ironjustice@aol.com - 18 Mar 2008 13:26 GMT Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients Display An Anti-Inflammatory Response To The Vegan Diet Main Category: Arthritis Also Included In: Cardiovascular / Cardiology; Stroke / Neuroprotection; Nutrition / Diet Article Date: 18 Mar 2008 - 3:00 PDT
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who eat a gluten-free vegan diet could be better protected against heart attacks and stroke. RA is a major risk factor for these cardiovascular diseases, but a gluten-free vegan diet was shown to lower cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and oxidizedLDL (OxLDL), as well as raising the levels of natural antibodies against the damaging compounds in the body that cause symptoms of the chronic inflammatory disease rheumatoid arthritis, such as phosphorylcholine. These findings are reported in the open access journal Arthritis Research & Therapy.
The idea that we can influence our health by changing our eating habits has become a fashionable idea among lifestyle and consumer magazines. There is evidence that dietary changes can bring about health benefits but specific results are not widespread.
Now, Johan Frostegard of the Rheumatology Unit at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm and colleagues divided sixty-six RA patients randomly into two groups. They randomly assigned 38 of the volunteers to eat a gluten-free vegan diet, and the other 28 a well- balanced but non-vegan diet for one year. They analysed the levels of fatty, lipid molecules in blood samples using routine analytical methods at regular periods. They also measured oxLDL and anti- phosphorylcholine (antiPC) factor at the beginning of the experiment, at 3 months and again at 12 months.
The researchers found that the gluten-free vegan diet not only reduced LDL and oxLDL levels and raised antiPC antibodies but lowered the body- mass index (BMI) of the volunteers in that group. Levels of other fatty molecules, including triglycerides and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) stayed the same. In contrast, none of the indicators differed significantly for the control groups on the conventional healthy diet.
AntiPC antibodies are studied within CVDIMMUNE, an European consortium led by Dr Frostegard with the hypothesis that such antibodies can protect against cardiovascular disease and can be used as diagnostic and therapeutic factors.
Frostegard and colleagues have now shown that diet could be used to improve the long-term health of people with rheumatoid arthritis. They concede that a bigger study group will be needed to discern which particular aspects of the diet help the most.

Dear Tommy boy,
I was waiting for you to find the press' interpretation of the findings. Basically, it showed that using a highly specialised diet could result in a slight (but STATISTICALLY significant) decrease in a few values that are linked to age related ailments in EVERYONE, not just RA sufferers. Further, the study said NOTHING about having any meaningful effect on their condition nor on long term survival. In fact, going on a restrictive diet compared to one that was designed to produce a small but statistically significant difference is nothing new - if you even read the shite you post you'd know that. These 'studies' have been going on for decades finding the same things.
Cheers mate,
Ari

Effects of a very low-fat, vegan diet in subjects with rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the effects of a very low-fat, vegan diet on patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). DESIGN: Single-blind dietary intervention study. SUBJECTS AND STUDY INTERVENTIONS: This study evaluated the influence of a 4-week, very low-fat (approximately 10%), vegan diet on 24 free-living subjects with RA, average age, 56 +/- 11 years old. Outcome measurements: Prestudy and poststudy assessment of RA symptomatology was performed by a rheumatologist blind to the study design. Biochemical measures and 4-day diet data were also collected. Subjects met weekly for diet instruction, compliance monitoring, and progress assessments. RESULTS: There were significant (p < 0.001) decreases in fat (69%), protein (24%), and energy (22%), and a significant increase in carbohydrate (55%) intake. All measures of RA symptomatology decreased significantly (p < 0.05), except for duration of morning stiffness (p > 0.05). Weight also decreased significantly (p < 0.001). At 4 weeks, C-reactive protein decreased 16% (ns, p > 0.05), RA factor decreased 10% (ns, p > 0.05), while erythrocyte sedimentation rate was unchanged (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study showed that patients with moderate-to-severe RA, who switch to a very low-fat, vegan diet can experience significant reductions in RA symptoms.

When you have a scab and leave it alone it protects new tissue forming underneath, so it gives FF a chance to heal and get energized. Yet, that said, once there is a wound, one only gets about 80% value in new tissue. So, maybe there is hope. One wound, 80% regrowth, two wounds, 80% regrowth of the 80%, yeah, might be good. Just have to make sure once the scab lifts there is someone to make sure another needs to form. :-0

You know how lettuce shrinks when you put it unwrapped in the fridge? According to the laws of physics, at some point the lettuce should disappear entirely. Now all we need is a refrigerater to put FF in...make sure he is unwrapped, and SHUT THE DOOR! nee nee nee......

I said jousting with him is *like* picking on a scab, in that arguing with him just keeps him here and active on our list. I didn't say that Tommy *was* picking on a scab (no doubt he is), but that's his own private business and I hope he takes your advice.
