Knee Update

I've posted about my knee problems.
Short synopsis: Many years of problems that have gotten worse.

MRI shows probable lateral and medial meniscus tears. But x-rays show
arthritis (calcium in cartilege).

First orthopedic guy said we can do a scope/clean-out but due to arthritis
the results might not be "what I'd be hoping for" (which is to walk a long
distance at a brisk pace without pain). Eventually I would need a TKR,
perhaps in 2-5 years.

Rheumy concurred, but he figures 10 years before a TKR.

I went to second orthopedic guy today. He feels most of my symptoms are due
to cartilege problems. He can fix that with the scope. There is calcium and
he will have a better idea once he gets in but he sounded very confident. He
does NOT see a TKR at all as he says there is plenty of gap between the
bones. When one needs a TKR the gap would be very narrow.

Both orthopedic guys are highly recommended and conservative. In fact, I saw
this last one years ago for a rotator cuff problem and his approach was very
conservative (P/T, resulting in a total recovery).

So, I guess I will opt for the surgery. I teach at a University so I hope to
hold out until late June/early July.

Hi Mel,,,,   I think you are doing the right thing.   Take it easy on that
knee and maybe it will last until summer.

I have similar problems and I had the scope done years ago.  The ortho
appologized to me after the surgery, saying he had just made everything
worse.  The meniscal damage was too old to repair and there was nothing he
could do about the arthritis.

He did send me to PT, which helped a lot.  I would try PT first, if you
haven't already.

Walt:

My ISP is getting funky, and my messages are not appearing, but I see
they are there (I'm on Google groups now).

He did not seem to think the arthritis was all that bad.

I have to take a shot at this point.

P/T can strengthen the muscles, etc. and I'm sure it would help.

I'm just hoping he can help with the surgery.

Anyway, what was the upshot with your situation?

Was it no better? Worse?

Did you end up with a TKR?

Actually, that was all before the RA hit.  I still have trouble with my
knees on occassion, but they aren't too bad.  They are certainly better than
other joints - like my hips.  I keep my quads strong and that allows me to
do most of what I want to do.  I'm not likely to do any skiing any time
soon, but my hips, ankles, and feet wouldn't allow that anyway.

Do what feels right, but be realistic.  Good luck!
