Local Man Angry Over Gravesite Resale (and Obama)
18:40 PDT Tuesday, July 28, 2009
San Diego KGTV-10-ABC
SAN DIEGO -- Cemeteries in the U.S. could soon face federal oversight
following the discovery of bodies dug up in a suburban Chicago graveyard.
Hundreds of bodies were taken out of their graves at the Burr Oak Cemetery
and then re-buried in mass graves, all so the gravesites could be re-sold.
A congressional panel began looking into new regulations Tuesday.
That news is of little comfort to San Diegan Karl Steiner.
Steiner was a boy of 12 when he saw his beloved aunt Annie buried at Burr Oak.
"She was my world and when she died, I can still feel the agony, the deep
hurt, the agony inside that I felt then, I can still feel today," Steiner
told 10News. "For her body to be ripped up, torn apart and disassembled, to
be exposed to the weather, to the animals to feed on, to be rolled over by
the wheels of backhoes and trucks, it makes me sick."
Steiner first heard the news a few weeks ago, but for the last several
years, he's had his suspicions that something wasn't right at Burr Oak.
He visited his aunt's grave in 2005 and to his shock he said he discovered
there was no gravestone and very little grass covering the area where her
grave was supposed to be.
Steiner bought a headstone and complained to the cemetery, which assured
him everything was OK.
But he remained deeply suspicious.
Then he heard the news this month that confirmed his worst fears. For the
four cemetery workers charged in the case, Steiner has nothing but disgust
and contempt. "They're nothing but bile belched up from the depths of hell
to walk among us," he said.
*************************************************
But not all of Steiner's anger is reserved for the cemetery workers. He's
also upset with President Barack Obama, a former senator from Illinois, for
not stepping in and helping the investigation along.
Steiner said, "He has not spoken up for us, he has not advocated anything
insofar as appropriate justice, the ultimate justice for the ultimate
crimes that they committed."
Steiner said the black community helped Obama get elected and now he is
deserting them when they need him most. He also said the 30 years in prison
that the four defendants could face is not nearly enough.

This situation is an atrocity, Chief! When bodies are handled in this
manner with no respect whatsoever of the dead, we have gone beyond the
sensitivity for those who have passed on. Some things should remain
sacred, and this is one example of blatant insanity. Nanny
