Steam mops?

This is kind of off topic and kind of on topic!

Am wondering if any of you have used any of the steam mops that are out
on the market for cleaning your floors?   Seems like they would be a
good thing with no chemicals to bother my lungs and would make cleaning
floors perhaps easier and quicker without having to kill my hands
wringing our something or scrubbing really hard, etc.

Any of you out there tried any of these or had any experience with them
at all?

You thoughts?

Funny, I just posted this on my quilting newsgroup!  The shampooer machine
is rather large and heavy, but it pushes around very easily and the water
container has a bucket-type handle and isn't too heavy even when full- it's
easy to carry to the sink to empty the dirty water and refill with clean.
But it's not steam- just very hot water and a passel of rotating scrub
brushes.

I found my carpet shampooer does a wonderful job on my vinyl floors-  it
heats the water and the scrub brushes get down into the little 'dimples' in
the vinyl where the dirty water used to pool up when using a standard mop.
And the suction action of the shampooer slurps the floors almost dry as a
bonus.  I'm really happy I accidentally ran off the carpet and onto the
vinyl and discovered this!  It's a Bissell Pro-Heat 2X and I highly
recommend it!  I paid $170 at Wal-Mart- the price of having my carpets
professionally cleaned 1.5 times.  VBG  (And the brushes dig out all the dog
hair that's worked it's way down into the nap of the carpet- another bonus.)

I'd love to hear as well.  Charlie keeps recording the commercial for
me.  I'm not impressed but could be by someone who has actually used
one.

I do have a floor cleaner that is similar to a 'steam' carpet cleaner.
Hot water and cleaner in one compartment and dirty water sucked up off
the floor in another.

Does a really good job but an awful lot of work anyway.

I would like to hear more about this too.  I have a very old (25 years
or more) Hoover rug and floor cleaner but it's a nuisance to use.  It
doesn't suck up the dirty water so I have to use a mop along with it and
I don't think it gets the floor clean at all.  I'm just not able to keep
my kitchen floor looking nice without scrubbing it.

I have one, Donna, as I can't use chemicals around Dundee. I have a
Shark. It works great and after I clean, I just throw the pad into the
washing machine, so it's a lot more green than the other types of mops
where you have to keep buying the pads.

Carole,

Oh perfect, Carole, this is just the kind of information I am looking
for!

Is it as easy to use as it looks and are you pretty happy with the way
it cleans?

Is it easily emptied out if there is water left in the reservoir when
you are done?

Yes, I am. It's much better than using a swifter or one of those.

I don't empty it. I leave it in there as I tend to use it every few
days. I have off white floors so they get dirty quickly :( But I think
it would be easy enough to empty if I wanted to...or just put a little
water in, don't fill it.

Carole, another question....
How long does the pad last?  Can you easily find replacement pads for
when it wears out?
I'm really interested in this Shark machine,
Thanks,
Ann

You can order pads from the Shark website. I still have the two original
ones. Just wash em and reuse em :)  Not sure how long they last, but
I've had my Shark for over a year now. I got it just after I got Dundee
as I was told not to use chemicals around him (their lungs are very
sensitive :) I really love my Shark.

Honestly, I wasn't even familiar with these.  The discussion got me wondering
about them though, especially as we have this essentially unheated breezeway
that needs mopping several times each winter, whcih i always put off as long
as possible.  (I have to let the room warm up some by leaving the door into
the house open for a while, or the water will just freeze when it hits the
ceramic tile floor!  How much easier a steam mop would be!)

Anyway, if you haven't done so, you might want to read through the reviews of
the various steam mops on Amazon.com   There's some good info in both the
good & bad reviews, as well as some comparisons between different ones.

Hi Donna  I was wondering about these mops also.  I am finding it more
difficult to scrub my floors with the old fashioned mop.
Thanks for bringing up the topic.

I also did like Nann suggested and went to amazon.com and typed in steam
mops and read the reviews on all the different types of steam mops.
This was extremely helpful as there was some good points brought up in
the reviews that were most helpful!
