Well, I don't need to be asked regarding prayers for fire control and
for firefighters.

Our biggest smoke producer may be contained by August 31.  Note, that
doesn't mean out.  Just that it is confined to a specific area.

Housing around here isn't as high as the rest of the state.  But I
don't think you'd be interested.  We will be in smoke until it rains.

Lots of prayers on the way for the housing situation.  I can only
imagine that the usual nightmare rental market in your area is a
thousand times worse than usual right now.

If you need to travel across country for a place to stay, you've always got one
at my house.  It's a tiny apartment that I share with two cats, but for you,
girl, my door is open.

I'm pulling for you, M.  You don't deserve this.  That apartment karma is just
trying to catch up with you, I'm sure.

Well Johnie is an asset (definitely Arizona though-he lives in Oracle
right outside of Tuscon) but it is more than that....I love open
spaces and spectacular beauty.  I love living in a place where I own
the night sky-oh I forgot-the coyotes and i own the night sky!  I love
walking out my door in the morning and knowing that the land I will
soon be seeing is not subtle.  It just insists in a way know only to
toddlers and red rock mountains that I look at IT.  I love the fact
that the desert smells of sage and rain and that every single cycle is
in my face-sunset, sunrise, lunar waxing and waining, solstices and
equinoxes. I never for one minute forget the Mother and Father-the
earth and the sky.  I love paying tribute to the earth-there is such a
mutual respect that comes when your land can take your life during the
summer months if you do not pay attention and I always pay
attention....I love watching the lightening come streaking across the
sky for miles and miles and then watching the clouds open up and just
pour...I love that in two hours it will be sunny again....mostly I
love night, something central coast Californians know nothing about.
It is cold for us at night-the rare night when it is warm is just
stunning....I love counting shooting stars....I love the drama that
can only come in the desert.  I love that I not only write poetry in
the desert but I almost speak poetry.  I love that the spirits of the
old ones still live there.   It is a photographer's dream, a writer's
muse and a dreamer's song....

I sure can see you going nuts in a city.  And, I know exactly what you mean.
For me, it's the ocean.  I love the sound of the waves, the smell of the sea,
the shorebirds feeding their young and fighting for juxtaposition as the waves
come in.  I love the white sand with the purple garnet patches that feel like
talc between your toes.  I love the beach peas, beach grass, beach heather, the
hollies and pines.  I love the singing song birds, and the chattering
woodpeckers.

I've never spent any time in a desert, be it high or low, but I have visited
some desert environments for short times.  Albuquerque has an almost foreign
feel to my eastern blood.  It's rocky, dry and subltly beautiful.  I spent a
few hours in Petroglyphs National Monument, climbed to the top of the steep
trail, and looked around at a gorgeous view.  The top was a sacred place for
the Native Americans, and I could see why.  I took images, but found it
impossible to capture that beauty.  It was boldy graphic and stunning there,
but also very subtle and small.  Some don't know if the rocks are truly sacred
works, or instead merely ancient grafitti.  Either way, they depict a culture
long gone, and thet saddened me somewhat.  Where did they go?  Why?  Did
Europeans drive them off?

Same for the Grand Canyon and its surroundings.  There was a great culture
there, and now it's totally gone, having left mere traces and cryptic messages
of its presence.  The west is an acient place.  The east is more green, more
ocean, more ephemeral.  The ocean has only stories, some wrecked ships that
poke out of the sand at times, but nothing of a native culture.  I think the
native Americans knew to keep their main dwellings off a barrier island.

Barrier islands come and go.  It's only since the arrogant white settlers with
lots of money and the desire to kill every whale that passed by decided to
settle and make this place "permanent".  Now, we fight a political battle
trying to maintain a naturally shifting shoreline while houses and their
inhabitants fight to stabilize, and in my opinion, ruin what was once so
beautiful about his place.  Sure, the communities are fun.  But, it's a very
selfish, very self serving, very arrogant, and very uneducated fun.  But, with
big money burning holes in your pockets, you can afford to be arrogant and
selfish.  I cannot.  I'm just a government hump, a working stiff, trying to
maintain some kind of balance between these competing interestes, Man and
Nature.  I've been doing it my entire career, the last 18 years iwth the park
service, and it's wearing me down to a nub.

Geez, Melinda, you really got me started.  Just know that if you're ever out
this way, and if you ever need a place to stay, my door is always open to you.
Always.  As for Johnie, now that you mention Tuscon, I remember that he'd said
that.  For some reason, I was thinking Taos.  I sure wish he'd pop into ASA for
a visit.  Wouldn't that be something?

Oh, boy, don't get me started!  I grew up in Florida back in the days when
the only thing youbuilt on the barrier islands were what I call "Florida
Funky" style places.  You KNEW they'd be blown away by a hurricane one day,
so you didn't invest too much.  You just wanted a place to sleep without the
bugs getting in - and maybe the ability to close it off on cool nights.  Now
I hear people whining about not being able to insure multi-million dollar
places that they never should have been allowed to build in that location.
And all those trailer parks full of retirees on the coast who didn't think
about hurricanes when they bought - and now can't get insurance because of
that.  At the least FULL disclosure of the risks should hvae been required.
But I'd best step off the soap box before I wear out my already aching
fingers!  lol

Full disclosure is a concept that is heartily fought off by real estate agents
and sellers.  There's money to be made in duping people.  But, the taxpayer
ends up with the tab.  Sucks........

Ain't it the truth?  Let the real estate folks make their buck, then take it
away from everyone to pay for the inevitable damages.  And now folks with
modest homes inland are paying incredible insurance rates because of the high
risk places right on the coast.

In my perversity, I was really irked at Hurricane Andrew for hitting the
lower income, more modestly housed Homestead, FL instead of whallopping the
foolishly built Miami Beach.  And the Gulf Coast suffering from Katrina is a
subject I'd best leave alone.

ah, you have an appreciation for the desert I've never learned.  I'm a
mountain & forest girl myself.  Fortunately, I married a mountain & forest
guy.  I understand the peace you find in the dessert as that is what we find
in the out in the mountains, especially mildly isolated camping in our tent.
(I still like flush toilets & access to showers, but not RVs all over the
place!)  Even photos bring some of that peace home to me - that's probably
why I've belonged to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy for over
20 years, since I lived in Asheville.  We're thinking now that retirement
will probably be in the Boone, NC area..........

Me?  Because my uncle was once posted as the pastor of a church in
Paradise.  Back in the fifties when I was an impressionable child.

He wrote a letter to my grandmother in which he said it truly was the
'land of milk and honey', a biblical reference to the promised land.

Over the years many family members joined him, usually settling either
in Loma Linda or St Helena.  He ended up in St Helena.  With a home
right by a large vineyard that ran up to the foothills of the
mountains.  When the Air Force gave us a choice of last assignment
here or Florida, I based it on his letter.

The Butte County lightening complex is about thirty miles north as the
smoke flies.  The Yuba River  complex roughly the same distance north
east, and the American River complex just a valley south of that.

We watched the Yuba River Complex start, though we didn't know it at
the time.  The thunder clouds were amazing.  We happened to be up
there on our way home from Reno with it started.

I've warned the family, one of these Smokey days I'm throwing the dog
in the back of the car and heading for the coast.  Anyone who happens
to be home at the time is welcome to come with me.

Today doesn't look too bad, you can't stare directly at the sun.

Not mundane at all, M.  This is very important and certainly needs to be a

you can afford.  Have been praying about the fires and for all the

er - can I come visit?  That talk of green beans fresh fromthe garden &/or
pickled did me in.  I have a rep in my family for liking my veggies raw and
relatively fresh.  That's rough in rural Michigan!

We were going to pick raspberries this morning, but the predicted lovely
weather gave way to drizzles instead and folks who know told us your berries
get moldy very fast if you pick in the rain.  Maybe Wednesday or Thursday.

I had to admit defeat this year - keeping up with a larger vegetable garden
has been too difficult the past two years.  I'm back to just peppers &
tomatoes - and the perennial asparagus bed. I can load up on summer squash
from other locals - if the weather will co-operate!  I never did get peas to
take off sadly.  Uless there's a big change before next summer, I'll just do
a container garden on the deck then as weeding even the smaller garden as
become a lick & a promise type thing.  It's time to let the grass take over
again.

Yum!  We're still waiting for decent raspberry picking weather.  Had big
storms last night, which probably ruined the Mosquito Barrier i sprayed
yesterday morning.  The 60% chance day, we had no rain.  The 30% chance, we
had severe storms.  Murphy strikes again!

We had such a late spring this year, that we're all hoping we also have a

they're ready to harvest.

It has been an interesting weather year, to be sure. And not always in a

I heard on the news this morning that real progress was made on containing
the fires this past weekend.  Is that true, or were they stating things in an
overly optimistic way?

Housing is very affordable here and we have a spare room until you find your
own place.  ;-)  But if you don't keep your door tightly closed, you may find
a curious cat checking you out.  And you don't shovel snow until late
November - usually - or after early April - usually.  heehee

But your good karma will pay off and a place for you to live WILL appear.
It's just that karma doesn't tell time in the same way we humans do. It WILL
work out - and you hae our prayers to make sure it is so!

Mike was showing me a job listing in Daly City - part-time, low pay, no
housing. I told him i don't need even more insults to my sinuses these days -
I'm struggling enough here with double the allergy meds I had last year.  He
tried to claim there weren't any fires around the bay area, but backed down
when I started quoting some of what you've told us to him!

> And hey Nann,

Come up to Washington. The sun is shining, the air is clean and the
rents are affordable. You can get a two bedroom apartment up here for
under $800 (cable TV included :) And you get the best scenery you've
ever seen!

You should. This is a great place to live, and no state income tax :)))
Not to mention that we have nice people here too! And we don't get a lot
of snow (if any). It does rain in the winter, but as my friend David
says "You don't have to shovel rain!" :-))))  I wouldn't live anywhere
else. The temperatures are great all year round. Right now it's nice and
warm during the day and at night, you can still pull the blanket on if
you want to :)

here's the thing-do you guys get winter?  I mean the "snow can't go
out too rainy" sort of winter?  I am so cold weather phobic.  I am
dead in cold-however if it is 110 I am very very happy.  I have had
the best time in the micro climate of the Santa Cruz Mountains which
is above the fog line and often hits 90 and at least 15 times a summer
is 100+.  Back in the days when I could not imagine not having money
(you know, three years ago before Megan's medical bills and my 22,000
a year insurance-those days) I always thought I would live in Arkansas
in the spring, summer and fall and head on over to Arizona in the
winter.  Yes Carole, bellingham is gorgeous but that is snow on that
mountain!

DeeTee, I know that Ohio is cold in the winter

However, I do know that I can handle Vancouver in the winter and
Seattle for that matter.

Well the beat goes on...
DeeTee - 16 Jul 2008 19:30 GMT
Well, it was worth a shot. I also remembered after posting that we have a
cot. I have absolutely no idea why we have so many sleeping possibilities.
When we make our next move (in a few years from now), I think we'll do away
with so many variations.

you would love it here then M, so come on over and get a place. We could be
neighbors. LOL

we have had so many above 100 days already I am not doing good with it this
year at all for some reason. we had two days of 111, and 112 right up your
alley.

Yes, there is snow on the mountain, but you're not going up there,
believe me!  In fact, you can only go so far and then no farther (unless
you are into mountain climbing with snow shoes, LOL :)  I drove up there
last March and could only drive a certain distance and then the roads
were closed. It was nice here, and freezing up there. So the snow on the
mountain is nice to look at but we don't get it here. We get rain :)

Diane,

How do you feel about the Pacific ocean?  I have never been an
Atlantic sort of person with the exception of the Floriday Keys, but
you made me almost want to at least visit!

Di, she would so love Cape Hatteras.  You tell her about it!

Of course I love the Atlantic.  And real beaches.

The Atlantic is nice. I used to LOVE to go out to Montauk Point when I
lived on Long Island. It's not like the Pacific though...they don't have
orcas :)

Cowichan Bay in BC Canada has this

on the Pacific side.  Those whales of Carole's go right by us!  Of course we
also have very little cold in the winter (not that you could tell this
year), vineyards near by, lots of B & B's, kayacking etc.  Near perfect!

I'm with you on the whales!  It's grey whales for us and O lknow their
migration patterns as well as i know my own!  I do love the ocean but
our ocean is so cold.  I learned to surf in florida; I got good at it
in Hawaii.  When I first moved here, I was stunned that I would have
to surf in a wet suit and have really not loved the process of wet
suits at all.  So I have a question: does the atlantic have a marine
layer like we do?  Is there relentless fog in the summer?

Not sure what a marine layer is. But you can surf in the summer on Long
Island without a wet suit. There are certain beaches where it is
allowed, so if that's important, find a place in the Township of Babylon
as those beaches belong to that township. We used to go and watch, but
we always had to pay to get in. Not sure how much it is now, but it was
like $7 when I moved in 2003.  There is no fog in the summer on Long
Island :)

I would hardly say that having a roof over your head is mundane!  Wow,
that is a scary situation to be in and to have to worry about being
homeless.   You know you have a whole huge extended family with members
in just about every state who would all gladly open their homes and
their hearts to you anytime!!!

Prayers definitely being lifted for your situation as well as for all
those fighting and dealing with the multiple fires in your area!

area is just beautiful.  I am going to google it tonight and just
spend some cyber time there.

Aren't rents higher in Canada?  I looked at a few towns just across the
border and it was MUCH cheaper to live here in B'ham, not to mention
that everyone comes down here to shop as our prices and I think sales
tax are less. I know when I go shopping around here, there are a LOT of
BC license plates in the parking lot!

Carole,
I think no rents are higher anywhere than in san frnacisco and santa
cruz (well and Manhatten).  just for the fun of it, go on craigslist
and select bay area and look at the santa cruz rents-keep in mind that
those houses going for 3 and 5 thousand dollars a month are not
special-they just are houses.

Sounds like NYC . . . one of the reasons I got out of there. My best
friend had one hell of a time finding a place to live. The rents in NYC
are affordable only if you are a doctor or a lawyer!

A lot of it is to avoid the Value Added Tax.  It pushes up the cost of
consumer goods for them.  Also to avoid very high liquor taxes.

Trust me it is interesting, but no fun to travel in Canada with a
cheep scate alcoholic.

Those are both exaggerations about Charlie, but he does like his beer,
and blanched at the price in Canada.

Yea, they have VAT in England as well. I only used to shop in places
where I could get the VAT back at the airport when I was coming home :)
Or in the duty free shops at Heathrow where there was no VAT :))))

Sweetheart, we have a couch that opens into a queen sized bed, a guest room,
blow-up twin mattress, blow-up queen mattress, four recliners, and two

i can think of few things less mundane than shelter. I hope you can
find something soon, M, but i love carole's idea of moving to
bellingham. having just visited there, i was ready to pack my things
and go. it's got to be one of the prettiest areas on earth.

that said, if you don't mind trading fire for drought, north carolina
is beautiful!

No disrespect to North Carolina, but if you are having a drought, the
fires won't be far behind.  It is a beautiful state.

A lot of people are finding that out and we are now on the list of the
top ten places to live in the US. I wouldn't move from here (unless I
absolutely had to for some reason - like if I met a cute, rich guy :))
But then, I'd probably talk him into moving here :)))

A, it's awful when a good place gets "discovered"!  I remember the years
Gainesville was high on Money magazines top cities there was serious conflict
for all of us.  We were proud to have it recognized, but we really didn't
want everyone and his brother moving in.  Growth is already big enough with
folks coming for school and never quite leaving because they like it so much.
