was that old saying,,,,, let the buyer beware.

Newsgroup Spambuster - 28 Mar 2004 05:15 GMT Jo,
Your example is a prime reason all 6 of us kids used to get after my mom and dad when they would go to texas for the winter months. They were so close to the mexican border, and would go over to mexico quite often. They also started buying different antibiotics and other things over there that you could get in mexico without a prescription that needed a prescription in the u.s. We use to worry so that they would end up harming themselves more than anything else by playing doctor with themselves and each other. Scary stuff!

I have never been on NASAIDS, when diagnose I got predisolon, MTX and later on cyclosporine (Neorall) to keep things calm. I've tried to reduce the predisolone and got down from 10 mg to 5mg and 3,75 mg on alternate days, lower than that I'm in trouble.

Aina Nilsen - 08 Apr 2004 13:52 GMT I'm not too bad. The first months of the year are the hardest work wise and combined with a cold virus that seemed to go back and forth between me and my husband, I was slowly getting pretty low. The RA kept traveling from joint to joint and I was tired all the time. But right now I have 10 days off for Easter and I'm just relaxing and doing as little as possible, LOL, so I slowly feel better. We had planned to redecorate the bedroom, even got the paint, but so far we have not started. Oh, well, it has been like that for quite some time, so what is another day or two..
I hope you are doing ok as well?

> Hey Aina -- long time no see. How are you doing? > Duckie Caroline Marold - 09 Apr 2004 05:01 GMT Nothing like that NOT working to relax a person. :) I painted our upstairs bathroom just before Christmas. First had to take off the wallpaper and that took me several weeks as I only worked about an hour at a time. It feels so good to make the change and the old paper was from 20 years ago. Can you say dated? Enjoy the rest of your holiday. Oh, and I am doing pretty well. :) Thank you Remicade. Duckie

Aina Nilsen - 09 Apr 2004 14:01 GMT LOL, I'm getting quite good at doing nothing here. The worst part with the bedroom is that we want to replace the big stand wardrobe in there as well, so I have to take out all of my clothing and pack it in suitcases etc. As you can guess, I have a bit more than two t-shirts and a pair of pants, so I think that alone is more than a days worth of work.. But I still have a few days off from work, so who knows how far we gets.
I'm glad to hear that the Remicade is working well for you!

Sorry to hear about the virus and that you are having a hard time working.
It is good that you have off for Easter. I hope you can recoop.
I hope things get better for you.
I hope that you and hubby get rid of the cold/virus and stop passing it back and forth. That can be very frustrating.
Signature Love and hugs to all Good thoughts coming your way too.

And compared to some of the trouble other people in here have been seeing, it is nothing at all.
