Adelle - 22 Jul 2008 15:59 GMT Hi!
After the spate of lousy news, its nice to see good news from Kelly and Rhonda. The right medication is so important. And a doc who is both competent and 'gets it' is a gem. Wishing this good mojo spreads to encompass those who need the weavers to change their pattern for the happier/easier/healthier.
And in the vein of good news - the enbrel is really working for me. Last year when we took our kids to the water park, it was a struggle for me to just walk around the place so I could see the kids come down the slides. This year I helped chaperone a trip there with the day camp the karate studio owns; walking around was simply a non-issue. A slight rise you couldn't even call a hill was overwhelming last year and this year was no problem at all. I even swam with the kids in the wave pool, towing them out on a tube so they could float on the highest waves (though I flared the next day and slept a lot). Doing a real happy dance instead of a shuffle. Hoping you all have days like this, too.

Kelly - 22 Jul 2008 16:54 GMT Thank goodness Adelle - amazing how you figure you are not doing "too bad" and then when almost normal (even for a short time) comes how great it feels. There have been times I would be happy with a shuffle but a happy dance feels incredible.
So glad to hear about your happy dance - and remember most "normal" people would be flaring and tired the next day after being in a wave pool pulling a tube against the water. (By the way who are those so called "normal" people - sure isn't my slightly out of shape husband or my in shape sister who then hits a different muscle group. So who is that "normal"? Who are we trying to be like?)

I really loved hearing about your good day. It sounds like it was well worth the off day that followed. A price we'd each be glad to pay.
Here's to good days, whatever that may mean to each of us.

Good news all around. Enbrel has given me my life back, and continues to do so. I've been on it since about 2001. With all these new drugs coming out, my doc wants me to stay on the Enbrel because it's working so well, even though I get lousy injection site itching. I sure hope it's as good a drug for you as it's been for me. Adelle, sounds like you're on a good road.

Adelle - 23 Jul 2008 04:34 GMT >> Hi! >> [quoted text clipped - 27 lines] > as > it's been for me. Adelle, sounds like you're on a good road. Di, so glad Enbrel is working for you, too. As a friend said about a different health issue - she didn't know how bad she'd felt until she felt better.
I was getting pretty intense itching and large welt at the injection site, too. The one time I tried my upper arm, the welt went from underarm to elbow and went three quarter's around. He gave me a Medrol pack that time, but I frankly didn't want to deal with the weight issue (the dieting was finally working) so while I filled it, it's sitting in the medicine cabinet 'just in case.'
The doc's infusion nurse suggested I take Benedryl at least a half hour before taking the injection (I take 50mg and wait as long as I can without being too sleepy to actually do the shot right). The doc said to try doing the injections every 8 to nine days to see if that helped and still covered my symptoms. Benadryl plus a 9 day schedule has done the trick. This last time the welt was only (!!!!) about 3 inches by 4 inches and went away after three days (instead of ten). I should buy stock in Kirkland though cause I'm going through a lot of cortisone cream.

I never thought about it, and my doc never suggested it. I am also going through lots of cortisone cream. These welts are a trip. I still take the 2X/week Enbrel that I have to mix up. I'm scared of the prefilled syringes of once a week Enbrel, given my horrificly painful Kineret experience. My doc, the nurses, and I all pretty much suspect that it was the preservative in the prefilled syringes, and I'm not going to go that route again. So, I inject twice a week, alternating the sides of my belly. No sooner does the one welt finally subside when I create a huge welt on the other side. This is not fun.
Also not fun is the pain in my left knee, left ankle and left wrist right now. It's 2am and I cannot sleep. I just took some hydrocodone, and I'm hoping that kicks in soon. If nothing else, it will make me drowsy so I can sleep through the pain. My knee is getting injected in a week with hyalgen. I dunno what the hell is going on with my ankle. It's swollen and aching like crazy. My wrist is just a nasty bout of tendonitis, which is part and parcel with my spondy. If it's not one joint with tendonitis, then it's another one. But, most bothersome right now is my ankle. This really hurts.
And, my belly itches.......

I wonder if since your knee is giving you grief and perhaps throwing off your gate a bit that that might be effecting your ankle?
Hope the pain meds kick in for you quickly and that you can get some decent rest!

Di - 24 Jul 2008 14:29 GMT > {{{{{{{{{{ Di }}}}}}}}}}}}} > [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] > Hope the pain meds kick in for you quickly and that you can get some > decent rest! Thanks, Donna. I'm sure my knee is throwing me somewhat off balance. But, my ankle is the same one I broke when I was 16, and which has given me grief ever since. In fact, my ortho told me that the fibula, which I broke then, never healed properly. The broken ends overlap, rather than having healed end to end. But, it's my fibula, which isn't a weighbearing bone, so fixing it now, after over 40 years, is not worth it. The ortho said that if broken today, they'd never have let a bone heal that way; that it should have been pinned. That was then. This is now.
After my post, I got so sick. Really sick. Throwing up, fever sick. I should have known. Whenever I get a fever, the first to really give me a clue is my ankle. It aches first, then the rest of my joints ache. But, this was different. It ached way more than usual. It was aweful. It's good now. And, so am I.
I spent yesterday sick as a dog. Throwing up, fever, sleeping, shivering, chills, sweating..... you know. Today, I'm mostly better. Still feel a bit shakey, and told my secretary that I'd be in the office around 10:00 a.m. It's 9:30 now, and I still have to jump into the shower. But, I'm still drinking coffee and steadying myself for the day. Sheesh............ I got hammered.

But, I'm still drinking > coffee and steadying myself for the day. Sheesh............ I got hammered. I wonder if something is going around the country. We were out of town for Monday & Tuesday as Mike had a meeting downstate & I tagged along to do some shopping. Tuesday morn I felt fine, tummy started that "maybe too much coffee" feeling about 90 minutes later. I won't take you through the icky details, but by noon I was getting quite sick in the family bathroom at Sam's Club. Fortunately, by then Mike's meeting wasn't happening for him and he was driving me. (later found out the meeting had ben moved, but the message didn't get to him as, for some unknown reason, they sent word to the wrong email address.) I had all the stuff you mention - I wasn't even sure I could *ride* home. If I'd been alone, I would have had to stay downstate at least one more night, maybe 2. Today is the first time I've even been up to typing on the computer!
I'm still trying to decide if I can make it to the wedding we have on for this afternoon. Mike's the priest, so he'll have to be there early and stay late. With only one vehicle right now, I'd have to go with him. I just don't know if I can do that much yet. *Sitting* through a play last night absolutely wiped me out. Luckily, it was a comedy and very well done! Socializing with folks may still be beyond me.
Anyway, i hope you survived work and are recovering from your bug faster than I seem to be!

I hate > going to the doctor feeling lousy and having him/her tell me that it's a bug > that's going around. Go home and lots of liquids. Yuck. I'm improving daily, but still get tired much too fast. Last Saturday, we were at a concert over at Interlochen with some friends for their daughter's final concert of the Arts Camp she'd been in. (great concert, BTW) The mom, brother, & the tuba-playing daughter all had this same crud last week, according to what Mike heard at the wedding. Now we figure we all picked it up there and it had a bit of an incubation period. I prefer that to it being one of the stomcah upsets I've been so prone to lately, though it's infuriating to have the recovery be so slow. I'm glad I'm not doing it all with an ill teenager and 20-something in the house as well, though!
I surely hope Di had something milder - she has to worry about getting in to work!

I'm OK. I was fine after a day and a half. But, that first day was a drag. As for getting into work, I didn't make it. My boss wasn't happy, but he can go pound sand, for all I care. I think it was just a passing bug that is passing itself around the country at break neck speed. Or, shall I say, break belly speed? Blechhhhhh...........

loujeanb - 28 Jul 2008 14:05 GMT Now that brings back some memories. I stayed at Interlochen one summer for a week with the orchestra from Ann Arbor High School (I played second violin). It was beautiful there. I had a good view of the lake from my room, but I can't remember if it faced East or West. Of course, that was a few years back (1954 or '55!)

How true, how true. that's the one down side of the all-too-rare, really good day - you realize how lousy you feel on the other days. I start wondering if I've become a whiner, then one of those days comes along and it feels like someone flipped a switch in my body. It's discouraging to realize I really do feel bad, but such a relief to know I'm not just whining! lol

I'd have to agree with your doc, Di, even though the itching must be miserable. As my DH would say, "better the divil you know" and in this case you know it DOES work and your side effects aren't even more profound than the itching. Still, I'll toss out a few good thoughts for greater relief on that point!
