Does he realize that 1/3 to 1/2 of the purchase price
is lost the moment he drives off the dealer's lot?
At his age, a used truck would be his best buy.
Avis, Budget and other rental firms sell 1-year-old
vehicles (including trucks) for approximately half
price, with 30,000 miles on the engine. They are
dying to get them off their inventory. They have
all the service (and accident if any) records.
I bought my last car from Avis in 1988 and drove it
8 years until my license expired in 1996, then sold
it 2 years later when I left the back country.

Yes Leslie my son is aware of insurance (he has visited with two
different insurance agents for quotes) and he is familiar with repairs
(he has been driving an old pick up and was/is responsible for
maintenance for the last year) He has no living expenses per se since
he is living at home.
The first time buyers program at the dealers is only for college
graduates which he will not qualify because he went into trade.
Thanks!

But if he finances for 6-7 years who knows where he will be living/working
then? He may want to get married, change jobs, get his own place or even
buy a house, etc. It's just that it's a big decision and I've seen sooooo
many young people have a major struggle with finances because the new
vehicle was so tempting at the time--- and then they are buried in it for at
least 4 years until the loan is paid down enough to bail out of the payments
by selling the vehicle or trading it in on something less expensive.
There's a reason he's having so much trouble getting financed- the repo rate
is so high with young folks. I still wish him luck- it's exciting to get
your first brand new truck! I drive a full-sized Chevy 4X4 pick-up and love
it! But I bought a gently used 06 model last Sept. for $17+K less than a
brand new truck would have cost for the same thing!
