for the past week, i've had a killer sore throat. one of those sore
throats that hurts deep down when you swallow and sometimes up towards
your ears. you know the kind. swallowing is a killer! the sides of my
neck are somewhat tender to the touch, but my glands aren't swollen. i
haven't had one like this in years and years, and it's not going away.
only other symptoms are a mild headache, some post nasal drip and at
first, a runny nose. no fever. i saw the doc on friday and she said
it's almost certainly viral, (it's not strep). she gave me nasonex (i
was taking claritin D, but that set off some heart PVCs I don't want)
and some stupid "magic mouthwash" that does nothing. the only thing
that puts a dent in the sore throat is tylenol and cepecol lozenges. i
worry about my suppressed immune system, but the doc said i could
fight this off. so far, it's winning.
anyhow, all i want is some reassurance that someone else has had this
and it eventually goes away! the good thing is it makes me forget the
RA achiness.

Everyone in my house has had it. It lasts for 2-3 weeks. See your doctor
to make sure that it isn't something else, but what we had was a virus - so
no treatment.
Sorry!

I hate to say this, but when I was a young 'un my Mom said that nothing
beat gargling with salt water. And as much as I hated it, it's the only
thing that works for me when I have a super sore throat.

Make that very warm salt water.
Or sip hot tea with honey and a bit of lemon juice.
If you want to numb it for a while, chloraseptic will do the trick. It
won't help the sore throat but will numb it for a while. Kind of unnerving
since it will numb your whole mouth. Usually I'll use it at bedtime to make
the throat not hurt long enough to get me to sleep.

Add a little vinegar to that warm salt water, or sip some dill pickle juice.

In addition to the gargling with salt water and tea with honey and lemon
try:
Warm/hot lemonade or tea with lemonade mix.
A slippery elm tea like Traditional Medicinals brand's Throat Coat.
Also, there used to be a cough drop called N'ice. It was mentholated and
also provided a slipperiness that coated the throat and made swallowing more
comfortable. Recently, I've only seen a Walgreen's brand version of it.
Instead of a bag, it comes in a flat-ish box with the lozenges in a blister
pack. Only thing that allows me to sleep when my throat is at its most sore.

ohhhhh yessss. me too, currently. keeping the post nasal drip down (i use
the original afrin formula nasal spray pump) helps my throat a lot. mine
has been hanging on, too.

((((((((((((((((((((diane))))))))))))))))))))))) no, I don't have it and I
don't want it! I have enough issues with this roller-coaster weather
freaking out my sinuses. Keep popping the tylenol if it helps - buy the
liquid if it's easier to swallow. My singer stepdaughter recommends licorice
tea for sore throats, lemon if you're like me and don't care for licorice.

I had it for three long weeks. My doctor had me gargling with Citrus
Listerine. I also used the Chloraseptic spray as well as the lozenges.
Just take it very easy. Let yourself get as well as possible because you try
to do too much too soon you'll just end up back in your sickbed.

Yeah I have had that too and it doesn't want to go away with me, but I think
it is the fact that Jim and I keep sharing it.
With the PVC's could it be that you could be dehydrated at that point. Just
wondering I throw pvc's and pac's when I get dehydrated which of course is
an issues with me for life.
I sure hope you get rid of it in the two weeks like others do.

Horehound candy is supposed to help, too.
And there's always my grannie's favorite remedy. Two teaspoons full
of whiskey (Jack Daniels is what she used) that has been mixed with
honey. She kept a small bottle pre-mixed & just nuked it in the
microwave to warm it up a little (be sure to take the lid off!).

:-) That is very close to the formula that my father in law used everyday
and he lived to 89 before lung cancer got him. LOl, he used Old Crow which
should only be used for a rub on skin conditioners. You have brought back
some good old memories.
