I promised a follow up when I started Orencia in December so here it
is.
My RA is almost non-existant.  I am however still taking 5 mg of
prednisone twice a day and 2 tabs of Tramadol.  I would stop talking
The Tramadol except that I have a lot of back pain.  I need to lose
about 50 lbs which should help the back a lot.  My RD says it's not
the RA that affects my back.  The Orencia started taking effect at
around the third to fourth infusion.  I get no side effects except for
a general itchiness that I get with all the biologicals.  So far it
isn't too bad and I can mostly control it with Allegra but if it gets
as bad as it was I would request to go back on Prednisone only.  I've
got my fingers crossed (with no pain.)  I only had one flair since
being on Orencia.  I stumbled and fell on ice catching myself with
both hands in front of me and my left hand swelled up and hurt like
hell.  It wasn't an injury because of the fall, it was the RA.  I can
tell the difference.  It cleared up completely in 2 days.

Hi Thumper,

I can tell you that if you lose the weight, the back pain will probably
go away. I used to have terrible back pain, but since I've lost 100 lbs,
I don't have it anymore. I'd have to say that it stopped after I'd lost
about 50. You will feel a whole lot better :)

Okay carole,

I must have missed this as i was rarely posting or reading last year.
How did you lose 100 pounds?  After my winter of prednisone and
gaining another 20 pounds (i started this whole arthritis thing as a
5'10" woman who weighted 140 and wore a size four) I am wondering how
one does lose all of that weight. I've gained 100 pounds since this
began.  So how did you lose all that weight and couldn't youhave
weighted <g> and done it on the biggest loser so we could have our ASA
retirement home?

Yea, my friend said that too. I could never do that show. In fact, it
annoys me.

So how did I do it?  I gave up all the white stuff: flour, sugar,
potatoes, rice, regular pasta.  I now eat only proteins, fruits, and
vegetables. I taught myself to like things I never thought I'd like. I
also started working out - slowly at first since I weighed over 300 lbs.
I started by doing some laps in our apartment complex pool, and I got a
book from the library on water exercises and did those. I also bought a
kickboard so I could do laps using just my legs.

After I started losing, and starting feeling better, I started using the
treadmill we have here, along with the weight machine. And I got outside
and went for nice walks.

In January I found out about a program at our local university for
adults with type 2 diabetes (which I had been diagnosed with last
August). I qualified and got accepted. I started that program in mid
January and I get to workout three times a week with a personal trainer.
He is a student who is majoring in this field and this is his field
experience for his senior year. His project is to design a workout
program just for me :))  And he's doing a SUPER job!!  I also applied
for a scholarship to the "Y" as I am on SSDI (I have congesetive heart
failure) and got that, so I supplement what I do at the university with
what I do there.

You can see my photos and read my blog on my website at
http://carolemay.com  BTW, I also got my A1C down to 6.2 from 11.4, so
my diabetes is in remission :))))

I also changed my whole attitude toward eating. I used to think about
what I was going to eat next all the time. Now I have to remember to eat
as it's not the upper most thing on my mind. I feel a whole lot better
and my knees don't hurt like they used to (I have OA in my knees and
hands). I can go up steps much easier now. In fact on Sunday I'm moving
to a third floor apartment :))

You can do it, Thumper. And if you need a weight loss friend, I'm here :))
