sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 16 Mar 2008 23:29 GMT A man in our church in the military was transferred to Romania; his wife and 5 year old son went with him. They came home in November for her to have another little boy, and then all went back to Romania. About two weeks ago, Jackson (5) started crying with his legs hurting, and when they went out to walk he would beg to go back inside. Robert and the son were sent to Vienna, Austria to a big hospital.
They determined that he is losing muscle mass and strength. They did a port for the IV, but at night his body would swell so much that the needle stuck in him on the inside, so he was in a great deal of pain. He still can't walk or get around, and none of the tests have determined what is wrong. They have mentioned a couple of things it could be, one of them being autoimmune which will never get any better they say.
The military indicated the end of the week that they will send the whole family to the U.S. this week. They have asked to go to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, but that could be or it could not be. Tracie's mother just retired recently so she flew to Vienna to help with the baby who is breast fed. Being in Birmingham would be wonderful for them, because people from the church and family members would be able to visit and help. They have asked for as many prayers as possible.
Thank you for your support for them. Gwen

Hopefully that care is in Birmingham but if not, maybe close enough so they won't be completely isolated from friends and family.

Donna G. - 17 Mar 2008 07:42 GMT Oh, how scary and how sad. Praying that a diagnosis can be made quickly and that it is something treatable!!!
Also praying that the family can be located somewhere fairly close to family and/or friends.

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 17 Mar 2008 18:27 GMT Thank all of you so much for your prayers. Tracie used to be on staff at our church and they lived near our pastor and his family. Our pastor was back for the first time yesterday after a sabbatical of 6 weeks (which he spent in the hospital having surgery and then having to go back the second time--lost 20 lbs.) When he asked for prayer for Jackson, his voice broke and I thought he was going to break down. Our church is certainly praying for them. Gwen

sweetpickleNO@SPAMknology.net - 19 Mar 2008 18:43 GMT The following came from Tracie today. Thanks from all of us for the prayers going up for the family. Gwen
Well, I have some good news! We are flying back to the states tomorrow, Thursday, at 10:35 am and will arrive in Atlanta tomorrow evening with my mom. She will travel on to Tallahassee, and we will go directly to Birmingham where Robert's parents will meet us. UAB Children's is accepting Jackson, and he will stay there until they release him to outpatient care.
Jackson is doing great considering where we were a few days ago. He is able to walk a short distance between us, though still pretty akward on his feet. He still has leg pain if he walks fast or long and cannot squat, but we are so thankful just to see him walk at all! He is his talkative self, and he says that he can't wait to return to Alabama. He is ready to be out of the hospital. Anytime a doctor or nurse asks him how he feels he says, "Much, much better," because he is just so anxious to leave and doesn't want anymore tests.
We are all doing well. Having mom here has been such an answer to prayer. It allows me to travel back and forth to the hospital freely without having to take Tanner. Which turns out to be a necessity. We just found out yesterday that Jackson has a positive Rotovirus test, although no symptoms at all, so they have isolated us to his hospital room, and I just come and go to feed Tanner. Rotovirus is quite common among children's wards and usually just creates a bad upset stomach and potential dehydration. Tanner and Jackson both received a new vaccine against it though, which may explain why there are not symptoms. He is still contagious though to other children and so we just have to take precautions like frequent hand washing and not sharing his food or kissing him. This should pass in a few days though and the flight won't be a problem.
So, we will keep you posted. Your prayers are working. We are so grateful.
Love, Tracie
