On Sunday, February 24th, I tried to get out of bed and
discovered I couldn't put weight on my left left/foot.
They were swollen like a loaf of bread.

Looked at the calendar and remembered I had a doctor's
appointment (neurologist who has been studying my leg
cramps) and decided to wait.

He only prescribed a pain/inflammation pill that put
me to sleep 12-16 hours a day.

The following Wednesday I had a rheumy appointment and
he was dismayed, although the swelling had gone down a
bit but I was using a cane to keep weight off the leg.

He mentioned the possibility of a clot(s) and ordered
an untrasound of the lower leg.  The earliest date
available was this Tuesday (11th).  Meanwhile the RD
eliminated the earlier Rx -- too strong -- and wrote
one that now has me sleeping 7-9 hours a night, no
afternoon naps, and I can now walk short distances
without the cane.

The ultrasound Tuesday showed several (small) clots
in the leg.  The radiologist got on the phone with
the rheumy and PCP.  Got an immediate appointment with
the PCP (already have a date with the RD next Wedesday).
She discussed the clots, prescribed warafin/coumadin
with blood draws that night, tomorrow (Friday), and
every M-W-F while on the warafin/coumadin.

So....I'm up in the air as to how long this is going
to last....weeks, months, or ......

Funny thing in the PCP's office Tuesday.  She said
she sees these thing about once a year.  That day
she had 2 previous patients to me with the same thing.

Mary and I went square dancing that evening for the
first time since mid-January, and we're planning to
attend Friday evening as long as the swelling remains
down and I don't need a cane.  <g>

... OK, I pulled the pin. Now what? Hey, where're you going?

Well, as they say if it isn't one thing....

I hope you do as well on the blood thinners as I have and that they get to a
proper dose quickly.  The diet rules can be a little daunting at first, but
mostly are the old everything in moderation.

Lots of hugs and prayers for much continued square dancing.

Hi Chief,,,,  You make me gooo hmmmm.   Walking with a cane,,, blood clots
confirmed,,,,, and you go square dancing.   Of coarse,,,, it does not mean
you are dancing all the time,,,, to be with people you know and like is a
big part of something like this    but    the thought of blood clots roaming
around in your system while you dance,,,,,,  just said a prayer for you and
hope for the best to take place.

Harv,

As I learned from experience, blood clots aren't particular about when they
roam around.  They really don't care if you've been sitting on the sofa
watching TV for the last month.

In fact they are likely to be more of a problem if you can't get up and move
around, though I don't know that square dancing in required.

I hate sitting in my seat where I belong on a plane trip.  Much prefer to
spend as much time as I can standing at the back of the plane etc.  All I
have to tell them is I get blood clots in my legs and they let me stay back
there as long as there isn't any turbulence.  I try to spend at least ten
minutes of every hour on my feet.

They can be very frustrating.  First pulmonary embolism I had put me in the
hospital for a week, and I felt great after the first hour when the blood
thinners kicked in.  Being in the hospital and not sick for a week will
drive a sane person crazy.  (They don't require the hospital stay anymore)

But it was terrifying at first knowing if could have just as easily killed
me instantly.

(So could a lot of things, I got over it.)

Wow, Joe, sorry to hear about the blood clots!!!

I am surprised, though, that they didn't put you in the hospital!

I have had a blood clot in each of my legs, and both times they put me
in the hospital and wouldn't even let me get out of bed to go to the
bathroom.  They didn't want you to move around at all for the first 4
days or so until the IV heparin started kicking in at the levels they
wanted, then they would slowly titrate you from IV heparin to oral
coumadin.

Both times I had to be on coumadin for 6-9 months and was told if I ever
got another one, I would be on it for the rest of my life!  Icccck!

Hope you do ok and that things turn around quickly for you!!!

Oh Chief,

Take care and be careful. That is serious stuff you are dealing with there.

Your foot was swollen, was your leg too where the clots are. I am not sure I
am understanding how this worked for you.

Was it your feet that were swollen. If so why was the other one, do you have
clots in both legs.

The left calf and ankle were swollen. The calf was "fat" like
a football.  Mary felt a "knot" on the back of the leg.

Only the left leg/ankle were affected.  I needed a cane for
13 or 14 days to keep weight off the left leg.

I had the clot in the right leg on the outer side just below the knee
in 2004. According to the technician that does the doppler, it is a
rare location as the interior side seems to be where most people get
DVTs.

I think I took coumadin for more than a year, and for some reason was
required to take it longer than most people do. It is hard to remember
now. I think the standard course is 6 months.
With the blood tests they are checking your INR and once it is
stabilized around 2, you will not need blood tests as often.. I was
very easy to stabilize. Perhaps my doc had more experience adjusting
coumadin doses or maybe there were other factors involved.
I also used an injection for the first few days before the coumadin
took effect. It was a low molecular weight heparin (fraxiparine).
http://www.aafp.org/afp/990215ap/945.html

It is interesting. At one time the required treatment was total
bedrest. Now though, they allow you to continue normal activities with
some precautions. I think I stayed home for the first week while on
the fraxiparine and then went back to work.

I've been on coumadin since November, 2006.  I've had to have my ProTime
checked anywhere from 1 week to 4 weeks but the last two times it has been
very good on 3 mg. per night.  I am supposed to stay between 2 & 3, and the
last two times, it has been 2.7 so everybody was happy - including me.
Since my cardiologist has gone to the Cleveland Clinic, I've had to change.
There are two brothers, both Dr. Wool, - one in the office Dr. Chan was in
(Ken) and one further away from me but the one I chose to go to (Dr. Tom).
That meant changing where to go for ProTime and for ICD check (just had the
one year check) and of course where I go to see the doctor.  The funny thing
is that when I first came to Montgomery, I made an appointment to see Dr.
Tom.  However, when I had my first bad attack here after seeing Grayson have
convulsions, Dr. Tom was out of town so another doctor from the practice
came to see me in the hospital.  After Grayson's funeral I had a heart cath
with angioplasty and a stent.  I stayed with him for a good while and then
transferred to Dr. Chan after Dr. Ahmed disappointed me, and Billy was so
pleased with Dr. Chan.  Now I've gone full circle and have my next
appointment with Dr. Tom.  Have already been to his office for ICD and
ProTime check.  Knew one of the nurses from when the ICD was implanted in my
chest.  And Dr. Tom and Dr. Chan worked together to implant it.  I'll have
to stay on coumadin the rest of my life.  But much better that than being as
sick as I was before the ICD..

Not much I can offer in the way of information.  Just know prayers are
on the way for you.
