Walt quoted these figures and commented:

Homicides.........17,694
Times 2...........35,388
Times 3...........53,082

Yeah, the Urban Institute needs to use another source of data.

chief, what about the 0-to-24 and the 64-to-ancient (who may not qualify for
medicare/social security) age groups that were not included in the 22,000
death figure?  they may well have made up for the discrepancy.

Chief, may I suggest that you try actually reading the article before you
try to discredit the data.  The study I quoted referred specifically to
adults ages 25-64 (see my quote below).  The data you quoted is for all
ages.  Do you really think that only 25-64 year olds are murder victims?  I
know you are not that foolish.

Rather than trying to discredit data you don't like with invalid
comparisons, why don't you try a rational discussion?

For the record, I don't like either plan being proposed by the democratic
presidential condidates.  Neither do I think that either plan stands any
chance of getting through Congress.  Rather, I am looking for local
solutions, such as those that are being developed in numerous local
juridictions around the country.

As these areas gain experience and try different approaches, I hope that we
will find programs that work and replicate them, and that we will find
programs that don't work and discard them.  None of that is possible though
as long as people on the extremes of both sides continue to speak and act
irrationally about a very real national crisis.
