Having gone through three left knee replacements in 1998-2000, I can
recommend doing horizontal leg raises on top of your bed to strengthen the
muscles. I remember after one operation I wasn't allowed to leave hospital
until I could get the heel off the bed. All hospitals and surgeons have
their own opinion as to what they consider is good enough for you to go home
again.

When I had my first one done two years ago, that was the same criteria - you
had to get your heel off the bed in a straight leg lift, and I had such a
struggle with that. However, last autumn I found they had changed the
criteria to getting your knee bent at least to 90 degrees, and managing
stairs up and down.

I wonder if the criteria changes according to the urgent need of your empty
bed!!

You cynic you!!! Actually, they were welcome to it - 3 nights in the Hotel
GRI was enough and I was glad to get home. I cheated when the physio tested
and anchored my foot on the ground and scrunched forward on my chair!!

LOL! no, splodge. it is the current criteria for hospital release, both
here in washington and in california (a friend of mine had her knee done in
santa cruz about a year ago -- same criteria.).
