Duckie - 30 Apr 2008 02:46 GMT
Donna G says you guys need an update.

Just had Remicade today so very tired but I was so before I got there as
I just got back from Nashville from a week and putting my 89 year old
mother's borrowed walker plus my brother's walker into the car and out.
Mother is recovering from her fall and her blacken face is nearly back
to normal. Spencer has lost 20 pounds this year and I have found 10 of
them. Got that 10 when I caught the flu in Jan. [had the shot for that]
which led to bronchitis which then led to pneumonia [had the shot for
that as well]. Guessing the pneumonia shot kept me out of the hospital
but just barely. Was eating nothing but beef broth and chicken broth for
about 10 days as my throat was screaming in pain from all the coughing
and that was when I gained the 10. Now there is something really really
wrong and evil about kicking a sick person when they are down. lol

A class I had been waiting to take since we moved to California was
finally offered again this year and I had signed up for that but had to
miss the first one due to being so sick. I did make it to the second one
and all the rest. I had forgotten how much fun that was. Planning on
taking a few more next year.
Of course the day the class was offered was the same day I keep Noah. I
get up at 6am and drive half way to the city to meet Jen and the baby.
She then drives to us around 5pm to pick him. Until just recently it had
been sooooo much fun but his weight is now around 18 pounds and I am
having trouble holding him. At 11 months he still doesn't get the ''put
your arms around my neck and hold on''.  I had to tell her I couldn't do
it next year. At two he will be able to hold on and I can do it again. I
am going to really miss my weekly hugs and snuggles.
Anyway, she would pick him up at 5 and I would pick up my supplies and
get in the car and head up to Canada College for class. The class was
suppose to be over at 9:30 but often ran until 10:30. It was one long
day but oh so much fun.
New knee is giving me trouble again since the pneumonia due to not
getting out of bed for nearly two weeks. I had to start the rehab all
over again which is more than annoying but I am getting there.
Dancing again and that is great. Actually was suppose to perform this
May but John called me in Nashville and said his shoulder surgery is
scheduled on that very day. He has seen me through so much I said
nothing. It is my turn. Now I am going to have to learn to cook
something enough to get us fed for a few weeks. But I am glad that he is
finally getting his shoulder done as he hasn't been able to paddle in
several months and is grumpy. lol
We moved into our house last June? I think after we had the whole thing
rewired, all the walls repainted as the electricians had fun with them,
all the floors sanded and some new hardwood laid where there was none
before, and a bit of plumbing done like a raised toilet in the master
bath. I love the laundry which is right off the kitchen and the fact
that this is a ranch style house and I have only two steps from the
outside to get inside. We replaced the lawn this spring and I had the
gardener not lay sod in several curves hugging the front lawn. I have
been slowly putting in plants and sometime next year, it should look
great. My favorite so far is weeping japanese cherry tree. Tomato plants
are in the ground in the back and I planted a cucumber this time too.
Had Noah in the backyard yesterday in the lawn. He kept patting the
grass. I was getting him to practice going from a sitting position
rolling forward onto his knees and then back to a sitting one all on
this soft new grass. perfect place to fall over and not get hurt.
And he finally figured out how to sip through a straw yesterday, the
first step in moving totally away from the bottle. That was really
exciting.
So life is settling in here and except for a few niggling aches in my
left ankle and the stupid right thumb, I am practically pain free. Okay
not really pain free but under a level 4 which for me is quiet.
Hope all is well with the rest of the crowd.

Under a level 4 is great - amazing what we consider great again.  Hope all
goes well for John - I know it is a disappointment but.....  How wonderful
to hear about the "steps" of development for Noah.  Don't worry - 2 will
come soon enough.

You take care - glad to hear an update and to hear that in general all is
well (well except for the pneumonia etc.  Again amazing what we consider
well now.

Take care,

The trouble is, that is the start of the terrible two's and it will be "don'
wanna'"!  They do get to be great around 18 months when they can start to
communicate well, and get better at moving around.  That's when I really
started to enjoy my three boys, all through the teen-age years, believe it
or not.

So glad your pain is under 4 and you were able to finally take a class you
wanted.  I think I must have missed something, but what class was that?  I'm
working on a Punch! home design program.  It's lots of fun, seeing your own
house in 3D on the monitor.  I still have trouble keeping the walls "stuck"
together, but have hopes I will learn the right way to do them.

Go, Duckie.  So thrilled to hear from you again.

Class was called French Pattern Drafting and basically you take a small
set of measurements. Then on a flat piece of paper you start drawing
rectangles and use a bunch of formulas and suddenly tah-dah you have
something called a moulage which you sew together in muslin. It fits
like a second skin but with tweaking here and there fits perfectly.
I really am excited about it. Already made one top and now that I am
home and catching up on appointments and the like I will sew this weekend.

That sounds interesting.  I took all sorts of classes when I was between
college years and just trying to collect credits at junior colleges, etc.
Bet I'm one of the few accounting degree graduates that has a
stretch-and-sew class on their transcript.

BTW, I'm so happy to hear about your time with Noah.  I get my one day a
week with Emily who was born Thanksgiving morning.  There is nothing on the
whole earth better is there?

Today was a bit of a challenge. He was cutting 3 new teeth and his usual
happy self was not. but he didn't cry all day long. Just most of it.
Took him up to the college to meet a friend for her lunch and he was
happy there -- probably because it was all new and loads to look at and
all those ladies making googly eyes at him.
But he usually is such a joy that it makes my heart sing.

I'm trying to make curtains, LOL :)))

Carole
Kelly - 05 May 2008 19:18 GMT
Curtains without pain - try iron on double sided tape such as steam a seam
(or ask Jo-Anns for their equivalent suggestion) try some of the easy ideas
in the curtain area of JoAnns or a spot near you (I know there is a great
JoAnns at Sunset Blvd in Bellingham).

The course sounds excellent Duckie.  I have pretty much given up on clothes
and just concentrate on my quilts.  Have orders right now for 9 - 3 crib
size, 3 twins and 3 table runners.  Did a handbag and entered it into our
quilt show - it turned out well but didn't win anything but that didn't
surprise me.  It was great but not GREAT - some of them were incredible.  So
imaginative.

But of course I wouldn't have carried them into public - they were too wild
for me (I am rather a subdued person - in my clothing of course not in my
personality).

I do have that iron on stuff. I'll check at JoAnns next time I go to
Goodwill. I bought an all in one set for the bedroom, and I don't like
the sheets (I prefer the tshirt sheets), so I thought I'd make curtains
for the bedroom window out of the flat sheet since it will match the
comforter :)

I do have a sewing machine that Mom bought me years ago, so I can also
use that :-)

Carole
Navy - 08 May 2008 21:36 GMT
I'd recommend having it overhauled if it's been quite a while since you used
it.  We did my Mom's and it made a big difference.  A lot of the bearing
surfaces were rough and needed smoothing and then there were some bearings
that needed replacing.  They also do a "thorough" job of lubing and oiling.

take it to any sewing machine shop and tell them it needs a "tune-up".  They
should check all the belts as well as looking at the bearing and doing the
oiling and lubing Navy mentioned.  Also check the needle adjustment and a few
other things.

If you want a recommended shop, ask around at fabric stores.  They usually
have a lot of info on the local sewing machine repair shops.

(we took my machine to one place in the Boston area, just based on a coupon
we received in the mail.  It was "so-and-so & Sons" and it turned out one of
the sons had played baseball for the Univ. of Florida and still holds a
career hitting record there!  Had a shot at the pros, but an injury and a
falling out with the college coach kept him from making the right contacts.
We enjoyed talking with him!)

Carole,
Right next to JoAnn's is a vaccuum and sewing machine place called Boomers I
think?  They will almost for sure service machines or will know who will
service your make.  Seems to me they are close to you as well which helps.

Singer Products Maintenance.  Checking with the local yardage stores is a

Kenneth D. King wrote a CD/Book on the subject called the moulage. You
can find it on Pattern Review.com  I had it before but really needed to
see it done in person. Can't believe how really easy it is. The first
one took about 3 hours. I went home from class and did another right
away for the practice and cut the time in half.  The next week the
teacher decided whoever measure me was flaky and she redid them and I
made another. Took even less time. Now I think I could draft and sew in
about an hour and a half. {muslin mind you not something you would
actually wear in public]
Of course the real gem was watching her alter and tweak each persons so
that things fit really well. It is amazing how everyone looked good no
matter the size in real life in a garment that fit them perfectly.

Duckie, really nice to hear from you.  Know you were tired after your week
of looking after two handicapped folks, and putting walkers in and out of
car.  Glad your mother his recovering from her fall.  Has Spencer been sick
to lose the weight or is it just age catching up with him?

So sorry about the flu, and bronchitis, and pneumonia.  Just having one of
those would have been bad enough; you really didn't need all three.  Glad
you did get to take most of the class you wanted.  But it was on a bad day
for you being on "Noah's day".  Know you enjoyed having him around though;
isn't a grandbaby the most precious thing to have!

Doing rehab really isn't much fun, but it really does pay off, as you know.
Stick with it, and keep dancing.  Does the dancing bother your knee very
much?

What has to be done to John's shoulder?  Surely hope whatever it is will be
just exactly what is needed to take away all the pain and stiffness, and any
other problem he is having with it.  Tell him to think about how nice it
will be after it is all over to be able to get back out on the water without
problems.

Sounds as if you are enjoying the house and the grounds.  Don't work too
hard in the yard though, and wear yourself out, or hurt your knee.  And do
keep in touch occasionally to let us know you're still alive!

Donna G says you guys need an update.

Just had Remicade today so very tired but I was so before I got there as
I just got back from Nashville from a week and putting my 89 year old

Duckie - 02 May 2008 08:32 GMT
Let's see Gwen --
Spencer had been getting two trays but someone told the dietician that
he wasn't eating the second one so she stopped them. Guess he was eating
some of it. This boy gets 3 Ensure a day at snack time too and has for
years. Ah to be 6'4" tall...
Dancing doesn't hurt it at all except to a certain step in Samba which
my teacher figured out how I can avoid.
John is having day surgery on the shoulder. I know he is having the bone
spurs taken off and they found his rotator cuff torn which will be
repaired. Other than that I am not sure what is going to happen to him.
Wasn't at the doctor's office and got a male version of what the doctor
said and that took prying. lol
Noah is a blessing and makes me smile. My favorite is that when he sees
me he beams. I wouldn't have missed this for anything in the world.
As for gardening, out here everyone has a gardener. Mine not only cuts
the lawn but knows how to prune and garden as well. The lawn cutting and
trimming is all of 70 dollars a month and he comes once a week. It cost
that per visit for a lawn guy in Mass. and they didn't know a week from
a fern or bulb. He has done the majority of the digging and John loves
that. lol  I just call him and tell him I have more work for him to do
and we make a date.  I point to where I want the plant and he digs and
plants. I love it here.

Yes, we all have our gardeners.  And if we're lucky they take care of the
heavy stuff so we can just do the fun stuff ourselves.  Plus almost
anything grows here.

Do you use blossom set spray on your tomatoes?  We have a real problem
getting them to set without it.

I just came home with two pots of creeping petunias.  One red and one
white.  And two Calibrachoas that make the most gorgeous perennial hanging
plants.

Our yard guy rides a bicycle and just shows up every so often.  Usually on
Sunday evening.  But he works for almost nothing and also plays with the
dog who just adores him.

Wish it was as easy to find a housekeeper.

Jo
Duckie - 04 May 2008 01:19 GMT
Just bought some Jo. But I have had pretty good luck without it. The
bees are all over the lemon trees and lime tree now. I haven't check the
new orange tree but I am hopeful.
Bought the blossom set when I was looking for something for the old rose
bush that had something white which I am guessing is powdery mildew now.
Anyway sprayed all sorts of things yesterday evening.
I am going to need someone to clean and help me with John after the
surgery and I have no idea where to start. But thinking that I may just
call Home Instead who are taking care of Mother a couple times a week
and my brother once a month. Even a couple hours a day will help while
he is down. We will see.

Housekeepers of any sort are harder to find.  Especially if you aren't out
in the workforce.  Women that are share with their co-workers, maybe.  But
they are very jealous of someone if they get someone that does a good job
and that they trust.

Plus, a lot of housekeepers really hate to have anyone around watching them
work, so they much prefer a place where everyone is off to work for the
day.

Yard guys on the other hand are out and about, so they are easier to poach.

At least where you live there should be agencies around like home instead.

ah, Mike is doing much more outside than he ever did in Florida.  lol - I did
a real double-take when he declared he *likes* to mow the yard.  I did all of
that in FL (much smaller yard there - and I didn't mind it as much as he
did).  he declares the difference is the average summertime temperature.  We
now share our neighbor's lawn mower - her mower, we buy the gas and Mike mows
her much smaller yard as well as ours.  That leaves my energy for weeding the
gardens I've put in!  I'm under orders to "let" him dig the holes for the
trees & shrubs I have coming from the arbor day foundation. Like he thought
he was going to get out of that!  lol my hands/wrists/elbows will not permit
major digging these days and mike really needs more exercise  ;-)

We are doing similiar things (if the landscaper ever finishes the
hardscaping out back - the front is almost finished though).  Pat is mowing
lawn,  I am planting small plants and the odd large one, he digs the large
holes and plants the larger shrubs and trees.  I do the weeding of the tiny
weeds coming up in the new soil by sitting in my chair and hoeing (I figure
they might compost if I keep turning them over - might not work but for
now.... they are small weeds). That way I can also keep an eye on the
development of the stuff I have planted.  It is turning out so well.  Now if
we can finally get the landscaper to finish the stuff in the backyard - like
the paving decking and the sprinkler system and the soil in my raised
beds..... He only started 7 months ago.  Long story.

Glad to hear Mike is enjoying it - Pat is looking forward to doing more as
our weather is improving which is unusual - he has never really taken an
interest before.  It is now our "together" time.

Thanks for checking in. You have been missed.

Glad your mom and brother are recovering. Sorry to hear how ill you have
been. I hope you are doing much better now.

Sorry to hear your knee is giving you trouble and that you have to do more
rehab on it. Glad you are dancing again though. I know how much you enjoy
that.

Hope Johns shoulder surgery goes well and that he heals quickly.

Have fun with your planting.  Sounds good to me.

Glad to hear you are practically pain free. That is great to hear.

Take care and check in from time to time when you can.

Hi Duckie!!

We were in Cambridge for lectures & reunion last week and ate in the North
End Wed. night.  first time either of us had been up there since the central
artery came down.  What a difference!  The park space is lovely and you have
a dramatic view of the Zakim bridge.  And it was the first time we didn't get
turned around finding our way as all that blasted eternal construction was
out of the way.

Your time with little Noah sounds wonderful.  You must be so glad you moved
out there!  And a ranch house.... how nice!  We returned about 1 am Saturday
morn and the moment we opened the door we knew we had water in the basement -
the mold smell was that strong.  dead sump pump, 3rd major basement flood in
2 years, not to mention the spring thaws/heavy rains problems.  I crave a
ranch house!

You know you are doing the right thing in helping with John's surgery, but
you don't have to take it too far re: the cooking!  Learn a couple of simple
things and memorize the routes to good delis and the numbers of places that
deliver.  heehee, you must take advantage of those urban joys.

stick around - we miss you!  and we can help you get through those months
when Noah is too heavy but can't yet hold on.

Nann,

sorry to hear about your sump pump and the flooding in the basement. I hope
all goes well with you and that you can get a new pump and don't have to go
thru that trouble too much. My thoughts are with you.
