Linda Tribout - 16 Jan 2004 10:56 GMT Hi everyone. I have been having problems with neuropathy (woke up from burning pain in leg tonight). Neuropathy can cause pain, tingling and numbness. I swing between numbness and burning pain. I am trying to figure out what caused it. Has anyone had this problem while on anti-TNF inhibitors? It can also be caused by Vitamin B-12 deficiency or simply as another autoimmune disease (my doctor's diagnosis}.
Since I've had RA for 35 years and this hasn't happened before, I can't help but think it might be related to Enbrel/Humira. I'm also leaning toward B-12 deficiency since I haven't been getting my B-12 shots as regularly since my most recent compression fracture.
I would appreciate hearing from others who have experienced this problem.
Thanks,
Linda
Char - 16 Jan 2004 14:58 GMT > I have been having problems with neuropathy Linda-In my family, we have something called familial neuropathy. I dont have it, but my brother does.
So there are more causes than the ones you listed. And they may never be able to pinpoint it.
Good luck. Char

I only came up with those three in my 3 AM research, but I was googling "Neuropathy + possibilities I could think of". I don't know anyone in my family who has had this problem, don't know of anyone having RA either, but it could be a generation or two away. Don't you think I should probably see a neurologist to find the cause instead of taking my RD's diagnosis for granted?
I hope you're doing okay thee days.
Linda
Char - 16 Jan 2004 23:59 GMT > Don't you think I should >probably see a neurologist to find the cause instead of taking my RD's >diagnosis for granted? If that is what it is going to take, to make you feel OK about this, then by all means see a Neurologist.
It is all about you being satified with your medical care. Char

Antifungal medication did not help so I asked a doctor friend, and he said it was an allergic reaction and prescribed large, but decreasing, doses of prednisone which cleared it up. I spent a week of unbearable itching all over my stomach because of the misdiagnosis. He is supposed to be a good RD, so I guess he should be better able to diagnose an autoimmune disease than a skin rash. I think I need a neurologist anyway because ever since my fourth compression fracture 4 months ago, I have sciatica so bad I can't walk more than 50 feet. I hope a neurologist can do something. Prednisone for RA caused my osteoporosis. Thank heavens I am now taking Forteo (parathyroid hormone), which builds bone back to the normal level for most people (per my doctor).
I'm sorry to be venting but I've had a bad the couple of years, and I've been feeling discouraged. On Monday morning, I woke up in so much pain I felt like shooting myself, but called my doctor and asked for Humira, and I'm feeling better after the first shot two days ago.
Thanks for listening .

Its funny you say that. Me and my brother have arthritis; I have sought treatment, my brother has not. Although my arthritis is better, I now have so much more medical problems than before. My brother does not have any other additional health problems. I can't help but wonder if my additional health problems were a result of my arthritis treatment.

You might want to research your medications or ask your pharmacist for complete information on them to see if you are having side effects. What are you taking for arthritis? Immunosuppressants, of course, can cause more infections, among other things. If you think your medications are causing other problems, you should talk to your doctor about it.

Char - 17 Jan 2004 06:37 GMT > I can't help but wonder if my additional health >problems were a result of my arthritis treatment. You and your brother have arthritis, doesnt begin to cover it. Do you have the same form of arthritis? There are over 170 different diseases and conditions that fall under that general heading.
Treatments that are available to treat inflammatory arthritis CAN cause additional health problems, but that is why we are monitored so closely. To stop them before they really get started.
But very often people with one autoimmune disease have others as well.
I dont think your additional health problems can be blamed on being treated for arthritis, but that is only my opinion. But an educated opinion. Char

I had a diabetes test done a few weeks ago and was told I don't have that. I did read last night that diabetes could cause neuropathy, but discarded that possibility because of recent tests. I'm not really sure the doctor was right, of course. I don't know why I can't take what they say as positively right. I guess because I don't think doctors are infallible. and my RD came up with autoimmune neuropathy without any type of testing.
Thanks for answering my post. I hope you are doing well thes days.

Pinched nerves,,,swelling pressure,,,,MS and others. Neuropathy can cause muscles to waste. None of this can go on and on without a price. Please see your doctor and get good answers to stop the worry.

I just turned 30 this month. I have RA, Neuropathy, Chronic Daily Migraines, Cysts 1 on each ovary every month that about kill me, Fibromyalgia, and Myofascial pain. I have had the RA, since I was 12 yrs. old, only it never got found out about till, the end of last year. My Neurologist has me seeing a PT person, him, he is setting an app. up to see a RA doctor, and I'm seeing a Gyn. They are having trouble trying to treat me. I'm very sensitive to medications. I'm on 1800 mgs of Neurontin a day, which the only thing thats doing is helping my mood. I'm on Bextra, 20 mgs. a daay {which we cant afford} Medicade doesn't want to approve it. I take Phenerghan for my nausea. Clonazapam 0.5 mgs. at night for depression {is not helping}. Am being given Lortab for pain {ha } is not helping my pain, my pain is so intense so like up in the hundreds. Am afraid to ask for anything stronger. It's just I'm tired of hurting so bad. I have 3 children the oldest will turn 13 this August, the middle chils is 9 will turn 10 in July, and my youngest just turned 8 a couple of days b4 Christmas. Hi Linda, Please continue to read and post here where you will find several people that that dealt with everything you have listed. Continue to see you doctors making sure that they all know what the other is doing and what you are taking. With a working husband and children just keeping going and doing to keep their lives together is a big job and they may not understand what you are dealing with. Please try to stay positive and doing what you can do for yourself and talking about it here.

I am only 30 , and have RA {since the age of 12] only it did not get found out about, untill the very end o last year. I don't really do good with a vitamin intake. Could have a little to do with it. What is anti-TFN ? I'm not on any Embrel. I had the problems/ symptoms b4 even being put on anything for the RA. But I was already put on the Neurontin b4 I had the Neuropathy issue arise. I was wondering if Enbrel (Anti-tumor-necrosis factor) could have played a part in my Neuropathy since I had read it could cause demyelination of nerves as a side effect. I didn't have Neuropathy before taking it. I guess it was just a coincidence, though, since so many people have the Autoimmune Neuropathy along with the RA. Enbrel is one of the newer Disease Modifying Drugs.
I'm sorry to hear you are having so many problems. I'm glad you will be seeing an RD to get some help. It is hard to raise a family when you have RA. My children were 3 and 1 when I was diagnosed. Hopefully, a rheumatologist will be able to get your symptoms under control. There are many good treatments for RA now. Good Luck!

>Hi MM, > [quoted text clipped - 44 lines] >> > >> >Linda Julieg0826 - 27 Nov 2006 05:09 GMT Hi Linda,
I can't believe that I found you... I have had neuopathy symptoms (tingling and numbness plus cold hand and feet for the past 3 months. I have had RA for 15 yrs and have been on Embrel then Remacade (stopped do to cost and insurance) then back to Embrel which worked for 3 more yrs then 4 months ago it stopped working and I was switched to Humira 2 months ago (no relief).
I also had a 3 amalgam fillings replaced right before my symptoms appeared. I asked my Dr. and dentist about the possibility of toxic metal poisoning, from the mercury in the fillings, causing these symptoms too and he basically poo-poo'd me.
I hate to hear that you too are having these symptoms but at least I am not crazy for thinking that it may be the meds too.
I am going back to my doctor Tues and will insist on a test for heavy metal toxins. Heavy metals can cause neurologial symptoms too. I've gone off the TNF meds and am on Prednizone for now to control swelling.
If I find out someting I will be sure to let you know. In the mean time, I feel your pain.
Julie
