A catch up on Lung problem and doctors

Harvey R. Stone - 13 Mar 2008 22:29 GMT I had my RD appointment which had been moved up a month because I wanted to get started on treatment for RA lung. He said and rightly so that he did not have enough information from the lung specialist to prescribe the right amount of steroid. He also said that he would start me on 30mg of prednisone daily taken early. The next day was the lung specialist appointment and I informed him of what the RD had done and that I had instructions from my RD to raise or lower the amount as this doctor wants. He wanted 10mg more or 40mg of prednisone a day and that is what we will do. He also scheduled me for the full test of my lungs and blood oxygen level testing to be done on their schedule. I am to receive a call on the date and time. I have had this before 3 years ago and since I have lost so much of my lungs in those years. I do not expect good results but it is information we have to have to see how much good the prednisone is doing.
This high daily prednisone level is going to go on for many, many months. I worry about my eyes, ears,, whatever with long term steroid use much less eating a hole in my stomach. I think I can keep that from happening but you never know. Any thoughts,,,,,???

Donna G. - 14 Mar 2008 00:15 GMT Hey Harv,
As some one who has been down this road several times, I know just how frustrating and discouraging it all can be.
Are you on anything for your stomach at all? If not, this might be something you want to ask your doctors about.
I had to be on 60 mgs of prednisone for 6 months the first time, then 1 year the second time. It is not fun, but is what is needed to get the damage to your lungs slowed down and hopefully stopped before you lose any more function.
They may also talk to you about going on Imuran as that is another common med that is used for this problem/condition. A lot will depend on what your pulmonary function testing shows. VERY IMPORTANT to keep the RD and the Lung doc communicating with one another on all of this. Hopefully your lung doc sends the RD copies of all the pulmonary function tests (PFT's).
The side effects of the pred is definitely a worry, especially when you have to be on those kinds of doses for a long period of time, but then again, if you aren't breathing, the rest doesn't really matter. So, as hard as it might be, focus on getting the issues with your lungs dealt with first, and express those other concerns to your RD and Pulmonologist so that they can keep on top of things and hopefully head off any other problems.
Know, my friend, that prayers are being lifted for you and that there be no further damage or complications!!!
You've had so much to deal with as of late!!! Praying that the pred will at least give you some relief from the shingles issues, the joint issues, etc.
Hang in there!!! We're all here for you when you need us!
Hugs,
. . . .

Hang in there, Kiddo. This is not going to be easy, but none of us really have it easy. We love you and you will be in our prayers.

Squirrely - 14 Mar 2008 06:14 GMT Prayers still coming your way Harv,
Just watch the pred usuage though because of the adrenals. I would take 20 mg in morning and 10 in afternoon, but that is just me because I do have adrenal issues. I found too doing it that way it is easier to come off of it at 2.5 every two weeks then if I was taking it all at one time.
I sure hope something soon works to help with the lungs, I don't have RA lung but boy do I know the lung issues too well.
I just found out too that my dad had COPD and so does my brother, so I am wondering if this is like a genetic kind of COPD that the three of us have or what. It was weird to see that in three of us.
I always eat when taking my pred. I take like a hot pocket, eat part of it then take my pred, and it doesn't seem to bother my tummy like it used to when I didn't eat something with it. I don't know if that would help stop putting a hole in it though. I hope so. I don't take meds with it, so I could end up with one.
Signature Love and Hugs to all Jo the squirrely one I am nuts about you.

nanny - 15 Mar 2008 00:01 GMT I'm so sorry, Harv, that you are going through this. That's a lot of Pred, but in your case it's probably going to be your redemption. Just want you to know that I care. Nanny

Just > want you to know that I care. Nanny It is a tool to use for what I have and if I do not show improvement they will raise it up and add other things to the mix. I lost too much too fast. I may even have to have a biopsy to check for cancer. The lung specialist has brought that up twice. We shall see. Harv
Lyn - 15 Mar 2008 21:21 GMT Bummer Harvey, however, at least treatment is available.
I had a cataract in my left eye caused by pred. I know you are aware of the bad stuff, maybe have your eyes checked on a very regular basis. Other than that, you know I wish you the very best. At least you are smart enough to take care of all of this.
God bless.

It is really up to the specialists to make the moves even if I am kicking them in the butttt to get it done. If I were smart, I would not of lost over a third of my lung capacity that will not be coming back. We can only hope that others learn from what takes place and take care of themselves. Harv
Donna G. - 16 Mar 2008 06:09 GMT OK, Harv, now cut that out!!!
The loss of lung use that you have experienced has nothing to do with you not being smart. Even the most intelligent of people suffer health issues that are beyond their control or that kind of sneak up on them unexpectedly. And yet, we all may have symptoms at some point that are very easy to ignore or write off to something else, doesn't mean you aren't smart!!!
Give yourself a break here. You have been dealing with an awfully full plate for a very long time now!!!

Thumper - 16 Mar 2008 17:50 GMT >> OK, Harv, now cut that out!!! >> [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] >prednisone will make that easy. :-) >Harv I wish I lost 44 lbs but not the way you did it. Tomorrow I start really paying attention to diet and exercise and have a goal of 70-80 lbs. I'm on a low dose of prednisone so I'm not so hungry all the time. The problem is exercise. My back and hips are killing me but I suppose they will get better when I lose wait. I'm just starting on the treadmill very slowly. I have to see my cardiologist next week and my echo cardiogram shows a low EF rate of 40%. Hopefully I can bring that up.
It's kind of funny. There are tons of people running around with an EF rate as low or lower and don't know it because they haven't yet gotten involved with cardiologists. Thumper

You are doing great and my kind of hero. It probably took quite awhile to put all that weight on you,,,,, so don't be in a rush to get it all off. With hips and lower back with pain,,,, people just do not know how hard this is for you. It is you that you are saving. God's speed. Harv

So far, they have all been willing to do this, and I don't have to play messenger (and, possibly, get something wrong).

ANN M - 19 Mar 2008 01:56 GMT Harv, I didn't reply sooner, but it wasn't because I didn't add you to my prayer list as soon as I read about your appointment and the not so fantastic news about your lungs. I will continue to keep you in prayer and hopefully the medicine will work and you will be able to stop the process of deterioration in your lungs. Ann

I do feel kind of strung out on 40mg of pred a day but others take more to fight this. Harv
