My DH has been asking me what I want for my birthday in nine days. The thing
I have missed the most during the cancer surgery, chemotherapy, hernia
surgery, recovery, etc., is swimming. I absolutely love to swim. Sooooooo, I
am getting a "perpetual" membership in the YMCA. That's a one time joiner's
fee and then a set amount each month that continues until you manually stop
it. That means that whenever the pools (yes they have 2) are open, I can
swim. Since we only have one car, I will get up early (which I do anyway)
and go up to Newark (about a 1/2 hour drive), swim, shower, and still be
back here before the DH gets up for the day. (Remember, he doesn't get to go
to bed until 2 AM.) I am so excited about this. He says we'll drive up
there Monday and get it all set up. I will be swimming by Tuesday. Hooray!!
I will have to start out pretty slow, though, since I have not been swimming
for well over a year and my abdomen is still healing from the two surgeries.
Sigh.

DeeTee, do take it easy so you won't regret getting started. It will be
good for you as well as a real pleasure, and it's always nice to have
something to look forward to!

That's great, DeeTee! I'm a swimmer too and I know what it means when
you have to give it up even for a while. It's one of the reasons I liked
this apartment complex so much. We have an indoor pool in the clubhouse.
I also have a membership to the "Y" as they gave me a scholarship, so I
go there as their pool is much larger :) You will love getting back into
the water. I know I love the feeling :)) I can tell from your post how
excited you are! Enjoy every minute :)))

Soooooo? Did you go swimming yet? If so, how was it? Is the water
heated and nice and warm?

We're going Monday to sign me up. The water is what I call semi-heated. It's
not icy cold, but certainly not really warm. I find it just right. It takes
Bob forever to get into a pool. I go down to the deep end, hold my breath
and jump in. Once I'm wet, the temperature is usually just right.
Come on Tuesday......LOL

The "Y" tends to keep their pools on the cool side as they are meant for
lap swimmers. And once you start swimming, you sweat even though you
don't really feel it since you are in the water. That's why swimmers
always have lots of water handy as they know they are losing liquids
when swimming.
The pool where I live is much warmer, but they set it that way because
there are a number of seniors here who use it for arthritis exercises.
When I lived in NYC, there was a local pool that had specific classes
for arthritis sufferers and they always kept that pool warmer.
If the Y has arthritis classes (mine does), they hold them in the
smaller pool which is kept at a higher temperature :)

Yes they do and that is the only pool I use...at least for now...because I
don't yet have the strength or stamina for the lap swims. One end of "my"
pool is for toddlers and beginner swimmers. The other end (and middle) is
for people who want to swim but not lap. I love it there.
