A Wild Week

Have you ever noticed how some weeks jump wildly from super highs to super
lows?

My week started off last Sunday with the three of us attending a wonderful
spiritual feast.  Gladys Knight brough her gospel choir (Saints Unified
Voices) to our Church and did a series of 4 musical firesides over the
weekend.  They were wonderful.

Then, Monday, my chest started feeling full and my hands and feet started to
itch like crazy.  By Wednesday I had bronchitis and had to go on a Z-pack,
which I have been on many times before.  Nothing seemed to help my hands,
but Thursday and Friday were good days at work, so I was happy.

Then Saturday my hands and feet started swelling like bolloons.  It isn't RA
type inflammation - everything is just swollen and the itching is HORRIBLE!
BP is fine, blood sugars are fine, and my joints don't hurt.  Nothing
helps - not antihystamines, not steroid creams, not diuretics - nothing.  I
emailed my PCP and I am sure he will respond in the morning, and I will call
my RD tomorrow as well.

What I am wondering is - should I take my Humira today and what the heck
could this be?  My chest is much better - still a little cough, but not
much.

Any thoughts guys?

It sounds like an allergic reaction to something. Can you take Benedryl? I
always keep some on hand because I'm allergic to so darn many things.

Keep us informed, DeeTee

Yikes, Walt, that sounds rather scarey!  I, personally, think I would
hold off on the humira at least until you can talk to your doctors and
try to figure out what the heck is going on!

One time when I was having a pretty nasty allergic reaction and the rash
was super super uncomfortable, the doctor told me to take some pred and
also to get some pepcid complete as there is something in that that also
helps with allergic reactions!  Worth a try!

Sure hope you get some relief soon and get to feeling much better all
the way around!!!

Blessings,

I personally would delay that humira until you get an all clear.  Talk about
the pits Walt.  In the meantime for the itching try oatmeal baths - put
oatmeal into a gauze or cheesecloth square, tie it up and put into a bath or
use it in a shower.  Put it under the tap and then float it in or pat it on
your skin.  It might help the itchiness - only thing that helped with the
shingles.

Have you ever had cellulitis?  It kinda sounds like that.  I get it every
time I get stung by a wasp or bee or whatever.  Sorry you're so miserable
and praying you get some answers asap.

I have a few questions:  is the itching still just confined to hands
and feet?  Had any contact with poison ivy or animals that have been
in contact with poison ivy?  Any rash with that swelling?  If yes, is
it raised at all?  Is the swelling confined to the areas of itching?
or other way around?  Any itching of eyes or throat?    Any mosquito
bites in the last week?

No on the humira until you get this figured out-

What a major drag.  Lots of sympathy and hugs from this end of the
country

Yes, and a little on my ankles.

Not that I know of.

No rash, but there are raised areas of greater swelling.

The itching started first, then the swelling came.  Both are in my hands and
feet, not around the joints but in the tissue areas - palms, back of the
hands, fingers between the joints - with my hands being worse than my feet.

> Any itching of eyes or throat?

Nope.

No.

Yeah, I decided to hold the Humira.  I hope I can get my RD to call me
tomorrow, or get in to see her quickly.  Being a Hopkins doc, she isn't very
accessible.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts!

M may be right on the money.  Poison Ivy is rampant where you live, and
this is a prime time to get exposed to it.  A little bit can be harder to
identify than a lot.

Are you familiar with a place called Sugerloaf Mountain?  Has really pretty
rhododendrons this time of year and a nice place to spend a Saturday
afternoon.  Its thick with the stuff.  So are lots of places in the DC
area.

Walt,

Were you able to get in to see a doctor today?   Were they able to
figure out what is going on???    Just thinking of you and hoping you

Oh, and one thing about poison ivy that I learned the hard way. If
you're exposed to it, your sensitivity is heightened for about a month.
When I bought my house, I pulled out a bunch of poison ivy (wearing
gloves and being very careful not to let the vines brush against my
arms). When I was done, I immediately scrubbed off in a hot shower. A
month later, after a walk through a wooded part of Central Park (where
there was no visible poison ivy), I developed a killer rash on exactly
the parts of my arm that might have been exposed to the poison ivy.

And the winner is .......

A medication reaction - we think.  Evidently it can take as long as 6 weeks
for a sensitivity to a drug to manifest itself, especially when your immune
system is suppressed.  So I am off the Tricor we started 5 weeks ago for my
elevated triglycerides.  I didn't take it this morning, thinking that's what
it might be, and I already feel a lot better.  We won't know for sure until
I try it again in a couple of weeks and see if the reaction occurs again.

So now I can add to the growing list of things my body doesn't like.  Oh
well.

Thanks everyone for your good thoughts!

Walt,

Glad the doctor figured out what is going on, but sorry it is a reaction
to a med.  That always is frustrating, but am so glad the reaction
wasn't any worse.   Prayers that you get to feeling much better now that
you are off of the offending medication!

I'm glad you found out what it probably is.  I just hate trying things again
that might have caused an allergic reaction.  One time it happened, I told
the doctor, let's just assume that's what it was, and I never took it again.
I never had the reaction either.  I know that that is not possible with some
medications, but am praying for you and sending a few hugs (if it's poison
ivy - don't let me close to you - I've had a few bad spells myself).

hope that's it, walt, and you continue to improve. . . .and that you
can find a different med to take its place.

This is so weird Walt, I had the same thing happen to me. Only I had a
mosquito bite which I am allergic too and my period and the flu all at the
same time. I was thinking that it was the mosquito bite but since you
mentioned  it with the flu/virus stuff I am now wondering if it was
something from that.

But then it still could have been a reaction to the bite I got too.

Weird stuff we have happen to us isn't it.
Glad you got into the drs to have it checked out.
