Califchief - 02 May 2008 23:00 GMT 25 - 30 years ago, Johnny Carson read from a stack of "Mother's Day" ads.......Sears, Monkey Wards, Penny's, Woolworth, etc., etc.
The ads featured tool boxes, fishing rods and reels, metal detectors, pool tables, fire extinguishers.
Everything any woman would want to receive on Mother's Day.
This week we received junk mail ads that included one from EXPRESS TIRES for a "Mother's Day Toyo Tire Sale." Or 4 Tire Rotation, or Lube-Oil Change & Filter, or Fan Belt & Hose Replacements.
Just what every woman wants on Mother's Day. <G>

Especially during the 'charming' years when sons and grandsons do their Mother's Day shopping with the help of dads and granddads.

Who wants cut flowers that are basically dead when you get them? Candy..................how many of us need more sugar ? A spa day......................maybe somebody would enjoy that. But - a whole set of new tires for the truck ? Wonderful gift.
And since my parts don't all work the way they were designed to, many gifts I receive are intended to make chores easier for older or physically limited hands.
Now if they come up with stag films or beer club memberships, they're gonna hear some complaints.

> But - a whole set of new tires for the truck ? > Wonderful gift. I actually got a set of tires for my birthday one year from my parents when I was in college. It was perfect as I needed the car to get to school :)

Donna G. - 03 May 2008 06:41 GMT Hey, I'd take a new set of tires, a tune up, an oil change, a massage or day at the spa, etc., any day! I'd also take any kitchen gadget that I want or would be helpful as well as anything around the house that woud be helpful for a gimp. Some of my best gifts have been things that most people might not like, such as a crockpot, a toaster oven, etc. because I love to cook and these things are not only useful, but often last for many many years!!! Everytime I use my toaster oven I think of my parents as they are the ones that bought it for me. Same goes for many other things I have around the house/apartment!

It is early Teflon, but much heavier than the irons generally sold now. My ten year old grandson gets up and makes waffles for all of us on Sunday mornings when he is here. And I always feel like my Grandpa is looking over his shoulder.
May not be an antique or an heirloom, but if I died my kids would fight over it.

nanny - 04 May 2008 05:05 GMT How neat, Jo. I love waffles, and they don't make them as good as the older ones. So....tomorrow is Sunday, and I think I'll make me a couple waffles ;-) How sentimental for you, too. Nanny

I learned some years back to buy myself something I really like every Mother's Day, in case everyone else forgets ;-) This year was no different.
I was in a flower shop last week buying a couple gifts, and just as I walked in the first door, there IT was! You know all the ceramic and plaster figurines they make to put on the porch or in the garden? This one had my name on it! But....I'd never spent that much for a Mother's Day gift, so I looked, then walked out, putting it in the back of my mind. Couldn't forget it, so went back to the flower shop today and bought it. I've never seen anything like it before. It is rather large, but it has a bench, with a little girl and a little boy sitting on it sharing a book. And, it even had some colors in it, rather than plain gray. Well, the reason it appealed to me is that we have both granddaughters and grandsons, thus the boy AND girl; plus, I love to read and have always read to the grandkids when they were younger. They only had that one and she gave me a good deal on it. Love it! Nanny

Last year was my first "Birdie Mother's Day". I bought myself a bouquet of flowers at Albertson's that were from Dundee. I gave him allowance and got them :)

Nanny Yea, well, he gives me LOVE all on his own :-))) He's such a little sweetheart and he has come such a long way in the year that I've had him. I knew there was a sweet, little bird in there, he just needed to learn to trust humans again :)

ANN M - 04 May 2008 16:08 GMT Your stories remind me of my late mom's request for every Mother's Day. She always wanted a new rose bush or other plant for the garden. For one wedding anniversary, my dad bought her a wheelbarrow which I still have in my garage. Ann

Navy - 13 May 2008 20:49 GMT Just remembered something. I was an engineer when I was working and my husband got me the grandest Mother's Day Gift - a "Machinery's Handbook", considered the most essential tool of an engineer of almost any mechanical field! The last few years I was working, I splurged on my last revision and got the enlarged print! Of course, that *enlarged* the book as well LOL but the increased readability was worth it.
